Nvidia's RTX 4060 has excellent efficiency, can run Cyberpunk 2077 RT Overdrive very nicely and DLSS 3 has its uses - but that's matched against benchmark results that vary drastically against RX 7600, RTX 3060 and Arc A750 where it struggles to be competitive. Rich runs the gamut of the various benchmarks, then moves the RTX 4060 over to the mainstream gaming PC it was intended for. With a look at the future of gaming in mind, can the RTX 4060 keep up with Sony's PlayStation 5?

Tbh the funny thing is, if the GPU had VRAM/memory speeds like a 3060, 12GB memory, slightly faster cores/CUDA... it would be a decent 4060 card and maybe could blow AMD out of the water for 300 bucks. Probably because any other gen it would of been an RTX xx50 card at $150. Nvidia overestimated the demand for mining and built cards around mining and lower power consumption at the cost of gaming performance gen over gen because they thought they would be able to get miners to upgrade on the back of energy savings and heat etc. They assumed wrong. Which you know what they say about people that make assumptions.

The only AIB making a 16GB 770 right now is Acer, using a hybrid fan model that isn’t actually as good as the more traditional design of the Intel card. I hope it lasts-and honestly, I’m not sure how available it is; Acer is a relatively new AIB and I haven’t seen this care outside of Newegg and Microcenter, and have no idea what the situation is outside the US-but the LE being discontinued is not great.

And that's a huge problem for Ray tracing, which makes what they're doing absolutely ridiculous even per their own goals. The only reason the 20 series was any good at RT even as a beta feature was by Brute Force, plus some very special compute units that could speed RT calculations. If we were still gaming on tube displays or plasma displays that aren't nearly as picky about Native input resolution, I wouldn't even mind features like DLSS. They are relying on it though as an excuse to cut production costs when it doesn't even make sense technically.

Case in point, complete lack of 1440p results for a 350€ card in an age where APUs can run 1080p. Also no mention of the absolute nightmarish artifacting at 1080p with DLSS which has been shown by other outlets. It's just an Ad, the whole video is an advertisement for the 4060, not a review. 90% of their represented use cases are untenable and no one in their right mind would use them as such unless playing on a 7" screen... @@Thezuule1 Definitely no surprise. DX12 and Vulkan games thrive on lots of raw compute, and ARC delivers on this front. The biggest knocks on Intel are its inconsistent performance in older games, and a heavy performance hit if your system lacks resizable BAR (so much so that Intel itself said to look elsewhere if this is the case). At least for myself, given I still run Haswell (4th gen), Arc wasn’t even a consideration, as much as I’d have liked to have a third competitor.

Ada could've went down as one of the best architectures due to it's great efficiency. Had the 4060 been a 4050 and priced accordingly we'd be talking about a card that many times beats the 3060 all on a die about half the size (even with the onboard cache). ...Imagine if you will a parallel universe where Nvidia and AMD still cared about PC gaming. Better off going for last gen gpu's, which are still potent gpu's that can beat this gen of consoles and are a lot cheaper to buy then this gen of gpu's, if you keep an eye out, you can get a real steal on the last gen when the sales are on, and performance is overall better for the price compared to this gen offering, especially at the mid range level.
@ordohereticus3427
@ordohereticus3427 Жыл бұрын
@@paul1979uk2000 In certain regards, sure, but this VRAM situation is a great example. Back with the PS3/360 one could even get a prior generation 7900 GTX and be well ahead of the consoles in terms of absolute memory bandwidth and rasterisation power. Now it’s this messy situation where one could even buy an upper mid-tier card from the prior generation and one would be lucky if VRAM isn’t a bottle neck. The current consoles can do the ray tracing and handle the textures while someone can spend more on the PC side and even get an upper mid range card, only to find themselves somewhat beat in some random department by a much cheaper home console. So back then, one could get a midrange GPU from the previous cycle and still be well ahead of the consoles on all fronts. This even remained true with the PS4/Xbox One era where even budget gaming laptops had better grunt just for a slightly higher cost. That’s just no longer possible. Part of it is likely down to consoles themselves using a very efficient PC style architecture now, but the other parts are down to what people have been mentioning about PC hardware manufacturers.

