Note: We talked to 1usmus after the video and it seems like the Radeon Monster Profile didn't work as well with our Intel processor. The Radeon Monster Profile tweaks Re-Bar which can significantly improve performance, but at times this seems to conflict with the Intel microcode leading to worse performance. If you have an all AMD build it should be even better. -AC

AMD STILL has driver issues which is really sad. This can be seen in Snowrunner game where the AMD graphics drivers eventually start to create mud spikes out of the ground in long rows. This is a driver bug with AMD because this doesn't happen with Nvidia. Something in AMD graphics drivers messes the height map of the mud and tall spikes and deep holes form on the ground. Thankfully it is just a visual bug and it doesn't affect the collision mesh of the game world but it still is annoying because eventually when enough mud spikes and holes have piled up in the game world, the game out right just crashes. Drivers simply cannot handle anymore errors.

If you're not pushing your card in newest titles with 4K resolutions and all the crazy settings, you're not gonna choke your GPU enough really to feel the difference even when it is there, because how would you? One of the interesting things is that as a Linux user, the situation with drivers are almost flipped. Nvidia has really wonky proprietary drivers that replace a large part of the Linux graphics stack, but AMD (and Intel) have open source drivers that use Linux's Mesa graphics stack, so they work out of the box with no additional drivers needed and have very good compatibility and API support.
@cromfrein5834
@cromfrein5834 Жыл бұрын
Yep, nvidia drivers also cause a ton of REALLY weird issues at random times. Some games from random vendors just refuse to work in WINE or Proton, where they work perfectly normal from elsewhere. Obviously AMD doesn't have this problem afaik.
@eideticex
@eideticex Жыл бұрын
Recent changes to AMD drivers on Linux even rendered their proprietary driver obsolete compared tot he open source driver. For a long while that proprietary driver was the only way to get certain Vulkan features to work correctly and that kind of sucked since it locks you to a specific kernel version. Not sure when but within the last couple months that changed, now the open source driver does all of that and works with whatever random (modern) kernel you throw at it.
@styrelsefksu4463

yeah as a Linux user AMD is obviously the better choice but I'm wondering if there is any performance benefits between AMD's own proprietary drivers versus the free Mesa ones and if there is a way to make gaming on Linux as fast or faster then on windows simply by overclocking the video cards the same way they do in the video that should be the subject for the next LTT video

Even with Nvidia's proprietary drivers installed from official Nvidia repositories they managed to completely brick my desktop three times on two different machines after an OS upgrade. I've given up and stick to nouveau for now and my laptop has never worked better. Meanwhile the only issue I've had with the RDNA2-powered Steam Deck is missing controller and anti-cheat support. Let that sink in for a minute. The experience with the Steam Deck running Windows games on Linux is better and more reliable than an Nvidia card running just the desktop.

One thing you cannot underestimate is how AMD supports open technology. Ignoring the fact their Linux drivers are open-source, they were one of the biggest creators of DisplayPort in the VESA group. They also created Freesync (using the DisplayPort technology they pushed) and they also provided basis for Vulkan to Kronos Group from their own, proprietary API (that no one used).

And DisplayPort is entirely unreliable, just like their drivers. Time and time again I keep running into monitor issues that are immediately resolved by using a port that isn't DisplayPort. This happens in onboard graphics, Nvidia, or AMD. They can spout all the specs they want; DisplayPort can't be trusted. Right now, I have two seperate people that are having issues with monitors going black (while still being powered on) using DisplayPort outputs. One has a 3080 Ti, and the other has an RX590 for a more budget build. Two entirely different systems, different cables, different monitors, same output port. From now on, I will ONLY use HDMI. And yet, despite numerous reviewers saying "AMD is literally better AND cheaper for the normal user", Intel and Nvidia are so favored. Yes the extreme high chips WILL be better not a question, but price to performance AMD is better. First time I ever heard of someone going from RTX 3000 to AMD and having a positive opinion. I work at a pc shop with a 30 days back policy And 9.9999 of the times , they exchange their Nvidia cars for amd to save some bucks. The bring me back their AMD card , with arguments like fsr is just not comparable with DLSS 2 , not only the performance increase is lower , but the visual sacrifice is much higher when in movement there are a lot of artifacts. So they where not using it , and ended up feeling like they did lost a ton of performance. Or told me that they miss the Nvidia control panel , that it is so much better. Also GeForce experience. Some have told me that they expected a drop in RT performance, but not such a drop , their exact words where: I was willing to have worse RT performance in exchange for similar raster performance for less money. But RT is not worse , it’s prohibited. It’s just not possible to enable it , games become a slide show. And there where games like dying light , metro exodus or hitman , that I like to replay and have installed where honestly , not activating RT has a big impact on visual fidelity. It’s not a small change at all. And a lot people also told me that they where gaming and the game suddenly crashed and closed And that this happened quite usually , and it almost never happened in their previos Nvidia card. I had one guy , take back to the shop his 6800xt to get back his 3060ti Wich is considerably less performant than the 6800XT. As someone who has been working selling both brands for years , AMD fanboys are hilarious 😂 They’ll defend their product no matter what

