Opening stores seem to be the trivial part. I hear businesses who leave New York, get fined and billed for decades to come afterwards because nobody in New York know about the concept of closing a store, and think they run for eternity.

The small shops you see in NYC usually have long standing contracts that have been grandfathered in. The moment they sell their lot a similar store would not be able to open without paying a massive fee.

Yup! MTA buses even take you there. My family and I lived in Jamaica and we used to take the Q85 or the Q5 all the way to the Green Acres Walmart. Not a pleasant a trip but it was either a 1 hour bus ride for the cheapest groceries or a 25 minute walk to an outrageously priced key food in a low-income neighborhood.

If Walmart were to launch in NYC, it would probably launch on the outskirts of Queens, Brooklyn and the Bronx at shopping malls with huge parking lots such as Jamaica, Flushing, Yonkers & Coney Island or they would probably open in a massive warehouse near JFK, as it would be much cheaper and they would get more space compared to if they were to open in Lower Manhattan or Midtown.

I have worked for Walmart, Target, and Officemax and I can assure you, of the three and various smaller places I have worked, Walmart treats their employees like crap! They would deny you breaks but marked down that you did. Really, you are just another piece of office equipment to them. Target was a nice place to work (a decade ago, it's probably different now), you got your breaks on time and was actually a pleasant place to work.

It’s just the type of people that Walmart gets Used to work there and while the job was good, some of the customers aren’t Working at another store, I no longer get the “I’m reporting you to the manager” for a minor slip up (or it was the customer’s at times)

Did you notice the loading dock at that Costco. They had equipment parked in front of the trailers, bet that equipment didn't have the keys in them! Eughhhh… Walmarts are usually found more in small towns than Sam’s Club (owned by WM), which is more than Costco. Costco is more of the city distribution center, even then it’s not in half of cities. Found a WM (340 total in Fl) and SC (46) in both Ocala and Pensacola in Florida. Costco’s (31) only in Orlando w Disney, Tampa, and Naples.

Anything cost that is spent on buying local is made back by being close and not needing a car. Asian markets are everywhere, and have most things that the community need and are often closer than Target is. You mainly go to Target for toiletries.

You are absolutely correct. They destroyed the local mom and pop stores in my community. Now there is nowhere to shop for quality merchandise. Everything they sell is inferior quality including the food. I make an 80 mile round d trip to get my groceries at Trader Joes. With gas it is still cheaper and the food is good quality. I am curious to know which h local politicians paid off a mortgage, purchased a boat or went on a European holiday around that time. The wishes of the local community are disregarded, what else is new. Walmart employees have to go to social services for medical, food stamps, etc. because they are not paid a living wage, putting the burden on the local taxpayer. They use the local police as their security instead of hiring people trained in loss prevention. They threaten to close the store if the employees want to unionize. New Yorkers are very much aware of what Walmart is about and they do not want it. Imo Cashs' knowledge about Walmart and NYC is superficial.

BTW Trader joe's parent company aldi also offer deliver service, so I don't know why you're still driving 80 miles to buy grocery if you just plan ahead and bulk buy and have them deliver it to you.

I lived in a town of 10,000 growing up. We had a vibrant main street with lots of mom and pop shops. Wal Mart came in in about 1980. It didn’t take long at all after that for all the businesses on Main Street to close down. Now the population is 6000 and a vibrant small town the 1980s is more poverty ridden and all the stores downtown are closed. 😔

@@guardianali I'm gonna say as a New Yorker living in Brooklyn, there are Trader Joes you can visit. Also lots of local grocers have prices on the low, you just need to know where to look. Especially china town, there are videos where people go in and try to see how much food they can get with 20$. I buy groceries for a little over 100$ for myself and my husband. As someone who has seen and suffered the faults of bad management under a corporation, I'd rather not see unsafe practices being used. The ethicacy on that is pretty clear to me, but that is just me personally. You don't go preform a study even if it will benefit thousands if it will cause harm to even one person.

@@markcornelius5291 There are very specific rules with Health Insurance what is covered, and what is considered part time worker that is different here from the rest of the country where Walmart fines loopholes with. They wanted laws removed that smaller grocery stores were willing to abide by. It is why there is on on Long Island just outside the city limits but no-where within.

Before ObamaCare health insurance was a lot cheaper and one got more coverage for that less expensive premium. And WAY back, one didn't even get health insurance at work. One bought it privately like one does with home and auto insurance which, frankly, is the way it should be. I just wish government would stay out of stuff, most of the problems we are facing is because government keeps sticking its nose into stuff it has no business in.

@@dianedenham5259 My idea is that public traded grocers would be required to pay their employees enough of an income to disqualify them from food stamps & other similar benefits so the feds & interior state governments who struggle with tax revenue wouldn't be giving tax revenue to stores through employees who shop where they work. I don't mind companies but it's obvious that these public traded companies who record billions of dollars of profit should be held at a higher standard, especially since international investors can buy the stocks of those public traded grocers. It's pretty telling that the progressives who hate walmart love Costco, so it's not about hating corporations for being corporations.

Over night stocking clerk for the first 24 hour wally world in Indy early 90's, horrid treatment when I asked for a day off, as I also had a 9-5 40 hour regular days of the week job, manager said goodby.. I recently lost my phone in wally world way late at night, no one would help me see if it was going to ring in the store or at home, had to get the police to help me and he wasn't going to.. hate Sherwood Ar for that one.