Besides, dlss 3 is a good bonus if you're already hitting high framerates but it's awful for low internal framerates, especially for raytracing. RT still relies heavily on temporal reconstruction so if the internal framerate is 30fps the lighting will update very slowly with awful ghosting, no matter how many interpolated frames you have.

The fact is the 4060 has lower bandwidth with a smaller bus and you have to compare it with a 2070 to make it favorable. It's a 1080p card at Best in today's games. In one year this card is not going to be a good card for 1080p. Frame generation is hardly in any titles, negatively impacts your input lag, and it's only really good for lowering persistence. That's fine and all, but we need to stop framing this as if it's a value. It really isn't. It is neck-and-neck with the 3060 t.i. in raster, but that card had more RAM and a larger data bus. The card got beat by an arc A750 doing RT in control. Can't call it a value if it can't even keep up with a competitors first generation card in one of the titles that Nvidia developed wth their own proprietary RT technology. Control was the first "good" RT game and 4060 loses to an A750? Yikes. How does it do in the path traced Minecraft or Quaker RTX? Those two essential RT titles are memory Hogs, so I highly doubt 4060 runs them that well. If you're going to say that it's got value for RT but you only show it losing, and winning in one Nvidia cherry-picked title, it shows it's not a value product at all, especially if future games are what you're looking for.

My 3090Ti is power consumption under 300W and gives me good framerates and plus I play everything max settings with 1440p240hz meaning locked to 240fps thanks to G-SYNC ULTIMATE processing. Even if I get lower fps I get smooth frame rates because I have a G-SYNC monitor that gives me HDR and steady 240fps motion clarity even if I play games at 60 fps or 90 fps. I play most of the time Counter-Strike games and I can do livestreams easily, I can do graphic design, I can play anything I want to game. It gives me Ray Tracing with very good frame rates. I plan skipping 40x GPU series and even 50x GPU series. My 3090Ti is one of the best top of the line graphics card that I ever had in my gaming lifestyle so for me it is not a scam. Maybe for someone else is and I respectfully don't care what others opinion is if they think I got scammed or not. At the end of the day I choose what to invest in and in what to avoid. Same thing applies for PlayStation 5 consoles as starting in fall 2019 I bought a PlayStation 4 Pro console and I still have it, I did not invest in PlayStation 5 console just to play PlayStation 4 games on a PS5. Other people just got scammed with that PS5 launch of 2020 and 2023 just in October made me go buy a PlayStation 5 console for Marvel's Spider-Man 2. This gpu, and this generation in general is giving me RTX2000 vibes all around. There is little to no generational improvement in rasterization performance per dollar vs discount last gen cards, and the new features are more of a promise for the future rather than something that really improves my gaming experience today. There's no doubt that RT overdrive in cyberpunk is impressive, and the 4060 runs it decently, especially compared to AMD, but I've already played cyberpunk, and I'm not likely to put that many more hours into it other than a few for the DLC. Then I'm left wondering if this card will even be capable of running future path traced games with it's memory buffer already being right at the tipping point with modern releases, and the notable memory cost of both ray tracing, and frame generation. I just can't see ever choosing this over a much more powerful used card at the same price like a 3070, or a much cheaper card if you are just looking for something that can play modern games at playable frame rates at 1080p like a 6600.

@b130610 Жыл бұрын
@@mstewart248 Fair enough, but I'd argue that RT was basically vaporware at the launch of the 20 series, making the huge performance gains much less compelling. In comparison, the smaller but meaningful uplifts in the 40 series are actually useful for stuff like cyberpunk because you can get those scenarios with high detail bvh's and a bazillion rays running at playable framerates. That said, it all still feels like sort of a nothing burger because there are only a few games where ray tracing is actually a feature I'd turn on because it is still such a huge performance hit for the visual uplift, and the 30 series is still almost as good at ray tracing. DLSS3 is cool, but is also limited to just a couple dozen games, and seems pretty situational, though I'd be lying if I said I wasn't curious to try it in person. It's all just not very compelling in aggregate though when you consider the pitiful generational performance uplift, and the vram concerns across most of the lineup.