Can't recall if you've covered it previously, but NVIDIA first made their own tool for this 4 years ago, though it's not quite as specific with voltage tweaks by default. Most AIB overclocking software has it, and GeForce Experience has it. Runs its own testing to determine an overclock, and then with most OC software you can just flatline the frequency after it hits a power target you're comfortable with. You can then manually tweak voltages further, as well as adjust the memory clock to squeeze out a little more performance. This lets you get the same performance out of 30 and 40 series cards as stock, but typically with 30-40% less power consumption.

I also have a 6900XT and therefore have firsthand experience with both, and honestly, the difference for someone like me is truly massive. I just have some kind of mental block to have a top end GPU, and not be able to run all the top end graphics settings in-game. Idk. Team green for now, though that is begrudgingly the case as I still want AMD to succeed, hence why I also own many of their GPUs too. @only right opinion You should just build it. Unless you were already thinking that. I'm frankly astonished how badly these SIs are ripping people off, even including one stick of RAM on Ryzen platforms yeesh. Walmart PCs are the worst, even with a discount I'd not buy that they have like ultrawide 1440p they don't advertise as being 75hz and it's still too steep to me. What I'd say is look for any system using a decent CPU cooler and that has the Coolermaster Halo MF120 fans, the ones with dual LED rings. Any SI that didn't cheap out on those knows what it's doing. Otherwise definitely build your own for sure. I'd still say to consider Intel though, idk Ryzen 7000 looks pretty good, but to me a huge part of building is on system lifespan and upgradeability and my main problem with Intel tbh isn't just the price, but really bad lifespan. So you put a 13600k you're done, that's it, 13900k or some dumb shit long in the future when you should be building a new system anyway and hoping the PSU won't fail with new equipment. Meanwhile AMD you can actually build now on AM5 and have a future, getting a DDR5 board and all that. I still think Intel is valid for gamers though, with Intel+Radeon making the most sense to me for gaming, and Ryzen+nVidia being the most sense for production.

Well went team red today and I'm impressed with the color. RX6700xt took the place of a RTX3050, and the colors are deep. F1 2022, that was impressive, I almost beat my laptime within three laps instead of 10-15. The visuals were sweet, crisp and very clear, colors were defined. For such a noob as I and even I could tell the difference between the 3050 and the 6700. The VR experience was well worth the effort for a card swap. Cosmos just dialed right in, and just worked, and way better than the team green I got. Actually feel I did a well deserved engine swap, and replaced some bushings. Feels like the car sticks better to the road in F1, could just be the colors. For some t'was bells, for me it's the colors (of course it is!). With a 3080ti way above budget, at least I can do e-sports with team red and still eat real food. When I start winning, I can go green. I started out with an NVidia 8600 GT in my prebuilt back in... 2008 or so. Did it's job for a good while, was happy with it. I switched to an AMD Radeon HD 5870 some years later. I had some initial problems, but that was faulty hardware and after two RMAs (first had the same problem, guess it was the same card again) I kept it running for a long time. In 2015 or 2016 I built a new pc and decided to go with an R9 280X at that time. It eventually had a fan problem - one of the fans would occasionally spin at 100% for no reason. Some years later, I believe it was early 2019 (maybe 2018), I bought a used 1060 6GB. I was a bit worried about buying used, but it worked fine. The system eventually ran into some trouble in VR (which I got March 2021), with lag spikes occuring frequently after spending about an hour in it. There were some audio issues as well. My two 500GB hard drives had migrated from the 8600 GT system right up to here with a 3TB one added later. Old Windows installs were kept on some drives, when I got a SATA SSD I cloned one drive to that instead of reinstalling, when I got an M.2 I cloned again. I think my Windows 10 on the second PC had its roots in an upgraded Windows 7 from the first PC. When I built my current PC in August 2021, an all AMD system with a 6600XT (bought a day or two after the release date), I decided to finally do a clean OS install instead of frankensteining the old install any further. Most problems I had before were gone (e.g. VR audio works fine now). I still have some old energy saving mode issues (the PC wakes up on its own, I wonder if the problem are some of my USB devices), but the big new problem was AMD driver corruptions that happened when the system activated power saving features (turning off the screen or going to sleep entirely). This started happening around new year and has since ended, but in the meantime I had to reinstall drivers about three times. I guess I've had slightly more problems with AMD than NVidia, but the only real GPU driver issues were for a few months this year and could be avoided by turning off all power saving settings running on a timer (which might have been a CPU issue more than GPU for all I know). In games the AMD drivers have worked just fine for me.