I worked at Wal-Mart from 2018-2020. I was working late the night before Black Friday up here in Canada which isn't as big of a deal as the States, and they asked me to come in during Black Friday at 6 in the morning. I needed the money so I accepted. Came in with a coffee, as its 6 in the morning. Immediately the produce manager screams at me "If I'm not allowed to have a coffee, your not either, go dump it immediately". I looked at her and said "I don't get paid enough to dump this coffee. I'll put it in my car, but I'm not dumping it.". Grabbed my safety vest and left out the door. Empty parking lot btw, as all the customers were inside, immediate write up for not having my vest "on", despite me having it over my shoulder, clearly visible. I'll take the blame for that one, that's on me. But in the 3 years I was there, I got yelled at daily, at least 6 or 7 times a day. All by managers that weren't my direct manager, because they were allowed to abuse their power. And its not like I was doing anything wrong either. I could be out in the middle of grabbing carts and one of them would yell at me or one of my coworkers. We had a coworker sit down to tie his shoes and he got written up for being "lazy". This same coworker failed to inform my other coworker of a frayed wire on our cart manager machine, and nearly electrocuted him (his jacket got burn marks). Threw their hands up, did nothing. It got so bad, that the day I quit to go back to college, my entire department mass quit. They had to shut down the department for 6 months because none of their other staff wanted to work there, knowing how poorly we were being treated. I have so many stories about that store, and other retail stores I've worked that when I finally experienced my first "real" job last year it was a culture shock to me, seeing managers actually give a damn about me and my coworkers.

I worked at a Walmart for a summer in my early 20s, they were horrible at scheduling at this place, I was having to close at midnight and come back in the morning at 7 am to open quite a few times, I don't remember if there are any labor laws in California for time between shifts, but if there were, this store wasn't following it, lol, I was so tired and over worked, even though I was only part time, it was almost like I was a full time worker without all the benefits, lol, I got really sick that summer too, I asked to be moved to a different department that had different hours, more consistent hours, and they wouldn't even think of it, so I didn't last very long at that place, this was in 2002 I think, I'm 43 now

Former Walmart employee. The people who work at Walmart and get welfare would get welfare anywhere else they could get a job. A lot of these people are developmentally disabled or have other problems that keep them from getting better jobs, like the lady who couldn't work more than four hours a day who I worked with. Others were simply people like me who didn't have marketable skills, and once I had some I left Walmart as many others do. In fact if not for Walmart most of these people wouldn't have a job at all. If too much is spent on welfare that's a policy problem

Walmart had stores there until this year but Walmart was tired of the scumbags destroying the stores completely and 37 Walmart stores got destroyed in less than 3 weeks and so Walmart shut all other 80 plus stores down because they are not playing games with thugs and scumbags. If you don't want food then you don't get food. 0% of Walmart employees qualify for government support because unlike all other stores Walmart actually pays its employees a real living wage. Walmart’s website totally blows! I’d rather shop online anymore than store front shopping. People are rude and disrespectful not at me an individual but the prices are outrageous which makes us all disgusted by the time we even hit the Walmart Self-Checkout a gigantic pain in the ass.

Walmart has made some stores in places similar to Australia (kinda), effectively subsidized by the American stores. They effectively just become blue Target.

We have several Neighborhood Walmarts in our area- along with the super centers.... its a nice option.

NY has Walmart, but NYC doesn’t. I live in Queens and I’m 20 min away from a Walmart, but it’s in LI. You even hear a lady mention it in this video.

If Walmart were to launch in NYC, it would probably launch on the outskirts of Queens, Brooklyn and the Bronx at shopping malls with huge parking lots such as Jamaica, Flushing, Yonkers & Coney Island or they would probably open in a massive warehouse near JFK, as it would be much cheaper and they would get more space compared to if they were to open in Lower Manhattan or Midtown.

Most big cities don't have a wal mart because they make more money residing just outside the city limits in the "burbs". Property taxes and income taxes are cheaper along with a more reliable labor force.

Neither does Inner Chicago. But when they finally opened one, they end up needed to Close them because they are losing money. I went to it, the Parking Lot size is not big enough for their store traffic, the Parking Lot was extremely Chaotic.

Right. A good example of Walmart demanding cheaper and lower quality items is Levi's jeans. Levi's makes a special cheap line of jeans to sell at Walmart. They are much lower quality and don't look as good or last as long. Target just sells a small selection of regular top quality Levi's.

I agree. I wanted to but something that was locked up behind plexiglass. I forget what it was. It was a long time ago. The woman who unlocked the plexiglass followed me to the till to make sure that I bought it. Anyways, I didn't like the experience.

Aldi and Lidl are cheaper than Walmart and both are in NYC with many food stores.

@@TJ-um8ce Interesting word salad you tossed out there. I have lived in this area for about 30 years. I watched WalMart run several grocery stores out of business, then took control over the area. So, I think I may know what I am talking about.

Now once that city starts flourishing and people start moving in, I think it'll be a different situation but that'll be a time far, far into the future. But yes, the cheaply priced goods will definitely attract not only the one's that can pay for a higher price but also the one's that are living in extreme-poverty. Like was mentioned, 100k/year is still struggling in NYC, but what about those making under 50, 60k/year? They'll also be going. Children, teens, thugs, hoodlums, etc will all be going because that's the clientele that Wal-Mart 1000% attracts. I remember visiting Patterson with some friends over a 15+ years ago, and haven'[t been back since. I'm sure it's definitely come up a lot since then.

The Walmarts I goto are all nice and clean. Their are 3 of them that I pop in and out of on a regular basis and I have been to Walmarts all over the west. Your perception of the walmarts being trashy is just your perception and yours only.

I’ve been to several states. As a rule, I think medium sized towns with economic stability have pretty nice Walmarts, particularly their supercenters.

The reason why walmarts are the way you say they are is because of their cheap prices, they attract people who are there for the cheaper prices who are fairly often not the cleanest or nicest people. i personally have not seen a walmart in the condition you are mentioning.