Thanks to DLSS,the GTX1080 which I still consider a great card for 1080p and not terrible for 1440p is CRUSHED by RTX2060 6GB in compatible titles. Depending on a game,the DLSS 2 can improve performance from some 40 or so % minimum to over 200% in most extreme cases making it usable even for 4K. Perhaps that will change going forward,but there are many games on the market that people might want to play that they missed and 2060 is still great for many of its owners. Not just getting beaten by the 7600 but also in many cases by the older 6600XT/6650XT which are available new for $70-$80 less. And apart from Cyberpunk which is more or less Nvidia's tech demo even that advantage may not be worthwhile going forwards, other titles with RT/Unreal 5 etc seem to be leaning towards lighting solutions that run well on AMD gpus. Which makes a ton of sense since consoles are the biggest market and both Playstation + Xbox are AMD hardware.

FG is so good but you have to try it, not talk about something that you dont know. It doesnt increase latency, it doesnt lower it from uping the fps traditional way. This is a huge missconception that amd fanboys cant wrap their head around. Your latency is the same how it was without fg but fps is higher. 2 main changes from Turing to Ada that are known to public smell like die hard candidates for very high variability of the improvement: 1. Turing to Ampere, adding a second FP32 unit to the same SIMD / SM block, sharing the instruction source operand gathering and issue port sub-blocks with the integer unit, all relying on some sort of dual issue - either same warp neighboring instruction dual issue, or cross-warp - same SIMD / SM dual issue (more likely the latter, as the former is notoriously ineffective, see RDNA 3's per CU per MHz results). The math throughput increase that that results in is widely circumstantial and naturally varies from shader to shader (and as a result, application to application) as it's dependent on the quality and distribution of instruction mixes of different types, latency hiding, and exact particularities of HW warp scheduling to yield results. 2. Ampere to Ada, dramatically reduced "DRAM bandwidth" / "math throughput" ratio across the board (in case of 4090 by increasing math throughput relative to 3090, but keeping the DRAM bandwidth the same, in case of lower mid-range cards by cutting down DRAM bandwidth, and doing both in-between) is attempted to be compensated by dramatically increasing L2 size. Caches _especially_ in GPUs are only as effective as spatially and temporally local the access pattern is (by address), that naturally drastically varies from application to application, and also tends to exhibit cliffy behavior as the same application / algorithm is scaled by some parameter (be that the frame buffer resolution, or texture resolution, or BVH size / LOD, or anything else): the moment the "hot" portion of the data structure parameterized and scaled stops physically fitting into the size of the cache it's efficacy at filtering (reducing) the traffic and thus memory bandwidth requirements can drop dramatically up to and including 0.

I will say it again. DLSS3 is garbage. It doesn't contribute to latency reduction that you usually get from real high framerates. And latency matters even in single player games. Just moving the camera with mouse feels less floaty and as a result more comfortable with lower latency. Just because single player games can be manageable with higher latency, doesn't mean it justifies garbage tier performance from a GPU that's priced that high. You can play single player games at 20 fps too if you really want.
@filippetrovic845

What you mean to say with 20fps? The reason there is fg is to not play neither 20fps nor sub 60. As long as output is above 80 fg works like magic. Latency is the same as your starting fps so its no worse, but you talk like it reduces latency. Keep your opinion to yourself and feel free to not buy newest nvidia gpu. I am glad it matters alot to me and if there is fg option i know im playing with fg. Or to even more extreme if there is a fg game im not playing it without nvidia 40 series or newer gpu.