The more you try to push towards the limit of DVFS curve(dynamic voltage frequency scaling) the more chances for the silicon to age and get slower faster. While loss of performance is a factor at higher voltages, reliability impact at low power state gets far higher degradation increasing power consumption while still delivering lower performance. Two years ago, the very last GPUs that were still around at non-scalper prices in late November 2020 were the Radeon RX 5000 series. I was building my first system, and really wanted to get my hands on a 3060 TI when it came out, but was worried because Nvidia had been waiting so long to announce it, it would almost certainly sell out immediately, and also with the intense budget I was under, I'll admit even a $400 card was really stretching my wallet. Ideally I had wanted a 2060, but at that point the whole RTX 2000 series was already being scalped as well. On the other hand, Newegg was still literally having SALES on the RX 5600XT and 5700XT, but I'll admit I was still pretty darn nervous about getting an AMD card. As someone who was very new to the building community, all I had heard my whole life was "AMD bad". Still, eventually the lack of even news on the 3060 TI mixed with my anxiety over wore me down, and upon doing some research online that although the 5600XT had some major driver issues at launch, they were mostly ironed out, I jumped and bought a factory OC'd 3-fan 5600XT on sale for just $300. Two years later, and I've honestly had no reasons to complain. I absolutely believe the stories I've heard from other people about their issues with older Radeon cards, and even the RX 5000 series, but I seem to have hopped on at just the right time for most of those issues to be gone, and instead I just lucked out on getting a great card right before all graphics cards were completely gone from the market. I may have bought into Radeon somewhat out of desperation, but I've been pleased as a peach with my card in the two years since then.

I had a lot of issues with my 5700 XT when I first got it. I vowed to never purchase an AMD GPU again because of how salty I was from the experience but its been clear that over the last few years, AMD has really devoted a lot R&D to improving drivers and the Adrenaline software. Its been a bumpy road but I can now say its great and I'm excited to get my hands on an RX 7000 series GPU.

@@deadpool1966 At 1080p? Wut? Sounds like you have a CPU bottleneck or are trying to run at Ultra. 1080p is where RDNA does its best work - it falls away from Nvidia a bit at 4k as it starts racking up cache misses and there's not enough memory bandwidth available, but at 1080p a 6700XT performs like a 2080Ti - should be able to consistently max out a 144hz panel at High settings. Even a 3090Ti will struggle to hit 144 consistently at Ultra settings @ 1080p - high refresh rate gamers should step down to High. At Ultra settings most games are just over rendering effects that you can't see anyway - 50% performance hit for differences you can only see if you're doing side by side screenshot comparisons.

Great video guys! A great send off for RDNA 2 and primer for RDNA-3. I noticed allot of red/blue color scheming in both the graphs and elsewhere in the video. The mouse and the monitor stand seemed like stylized thematic choices. The stand especially really was a nice Radeon fit. I’m curious if the color styling was intentional not Green? At first I was kind of tripped up by the red bars in the graph thinking they were associated with AMD. I would suggest color coding by brand, and differentiating min/peak performance with tints and shades of the brands base color. I think this was my favorite episode with Alex in it yet, I loved his cheeky grin in the backpack scene. Overall I really enjoyed his fun playful vibe in this video. Is this what happens when linus goes on vacation? Ha ha, when the cats away the mice will play lol I’ve seen in psychological research that people often make more mistakes when being watched doing a task. But I don’t think that explains it, I think it’s love based. There’s fear of the authoritarian, and then there’s love for the idol. I would guess the whole crew really looks up to Linus and wants him to love them. I wonder how that may influence all the various cast members who are like “watch this trick dad” and then stumble in a moment of anxiety. I wonder if Linus just hanging with the boys would help alleviate dynamics of being star struck. Ultimately everyone wants linus to like them, in their hobbies and ideas to, which can induce some anxiety I would imagine. Maybe linus going on vacation gave the whole office a vacation from that emotional weight of managing their daily “hanging out with the hot chick” experience of working with a real life celebrity. The whole crew got to experience each other in a fresh newness where their energies were focused towards bonding with each other and found cheerful new energy. In all that sweet Nerdy Camaraderie. To put it simply, siblings behave differently when dad isn’t around. They find their own flow and that may be a powerful insight for LTT to leverage in some way as Linus slowly transforms into a Santa Claus like living god with many an elf in many a workshop.

