Don’t get why NVIDIA hasn’t just changed that connector yet it just going to continue to be a problem, it’s just too small of a connector to be pulling that much power IMHO.

They have changed the connector on new batches of cards. They have the 12v2x6 connector, which so far doesn't seem to have melting cases. This has nothing to do with the connectors being too small.

cattle hivemind is real with this one. you really dont see that nvidia added those just for planned obsolescence? This much power needs to be pushed through 2x4 or 3x4 pin, not through those tiny fucking needles, the overall resistance of this connector is just garbage and they thought they couid get away with it. @@DementedLessons AMD kinda had to. Their cards architecture is designed to keep clocking higher tell they hit power limit I had a 7900xtx with a 430w budget and it ate it all tell it hit power limit of the card and this is without OCing and just maxing the power slider. The 16pin on them will have the 4090 issue a 100% of the cards sold if you think about it lol. Remember the 4090 isn't pulling 600w all the time. This connector is just not rated for even 400w+. It's not just 4090s cables that are melting. I have a 3090 (MSI Suprim X, arguably one of the top premium models) and I had to change my PCI-E power cable two times now (first time 2 years ago and 2nd time a few months ago). Suddenly my monitors went black and I could smell burnt plastic. Thank god the GPU and other components were fine and they still run fine after putting in new PCI-E cables. The problem with Nvidia's high end cards in the last few years is that they are now purposefully pushing them to the limits so that they come on top of everything else which, predictably, results in things like intermittent short peaks of 600W and more. This overwhelms the cables' capacity and they start melting. Nvidia should really rethink their desire to constantly push more and more watts with their high-end GPUs. Maybe when someone's home burns down they will change things?

Linux isn't quite ready for prime time yet. Wayland is the default display server for linux nowadays and it is only just getting to the point of being usable on nvidia cards. Desktop linux isn't ready for mainstream and it will likely never be mainstream. It is a compelling option for those tech savy individuals who want to deep dive into how their PC works along with being an option for those who are concerned about privacy and security. Perhaps linux's biggest downfall is the fragmentation of distributions. It makes developing for it a pain as there is no single target and most of the time, the targets are constantly moving.

4090 Connector: This has been my experience and the lackluster data that came with it. I'm using the ASUS Strix 4090 and have been using it since December of 2022 and started running it on a 9900K and ASUS Z390 Formula > I bought the card and used a Corsair HX1200i and the Nvidia adapter which was the 4 x 8 pin to 12+4 and worked fine and no overclock and no O.C. software (I mean what's the point since it's all based on temp anyhow. I mean Jay is right, O.C. is kind of dead) > Then I bought the Corsair 2 x 8 pin to 12+4 and I could barely get an image on my screen (well, I mean I didn't get an image until I got into windows) and when I got into a match in MW2, and after 2 minutes the screen would go black. No way to get the screen back until I restarted the PC. > Reinstalled the Nvidia adapter and everything when back to normal. > I then bought the Cable Mod 4 x 8 pin to 12+4 and it worked perfectly for a little over a year until I built a new PC on New Years Eve. So, from 12/03/2022 to 12/31/2023 > I built a new PC (which I left a comment about it in the 14900K dying and left feedback on my experience) which is the 14900K on an ASUS Z790 Dark Hero, Corsair Vengeance DDR 5 @ 6400 MHz and BeQuiet Dark Rock Pro 13 1300W PSU. When I took the 4090 out of the older PC to transfer it over and inspected the connector it was all good, no melting also never O.C. and G-Sync always locked to 240 MHz frequency of the monitor. To this day as of now it's all good "so far" "Knocks on Wood". Hopefully after I post this, I don't get any funny business. I know things can go south at any time and the bad experiences can still happen. I'm just not running my PC as hard as it can be pushed. But my experience is ok as for how fast it is at stock-ish speeds. Side note: I also use a UPS 1500VA Sinewave and I keep the power monitored at all times and the power to my house is very stable at 120V AC (-5V fluctuation) and the UPS does its job when the power does go out which is about a few times a year. I don't know if that has something to do with some people having dirty power at their house or a lot of power outages and/or no protection but it's something no one talks about or if their using a bad power supply or an underpowered PSU or even a "GOOD ENOUGHT" PSU. I have always overpowered my PCs since 2008 and on a Core 2 Duo, I was using a Cooler Master 850w 80 plus PSU (total overkill), but that PC also lasted 10+ years and the PSU lasted 13+ years. Hell, right now I'm using a Corsair AX 860i on this 4790K + RTX 2080 typing this comment and watching this video. I do like when a PC can last a decade as a daily usage machine.

PC Gamers don't always seem to like Ray Tracing. I don't think PS5 players will either. They would rather have higher resolution and frames. So the PSSR part makes sense. Its not that RT is bad, its some devs don't make it noticeable enough or just plain to big of a hit for lower end PC users.

