If you’ve ever wondered how to open a coconut, you’re not alone.
My first time opening a coconut was very frustrating. I thought I needed a drill to drain the coconut water and a hammer to crack it open. It was loud, scary, and dangerous!
If you think you need a power drill, saw, hammer, chisel, or screwdriver to open a coconut, you may shy away from purchasing a whole coconut. Fresh mature coconuts do look a bit intimidating, but they are actually easy to open. All you need is a kitchen knife!
Learn the easiest way to open a coconut at home.

In my island, we have a Legend about the coconut. So in the legend, a coconut is the head of an eel that fell in love with a princess. Before it died, it told the princes to cut off its head and bury it near her Palace.. if she does it , a tree will grow and it will be used as means for survival. Anyway, the fruit o f the tree will be for food and drink. So the coconut is liken to the eel's head that was cut out and buried. The three dots are the two eyes and the mouth. It is the mouth that we can open and drink the juice.

To speed up the draining of the water by 5x, I stick a stwaw through the hole (all the wat to the back wall) and all the liquid drains in one 5th of the time. This is useful if your main objective is to collect coconut water to co sume cold or as a mixer for alcoholic drinks.

Hi Petra, so happy to see you back on this platform again. I have really missed your videos. So I am from Southern India and coconuts play an extremely important role in our diet and spiritual life as well. Back home, we would just bash the coconut on a stone or even the edges of a step in the back yard to get it open. Now here in the US, it had become really tough to find a way to open them especially around festival days when we have to use fresh coconut. The method you showed is exactly how skilled coconut sellers and farmers used to open them. Will have it to give this method a try with the soaking step. Now if you have some tips to open up the whole coconut with the green husk and all that would be something 😉

Thank you so much! I do remember you from the comments!! I have gotten quite a few requests to show how to open a young coconut, which I am going to do. However, I have never seen a coconut with the green husk still on in the stores (at least here in Canada). It's typically already removed, so it's just the white husk.

@@NutritionRefined aah that’s so sweet. I honestly have not seen the coconuts with the full husk on here in any store as well except in Hawaii. If I ever do get my hands on it, I wanted to learn to open one to get to the tender coconut meat inside. I miss eating that.

If coconut is very matured and dry well with this method you can peel the shell without breaking the coconut white but if the coconut is not very matured it’s difficult to peel that way. I am telling you this because I did coconut business for years.

Mature (old) coconuts are (best for cream/milk/yogurt ect..) very high in fat. Young ones will have (soft jelly meat) younger they are they lower fat/softer jelly and more water. However they all vary, most we get here in Australia are 300 - 500ml, but in Indonesia, Thailand, Bali some are 1000 - 1500ml of water per young coconut. Nice video

She probably does drain it since both coconut meat steps come after the drainage step and she doesnt mention anything differently. Also if you have frozen coconut water inside the coconut meat it could complicate using the meat afterwards since you wouldnt know where the water is frozen or how much of it there is. It would also make the entire coconut heavier to handle since it would be the weight of the frozen meat plus frozen coconut water. Im not Petra but I do believe that she probably drained the frozen example as well! Cheers.

awesome. recently i saw a different video where someone told to heat the already split coconut halfs for 15 minutes in an oven, in order to separate the shell from the meat. but i'd prefer to use the freezing method, because i think it might keep the meat more native than heating it up. But one question: After freezing, can i immediately start to crack it with the knife, or should the coconut be defrosted before?
