Vintage Fans & More

15 жыл бұрын

This video is going public again (with a revamp) in honor of the 5th Anniversary of Vintage Fans & More on December 15, 2013. The amount of views still baffles me, actually it's quite embarrassing since it's possibly the worst video I ever made of a fan, but regardless it's a pretty iconic video for the channel and a tribute to how far I've come here on KZfaq.
NuTone 'Hug-The-Ceiling' 52" ceiling fan in white. This was the fan originally installed in my family room when we moved in. Blade arms were a bit messed up so it wobbles and buzzes, eventually ending in its replacement. Apologies for the blurry quality of this video.

I noticed the switch housing cap looks more rounded and chunky than most of newer hugger.

Oh, too bad. Just remember, not EVERY ceiling fan needs to have a light kit. In fact, I prefer to avoid putting a light on fans in most cases. I only use it when it's absolutely needed. ;-)

Yeah, it's similar fr me. I'm close to scoring an SMC U42 for my bedroom, but since I have 7 foot ceilings a light is OUT of the question. I might soon have to invest in a nice floor lamp. ;D

I have so many childhood fans, but two that are closest to my heart are the Nutone Decorator (from my old house, I NEED one complete in AB) and Airmaster industrials (installed at my church, I got a few from there when they were removed). I used to stare at those Airmasters all through the church service, I have fond memories of tuning out the sermon and imagining those fans on high speed. XD

I have tip for you! If you want to depict that a fan wobbles, put your camera on a tripod, because I only see a slight wobble in the close up shots.
@vfandm

That's what I try to do in the way of lights as well. If they're needed, I put the lowest wattage possible in them so you can still really look at the fan and not burn your eye out. In my new Casablanca Fan Lair downstairs every light kit has a 15 watt bulb in it, no more. I'm really a fan of indirect mood lighting, lamps and stuff that light the room, not the ceiling.

Cool, they're good fans but the one I had had horrible bearings, so I traded it out for an Evergo industrial. Lol, if I put a light on my Lady Delta in the main room of the basement it would practically be on the floor. XD The switch housing is about 6 inches or so above my head.

Yeah, the one I want has decent bearings. I've also scored a Sears (Emerson) from the late 70s with a K-55. I'll be getting THAT one as soon as my relatives decide to renovate their house.

Oh, I see. I've always found it rather funny to watch a small flush-mount ceiling fan wobble. The motor housing stays put, and the wire housing does a funky dance! =D

I agree, but I can't put anything on a downrod up. Even flushmount/LCA is pushing the height limit. I want to put up a polished brass Casablanca in here, with an LCA. Maybe even my new Intelitouch Zephyr... Won't happen though, parents won't let me.

Sweet. I was supposed to get one from Jeremy way back when he only had one. He said if he found another two I'd get one of them, turns out he likes them too much. :-) I don't mind, they're his childhood fan, so he can keep any he finds.

Yep, it's called just that. :-p It would be really loud in the basement vibrating on the joist, not to mention I really messed up a blade arm when I took it down.

Well, if you want to know what it looks like, Jeremy Melugin has a photo of a fan of a fan on flickr that's the same model. The only difference is the blade brackets; they're a different color (and they actually match the fan. LOL)
@vfandm
@vfandm 15 жыл бұрын
You know, now that you mention it, I think that's what makes it look more vintage, that's the only thing. I reverse fans on high for vids only, and the fan makes that noise because of the wobbling, the slightest movement and that noise shows up. Not to mention it's really a builder fan. Instead of Craftmade, we have Nutones as builder fans here.
@BlueStreak440

Yeah, you're right, this fan is WAY too basic for the room it's in. I personally have always considered Hunter Originals to be good family room ceiling fans, but in your case, I'd go with something more decorative and elegant (and possibly, "sexy").

Ah, so it's a Friction Drive. In that case it does not have a K-55 motor. These fans are very odd and cool. There's a vertically mounted motor in the housing that has a little rubber piece at the end of the shaft. The rubber piece turns the piece that the blades are mounted to, thus the name Friction Drive, because the fan is driven by friction. Jeremy LOVES those fans, he's got a bunch as you can see on Flickr. I see you've seen Emerson Collie's video on how it works...

@vfandm
@vfandm 8 жыл бұрын
Those blade arms were scrapped half a decade ago. One broke shortly after I took it down from this room, I tossed the whole set and haven't ever found/gotten new ones. I think I just need a generic set from a hardware store, but given this fan is nothing particularly special, it wasn't worth the effort until people started wanting a remake.

@CeiIingFanLover Yeah, uhh...unless they have no reverse function, any fan can be reversed while in motion.
@vfandm
@vfandm 15 жыл бұрын
Yeah, they say that, but it's doesn't do the the fan that much harm, unless it has a screw on downrod and the set screw is loose, it could screw of with the sudden torque. Ex. most Hunter fans.

Where is the fan now?First,you changed it into a Casablanca Panama,then Hunter Eastern Shore,then Delta II IT airlines.(oops)
@vfandm

Contrary to popular belief, reversing the fan while it is on has little to no effect on the performance of the fan. If it did, Casablanca wouldn't recommend reversing their fans while they are on. That's right, Casablanca says NOT to reverse an Intelitouch fan while it is off...
@vfandm
@vfandm 14 жыл бұрын
Ha! That's a good one. Stack motor Casas all use the same motor smart one, so it wouldn't make a difference if it's IT or not. ANY fan can be reversed when in motion, there's no law against it.