@@BrunodeSouzaLino I agree. I still want my next GPU to be an RT GPU. I have a 6700xt playing on 3440*1440. Aiming for a 4070ti SUPER or 4080 SUPER. I won't pay no more than $600 for an AMD with its lack of RT in the games I want it in anyway. I don't think RT is a gimmick when you can see it. Its just some Devs do it better or take more time with it. Though to be fair. Game like Devil May Cry was weak in the RT department. They just threw puddles everywhere and said "hey, look at the RT". Sh*t was weak as hell. I wish and thought more games would be like Cyberpunk. Which is more the reason why I want RT and Alan Wake of course.

The Nvidia thing happened way back when they wanted the connector at 90° to the board and wanted it smaller. If they made this connector using the old size of pins it wouldn't be an issue at all. They could even lose 2 of the power pins. As for keying and accidental plug ins. They could have made a custom key, they already had to do new molds because of the added "sense/ID" pins. This is just such a fail honestly. I'm not even tempted to buy a reference card above $700 so it's not an issue for me. 4070Ti Super is the last card that makes fiscal sense anyway.
@TheGameBench
@TheGameBench Ай бұрын
If they did go with dual 12VHPWR connections, it defeats the supposed purpose of 12VHPWR in the first place. That will be hilarious if that's their solution. Especially since they could have just been more realistic about the sensing specification with the old standard and three 8-pins would FAR exceed the capability of even two 12VHPWR connections, and at worst, take up a similar amount of space. NVIDIA just needs to ditch Micro-Fit and go back to Mini-Fit, or maybe they could try Micro-Fit+ like what Corsair is using on their newer power supplies, which they claim would not have these issues. And EVGA coming back as an Intel partner... YES PLEASE!

As an IT person and a long time Linux user I agree with what you've said about Linux still not being ready for the average person. The people preaching that everyone should use Linux either only use it to run non DRM steam games and browse web or are deliberately ignoring the issues that exist. To name some issues IMEs on Wayland are a total clustertruck so good luck inputting especially asian languages in wayland native programs(hyprland, sway don't work at all while plasma is buggy and sometimes work and sometimes don't) but under xwayland it works fine as does on native Xorg. Accessibility settings under wayland are work in progress while many distros have switched to Wayland as the default display server so good luck using it for anyone with a disability. If you switch back to Xorg you can get decent accessibility tools like screen readers, magnifying etc. but I'm not sure if it covers as much as for example Windows' accessibility options do. Nvidia drivers for any card older than 16 series will likely make you pull your hair out since they're only supported by proprietary driver and it has always had bad desktop experience(I used to use gtx1060 so i know what I'm talking about). And many many more issues. I'd love to see Linux being more widely used as well but while it generally works there's still too many things that aren't polished so I'm not gonna push people to switch. If I were to suggest a distro for non tech people it would probably be OpenSUSE because they really try hard to polish the experience and have the Yast tool for configuring the system through GUI but it's still not for everyone.

Tesla needs to do the 25k cheap Tesla. Even if it has half a battery pack and you can buy the bigger pack later. Smartest move would be to make the current pack with a hollow middle section. Then lower the pack a little and have a mid-pack slide in. Not sure if it would be worth it over a half-full pack and swap the complete thing. But if they did it properly internally they should be able to pop open 2 half packs and make a full pack to sell as refurbished. They really don't care, they want to be Mercedes, not Kia. But a little hatchback Tesla with a small motor and FWD would be perfect, they could probably do another deal with Toyota for a Corolla EV (Last time was the RAV4 EV that Tesla put a motor in for them). Or spawn another low end brand (Nikko or Kola?)

Wait, you are telling me that guy is getting about 9 4090s to repair DAILY?! A single repair store? There people around his store location must have bought half of the 4090 supply in the world. Or if it gets 4090s shipped from all the country, it still makes doubt of the veracity of this claim, given that the 4090 is not such a common card due to its price, even if there is a common issue I doubt thebamount of 4090s coming in daily would be higher than all of the other cards combined. And taking into account the time it takes to fix most cards, and assuming at least 18 cards per day (plus other work not related to GPUs), either that is a very big and popular shop or this is bullshit.

I don't want to see mainstream adoption of Linux. More is good, but the ability to install an OS (not hard of course but with potential consequences) is actually a pretty good proxy for the ability to use the Linux desktop effectively.

@@blakedmc1989RaveHD It's just a more robust connector style, I'm never worried about the weight of the cable damaging the connector like I am with the 16 pin, they snap in better, they take side load much better. I specifically remember seeing PC builds where people used the 8pin power cables to help prevent GPU sag, no one will recommend that with a 4090 lol. Also I just have to say, as a long time purchaser of Nividia and gigabyte GPUs if AMD had a direct 4K competitor for the 4090, I would switch tomorrow, solely because of the power connector.