Honestly, I've been on AMD graphics since 2014 with an r9 270x and then an rx 580. The last time I had a major driver issue was in maybe 2015 when I had the bug where your fan speed would get stuck at 20%. Other than that it's been perfectly acceptable. I think I might have had a driver crash running DaVinci Resolve earlier this year? The bugs on my laptop with Intel integrated graphics have been far worse. For months I regularly lost GPU acceleration entirely whilst using Firefox, prime video often won't play in 1080p, and watching prime video in chromium browsers often caused driver crashes if I had the audacity to interact with it in any way.

I got my 6800 XT in December 2020 and it has crushed everything I play! I had none of the Modern Warfare 2 crash issues that nvidia users were dealing with and my XFX Merc variation of the card overclocks like crazy while running cool and quiet. I’ve been AMD for multiple generations of GPU and the 6000 series was both the best cards they’ve ever made and the most competitive gen in years. Per HWUBs huge benchmark comparison video, the 6800 XT outperforms the 3080 on average across a huge sample of games in rasterization performance at 1080 and 1440p, the resolutions that the majority of players use. For the money, it can’t be beat, especially if you’re a competitive gamer that doesn’t care about Ray Tracing. And even if you do care about RT, it’s 60fps+ playable in a lot of titles, especially with FSR which has really leveled the playing field against DLSS in titles that support it.

@@TWFractured I have the exact same specs and it's great. I can play any game I want at very good settings and resolution. Also the mod that lets you use fsr 2.1 in dlss-only titles was a game changer. On a 4k tv with fsr 2.1 modded in I play cyberpunk with almost ultra settings and even a little bit of raytracing (local shadows like what the consoles have) at 4k res with fsr 2.1 performance mode. It looks crisp, 60 fps and it's beautiful. Similar story with Plague Tale Requiem. The only thing I'm missing is some more raytracing performance, but I'd never get enough with any similarly priced nvidia card anyway. And the 5600 keeps steady 60 fps in cyberpunk even with the "astonishing" crowd setting (present in the game files for a future update but unlocked with a mod). The streets are literally flooded with npcs but the game stays smooth and stable

So I was deciding between the 2080 and 6700 just recently and I went with the 6700. I always have been a nvidia fanboy but I really wanted to try something different. Plus it was with in my budget for my first beefy video card. Once I have this my custom rig will be complete, out side of storage. The issue with storage now is there are so many hard drive scams out there online that I feel it responsible for people to let know of this. Many huge online retailers have them won't name names but if you are able go direct through the manufacturers website, or a trusted 3rd party vendor. Thanks! Long story short, nvidia is way to expensive for me to feel justified for any of there cards atm, which was also my major driving force of buying Radeon. I'm not trying to sell nvidia short though I love them, just my wallet doesn't lol. I will test it thoroughly, but with out over clocking because I just don't have experience with it at all.

I feel the same way About Nvidia: they are just to expensive to warrant spending 20%--50% more compared to AMD for only a few % better performance. It's a no brainer for most people to get the cheaper option that is STILL HIGH QUALITY. But then again, when it comes to PC building and gamers/enthusiasts, I think it's easy for a lot of people to want to buy the best of the best of the best... Every year or 2 LOL. IN MY OPINION, you should dish out (what you can afford and if the $ makes sense) to get something that will last you for years to come. I'd say at least 2/3 years.

My observations of having 2 of these cards. The latest AMD drivers are pretty good. I haven't had any crashes or bugs on my RX 6800 XT for a while. I also have a RTX 3080 12GB. In Firestrike the 6800 XT achieves a much higher score than the RTX 3080 12GB. In Timespy the 6800 XT achieves a slightly higher score than the RTX 3080 12GB. In Port Royal as expected the RTX 3080 12GB destroys the 6800 XT. In real world gaming without ray tracing they are very close in gaming. The ray tracing performance of 6800 XT performs similar to a RTX 3060 ti. The 6800 XT uses less power and doesn't dump so much heat into my case.

> The ray tracing performance of 6800 XT performs similar to a RTX 3060 ti. Yup, people talk about AMD's RT like it's useless. When in fact it's totally adequate considering not that many games actually even implement RT well. With AMD you get more efficient GPUs, that provide more performance / per dollar. I think where this is even more pronounced is at the low end. rx6600 for instance offers amazing value for the money, that it doesn't makes sense to get anything else for under $300.