@@filippetrovic845 "What you mean to say with 20fps?" ->What I meant by that is that you can play a game at 20 fps too. That doesn't mean the experience is good. It was meant to give perspective of standards. "The reason there is fg is to not play neither 20fps nor sub 60." ->Never said so. "As long as output is above 80 fg works like magic. Latency is the same as your starting fps so its no worse, " ->No it doesn't. You said it yourself, the latency is same as your starting fps. That means you aren't getting the benefit of latency reduction expected from increased framerate. So it's half baked experience, your motion looks smoother but your input latency still feels as bad as starting framerate. "but you talk like it reduces latency. " ->Never said that. The whole time I'm criticizing about the lack of latency reduction and you interpret my comment as the opposite? "Keep your opinion to yourself and feel free to not buy newest nvidia gpu." ->Just who the hell are you to tell me whether I should keep my opinion to myself or not. If you're offended by my comment, you're free to argue with me or you can ignore it. And you are right, I hadn't purchased 40 series gpu because the performance of these GPUs have been garbage. "I am glad it matters alot to me" ->That is completely fine. You can like whatever you want. I am in no position to stop you from that just like you are in no position to tell me to keep my opinions to myself. All in all, from my point of view, the 40 series have not met the performance expectations for the price. The fact that they are pushing fg as if it's a solution for higher framerate is also deceptive because fg doesn't give full benefit of increased framerate. Have a nice day.

"One cannot use DLSS 3 on RTX 30-series graphics cards as they do not include an Optical Flow Accelerator". In other words, the 4060 has something that puts the previous generation in a corner. Sure, everyone is on the frAMe generator hate train. " Fake frame", or " input lag", "not pure rasterization". Etc. Well my friends, few years from now, you will need a cooler the size of your bedroom, if you think rasterization performance should double in each generation. We are reaching the limit on what is viable. The 4060 consumes very low, performs better then the 3060, and doubles your frames with Deep learning AI. TO me sounds like pure jaw dropping technology. And the 4060 has it. For 299. If greater input lag is all everyone has to complain about, Nvidea reflex proves that its possible to solve this. AI will improve, and they will solve it, no doubt :) Got the 4060, loving it.. Less Vram, less cuda cores, less Memory interface. Sure. But also, better architecture, next gen processor and cuda cores, next gen everything basically, and performing better with "less". I would call that a win :)

Yeah I agree a lot with this I think people are hating it because we are in the very early stages of this technology which will likely be the future. It's clear with how fucking huge the 4090 is and it taking up 400w to build anything more powerful will carry to get larger and even more power hungry it's already barely sustainable. We need to go in a different direction eventually with AI or cloud or something. While I might not like 4060 as a product and think it is pretty flawed because it's a bit underperforming | think it's important that Nvidia are actually trying to innovate. I really appreciate the low power draw when I live in an area with really high energy prices too. I've also gone way more to mobile gaming with the steam deck so I don't mind lower graphics so huge power max graphics don't really appeal to me as much either so that helps.

The slippery thing is that it can be argued that nVidia is lowering their prices of some of their cheaper cards each generation, because the new cards of the same tier gets cheaper, but performance and spec wise they are moving which card falls in which tier. They make the 50 series of the previous gen the 60 series of the next, but then dangle a "Ti" version for a $100+ more. There were only Ti versions of 70 and 80 tier cards before, now all tiers have them to encourage upselling. On the high end, in the 20 series they doubled the price of the Titan cards from $1000 (GTX Titan) to $2000 (RTX Titan). In the 30 series they rebranded the Titan series to the 90 Ti, and added the 90 tier in between that and the 80/80 Ti in the 20 series. For the 40 series they completely bypassed making an actual 80 or 80 Ti and are slapping the 80 tier name on the 90 tier card, and the 90 tier name on to the 90 Ti card, but keeping the price of the higher tier card. I'm sure their thinking was that with such a huge performance gap between the 4080 and 4070, why would someone with a 2080 or 3080 go down a tier when we can get them to pay for more to stay in their current tier. I wouldn't be surprised by a $1800 4080 Ti and possibly a $2200-2400 4090 Ti in the next year.
