He’s not writing a how-to manual. He’s experimenting and trying to challenge himself and make the hike more interesting for himself. He’s hoping to learn as he goes and share what’s working, what’s not. You make it sound like he’s trying to sell you a used car and you’re criticizing the flaws in the car he’s trying to sell you. But he’s not trying to sell you anything. He’s just taking viewers along for the ride and learning what he can. You have a lot of gripes about thru hiking that have nothing to do with quadzilla, his video or his hike.

One of my secret super foods is the small tubes of sunflower seed kernels you can find at most gas stations and convenience stores. They’ve got 340-370 calories per tube, 12+ grams protein and a lot of good salts, also with smaller amounts of iron and magnesium. They used to be 2 for $1, but that’s gone up a bit. Great by themselves and fantastic dumped into any cooked trail concoction. 🍻

I absolutely love this. You are feeding yourself better than most of the other thru hikers I follow 👍 A word on protein: We need all the essential amino acids. Most protein bars use a low quality or plant based protein that is degraded and/or incomplete. We can't store protein so whatever we can't use it gets turned into sugar and at a very poor calorie transfer rate 40-70% (e.g. 100 listed calories is actually 40-70 calories). Animal proteins have all essential Amino acid. Eggs have the highest balanced ratio. Tip: despite the slightly higher cost duck eggs (if available) have the same nutrition as 3 Chicken eggs. They have larger yolks and are significantly denser. A good rule of thumb is Fat and carbs are fuel. Protein is for building. Happy hiking 🥾 P.s. All the hormones that make you happy are made from Cholesterol so if you lose too much weight and don't eat enough animal fats, you literally can't produce happiness.

If you pair appropriate vegetables, they can act together as complete proteins. Don't sleep on vegetables-they can get you through it.

I like adding pumpkin seeds to my trail mix as they are pretty cheap and easier to eat than little sunflower seeds. Good point about convenience, like buying instant oatmeal packets is more expensive than mixing up a canister of oats, powdered milk, sugar, etc.

My hike doesn't entail restaurants so I really love utilizing hostels and cooking inexpensive, large quantities of food to gorge on when you can. Eating as properly as I can on trail is extremely hard for me Even though I've been hiking for many many years. I tend to resupply every week to week and a half and then I burn out within the month. The practice of discipline in moderation is one of the main key takeaways from hiking that keeps me doing it. There are much more to his videos than what comes out of his mouth to take away.

Something I really like are the OvaEasy Egg Crystals. 2 parts of the crystals to 3 parts of water equal one egg and you can not tell them from a egg you crack and cook since they are nothing but 100% Eggs. A snack size zip lock bag works really well if you put 2 or 3 of the egg crystals combination in them and some cooked ham with a little onion flakes. In camp add the water and mix , then clip off a corner of the bag and squeeze the mix into a small skillet to make breakfast of any meal. I use a small Evernew Titanium non stick pan.

Good video. It often seems that good foods are less expensive that the convenient foods. 60 years ago, our trail mix was "gorp". It was a mix of peanuts, M&Ms, and raisins. I also liked banana chips and dried apricots. Happy Trails. Good Luck, Rick

Still going watch as I really like this series for the challenge and also the discussions about mental state on the way. It would be interesting at the end to do the math for the amount of sponsorship bars that were eaten to know how much of the 1000 would have been eaten up by the bars assuming Rise is providing the bars for free. Stay safe. You're awesome.

How long is it okay to carry out some cooked meat or eggs in eastern summer trail weather? 12 or 24 hrs?
@planesandbikes7353
@planesandbikes7353 4 күн бұрын
most meat is not good for more than half a day. cured meats like pepperoni can last a few days and jerky for months. Unwashed uncooked eggs can lasts months without refrigeration and most of the world does not refrigerate uncooked eggs at all. Once hard boiled you need to eat them within a couple hours, and they are heavy so not suited to hiking. I think a lot of that stuff he is eating as soon as he buys it or in hostels and magic kitchens, or the next camp, not carrying far on the trail. Peanut butter though - calorie dense and worth carrying

Tahini jars generally say that it should be refrigerated. I’d just take whole sesame seeds if you’re looking for the nutritional content. If you can find rocks, easy to grind sesame seeds to make tahini on the spot. Would be messy but works. But teeth also turn sesame seed into tahini.
