Today we have the amazing opportunity of showing off what I believe is an industry leader in premium leather bags. The Jones 13 takes the iconic Mark VII bag of Indiana Jones and WWII fame and kicks it up to high gear. Premium madone leather, beautifully done canvas interior, antique brass hardware. These are just a few of my favorite things! The fact they were able to make it here in the United States is a great bonus.

i just wanted to add my $0.02 as i have worked with leather for years. the leather sheath you showed is a different type of leather called veg tan. most veg tan has that squeak you are talking about, and tends to be more expensive as the tanning process takes months rather than hours for chrome tan (what most budget leather goods are made from, everything from handbags to couches). the difference in quality or leather will come from a few things. 1) type of leather - each leather has properties which make it best suited to a task. a good example is on leather holsters, as only veg tan will let you mold it to the gun and keep this shape with enough rigidity to hold it in place. the main categories are veg tan, chrome tan and oil tan. 2) the cut of leather - leather can be split into multiple layers, or kept as a one sheet. this is where you have of full grain, top grain, corrected grain, genuine, all of these refer to different splits of leather. it also depends which area the leather is from. the shoulder is strong and doesn't stretch much whereas the belly stretches an awful lot. if the wrong leather cut is chosen you might end up with a belt which stretches out and becomes useless, or a bag strap which will tear if used under a heavy load. 3) the tannery - each has their own method and process, which differentiate between lines. some are drum dyed, some are embossed, some are tempered, just to name a few. the difference in quality in construction is more down to what type of stitch is used, what thread is used, how much reinforcement, how well thought out the design is, buckles and hardware, etc.

I do love their bags, I have their 13 inch but it is the ash grey and black leather when they has that color selection and it is my favorite color mix! Definitely love this company

I like that there are no magnets on the front flap as there are on the canvas versions.

Love this bag. I snagged it during the first wave of releases so the strap is all leather. It's patina'd so well since then. One flaw is that there is some bonding agent that zipper strap as well as flap peels badly after some time.

Great review. May have to look into these bags. I'm a bit rough with my office carry stuff and I like to carry folders with documents in addition to edc items, a Klein kanteen for coffee and a small first aid, small wash kit. What might you recommend from them?

$500 is a steal for this. Filson, Frank Clegg, and other high end manufacturers charge into the thousands for similar.

How does the Jones 13 compare to Saddleback's "Thirteener"? Or in general, Nutsac vs Saddleback?

The big difference is Saddlebacks are/were made in Mexico where labor standards and pay are notably lower than here in the US where NutSacs are produced. Saddlebacks designs are also simpler being stacked leather instead of "seamed" like you see here and at least with the Fourteener I've seen they're unlined while these are. Saddleback certainly don't look bad, and I can't knock em since I haven't owned one personally, but on paper they should cost 1/3rd to 1/2 as much as they do.