EPS 8-pin is 300W rated (each). Many Tesla, etc. "Pro/AI/MI" cards already were using it. Fun Fact: 8-pin PCI-e only specifies 3x +12V. 6-pin, 2x +12V. So, the PCIe 6-pin is current-carrying equivalent to 4-pin +12V CPU; the PCIe 8-pin is 1.5x of the 4-pin +12V CPU. EPS 8-pin is 4x +12V, 300W rated (with more 'safety' overhead)

i think with apple, its a inbetween situation there are talented people at apple for sure, that are doing really great industry leading work that's being leveraged effectively for sure vs a corporate culture of walled gardens, profit and mindset enclosing that is constantly against consumer rights, right to repair rights that government bodies had to step in legislatively and through lawsuits to get them to slowly act in accordance (not to mention the years of lobbying against measures funded by them) if it gets to that level, i dont really have sympathy to the higher ups that make these decisions, the talented people aren't on the same decision making level to that, they can only do so much theres browbeating or being unfair and then theres not willing to be screwed over for a companies sake and voicing that

I kinda dislike using the term Linux as if it’s 1 software. It’s a wide array of multiple softwares. I’m not saying I agree or disagree with the topic. Personally I just like to clarify because if 2 people have Linux, that doesn’t mean it’ll be the same. Which is why I believe Linux will have a more difficult time overall because like the host said, people don’t always want a HUGE amount of choices.

You didn't exactly argue that Linux isn't ready. You kind of agreed with the comments that marketing or external pressure needs to happen but you didn't really say why. Linux is either feature ready or it's not just saying that it's not and not giving a reason isn't really definitive. If you want to disagree then give a strong reason. Otherwise you're just agreeing that it's a marketing problem and not a feature problem

Linux is ready for the masses. But because the development is primary through communities, not big companies, there is no huge marketing budget just sitting around to give companies incentives to offer their HW with Linux primarily. It's just the state of the world, people use Windows and MacOS because it's already on the computer they bought. Even a lot of PC Games are in the middle ground, only caring that the computer they buy will run the games they want to play, almost not caring about how much eye candy they have to turn off to do it.

I'm using Linux and I always said to all new users, if your device can keep up with new Windows and updates, nothing bad happen then don't change to Linux. Linux isn't ready at all, most laptop and you don't have any fans controlls or CPU Settings and you need really thinkering to change anything. There are companies like tuxedo, system 76 and more that will provide software to they Linux PC/laptop but very often that software is broken in next update and you or downgrading or waiting for new update. lack of big companies software Adobe and more, I don't use them. happy that gaming at Linux is better but for people who playing online is difficulty because game devs don't give a damn to prepare any good anticheat for Linux, good I playing 99% single player and Windows on SSD on USB stick that I can play online or other single player games that can't be run on Linux.

The issue is coming from loose'ness, and/or thermal expansion-contraction 'walking' the connector out. Basically, these fail from 1pin getting overloaded, then starting a 'Thermal Cascade' of multiple pins heating and moving. If I've had PCIE 6 and 8pins 'walk themselves out' from sudden power outages (under load), I can only assume it's a factor in the smaller, looser(clip) +12v (12)16pin.

@@corneraction6765 Yes, but: The issue appears to be coming up @ the pins / pin geometry (under transients). The wire gauge isn't the issue, it's the pins and receptacle. One could make the conducting wire out of 12AWG pure Silver, the issue w/ nVidia's power connector would still remain.

I agree with Brett's assessment of why people are "moving" to MacOS - people are seduced by the hardware. The hardware spec is nice, but I won't buy another Mac because they are basically e-waste in the making. To the point of Apple making things "serviceable," while they have conceded the parts battle (slightly), they have not re-designed their hardware overnight to make it easy to service. Even if I move to an ARM based system in future, it won't be Apple, it will be hardware I can get serviced, and I will probably run Linux AND Windows on it, if Microsoft ever gets their ARM game together.

How far apple has fallen from their roots: " Users liked the Mac IIcx, in part, because its components and parts (such as the RAM, NuBus slots, and power supply) snapped into place inside the case without the need for screws. There was one central safety screw that tied the assembly together though it was often not reinstalled if ever removed. At the IIcx's introduction, Jean-Louis Gassée demonstrated the IIcx's modular design by assembling one from parts in front of the audience." This was in 1991. We had one of these acting as a server for a lab of Apple II gx's in a computer lab I helped run in college.

I use Mac hardware for 3 reasons. 1 - nothing has ever become e-waste. My 2014 mini is still going (granted it’s running Linux now). 2 - my laptop runs all day on battery and I don’t even bring a charger with me when I leave the house. 3 - being able to use my laptop, iPad, accessories, and phone so seamlessly. I’m not constantly having to pair my Bluetooth devices to use them across my devices and iMessage on all my devices is really convenient. I hate the green/blue bubble crap and the App Store fees are too high… that said, I’m not willing to change as there isn’t a platform that doesn’t have infuriating drawbacks that directly effect my experience.
