The NYC Subway just keeps getting worse, and now since more and more riders use it without paying, it's becoming a lawless dump instead of the world class transit system new yorkers deserve....

The shrink is gonna tell the city that it's the MTA's fault that people enter the subway illegally, and that those poor people are victims. The fare evaders then use the shrink's analysis to file a class action lawsuit against the MTA for "forcing" them to jump the turnstiles.

I'm from Germany and i am amazed how Americans managed to mess this up so badly. There are no gates and nothing stopping you from getting onto buses and trains. Very rarely there is a conductor checking the tickets but it happens like once every 100 rides. Yet fare evasion isn't nearly as big an issue here as it seems to be in New York. And i can assure you, this most certainly isn't because Germans are some morally superior people. It's simply because fares are actually affordable for poor people here.
@Potatwielder

But you have gates for commuter trains and metro right, right?😅
@theincrediblefox
@theincrediblefox Ай бұрын
@@Potatwielder Nope. No gates, barriers or anything. You can just walk onto any train platform if you want. What i'll say though, is that on commuter trains conductors checking for tickets are a bit more common, maybe like once every 20 rides or so and on long distance and high speed trains there are conductors on almost every single train.

@@Potatwielder Metro trains (or U-Bahn in German), Commuter Train (S-Bahn) or Regional Trains all do NOT have gates in Germany, you can walk straight into the trains, and many stations are very simple, with only platforms. The key is to actually have some punishment (60 euros) for those who are caught by ticket inspectors. Inspectors randomly ride trains and busses to check tickets. Also there's a somewhat cheap Deutschlandsticket, with which you can ride all regional/communtor train/busses for 49 euros per month (29 for students).
@FrankieBoy-whatever
@FrankieBoy-whatever Ай бұрын
Same in Vienna. You could just walk in without a ticket as there is nothing like a gate. In case you get caught, which hardly ever happens you pay a fine of around 100€. Seeing that a yearly ticket is only 365€ to ride all public transportation in the city it’s just not worth the risk, even if getting caught is extremely unlikely

Hey NYC, here is your solution: MAKE THE FARE FREE. And tax more in city tax to cover the costs to run it. Benefits: Very few people tax evade; fare evasion won't be a thing; MORE tourism because it is FREE to go almost anywhere in NYC meaning more business coming into NYC, meaning more sales tax, meaning more income for the city Downside: Politicians don't get to line their pockets whilst thinking short-term and fucking up everyday lives.

Where I'm living there's no physical barrier in the subway, you can enter without a pass or ticket, but sometimes there are subway conductors at the exit. You must show your pass/ticket to exit otherwise you have to pay a fine. Most people have a pass because if you use public transport daily you're likely to get fined for way more than the pass would've cost you. The fine is about 2.5x of a monthly pass.

@@WICK_3D I believe one can be both criminal and victim. Here me out. I'm an individualist, and I believe that people always have the ultimate decision on how things go down for themselves, under arrest? resist or comply, breakout, bail, or stay your time. Someone threatening you? kill them, let them kill you, flee... I believe that even if events can prevent a desired outcome, immediate decisions are always viable and the individual alone is responsible for those actions. with this in mind, I believe that people who don't pay for fairs, is labelled a criminal, because while they were pushed to make a decision, they could have just not taken the fair, and pay later or pay if they had enough. Now, in the opposing side, is that people would likely not commit the crime if they weren't pushed that far, and I agree with that. Theft would be non-existent if the community was high-trust, afluent, and had tight-knit relations. But people are pushed by circumstances and nowhere is perfect, that's understandable. That's why I agree with self-defence, that while you're killing, the situation was pressured onto you. Anyway this rant is getting long, so take with what you will.

I have seen the stark difference of how Japan runs its public transport compared to New York. The efficiency, cleanliness, safety are top notch and no one ever thinks of fare evading. It probably is never thought of that one would definitely stand out if they do so with impunity. There were transport officers, but they mostly served to direct people where to go and provided information when asked. It truly was amazing. It was also absolutely safe to walk in the streets at night, and we did so several times with no fear of being accosted, stabbed or shot. All the convenient stores are open 24/7 and some of their merchandise are actually displayed right outside and no one dares to steal. I don't think I've seen homeless folks too. And that's just two of hundreds of issues that have been boiling for a long time, and without major and critical ground up Reformation of the police and laws they enforce from a foundational Level they won't be earning back the respect of the people for a long time. The reason why the Japan public transport system is so well run & maintained is because it is privately run. It also doesn’t operate 24 hours a day, which allows time for regular maintenance. As for the Japanese society, their citizens have affordable housing, health care, affordable food… it’s a society that isn’t necessarily rich but their basic needs are met # something that millions of Americans are unable to do. And it’s worth noting their society doesn’t have the American individualism & consumerism. Unfortunately too many Americans are a selfish lot.

It’s like NYC is pretending to be stupid at this point. They stop enforcing fare evasion and a boatload of other laws, then people don’t pay for the fare because there are no consequences, then MTA raises the fares while doing nothing about fare evasion, and now more people start not paying their fare. Those that paid before see this insanity and stop paying. And honestly why should they? If the city refuses to do anything about crime and makes law abiding citizens pay more to subsidize criminality, people aren’t going to care anymore and ride for free. There has to be a standard that applies to everyone, not just the law abiding “suckers” that end up footing the bill, while criminals get excuses because… they’re criminals?? SMH

"no emergency exit" is an immediate red flag, no matter what systems you have in place to open the gates in an emergency. what if for whatever reason, there's nobody in the booth during an emergency? what if there's a power outage and the gates can't open? there's a reason that wouldn't fly in the united states: fire regulations prohibit it, and for good reason. on that note, doors that are spring-loaded and thus open when power to the motor/solenoid/whatever is cut along with an emergency override switch on the wall that mechanically cuts power to the gates and activates the fire alarm would be a good solution that balances safety with stopping fare-dodgers.

@@comradeLuciennetrust me, sweeden has far more strict fire protection and emergency exit laws than the US. And the system in Sweeden can empty any Station in less than 1 minute. The gates shown in this video would allow a max of 100 people in 1 minute, so assuming you have 3 gates per exit that means a max of 300 people per minute. To keep your city operational, you need to make sure that people, resources and data reach their destination in time. And since it would get worse if everybody were using their own car and being stuck in traffic jam, the solution is, to move as many people at the same time as possible, like with public transport. Paywalls hinder the flow. Taxpaid and feeless public transport will make sure that that everyone reaches their destination and that a city stays healthy. A concept that different cities among europe successfully try.

Why not just have the gates be the same way as in sweden. On those you can't really jump over. And they don't have any weird emergency doors that people can use. For the reason that all of the gates opens automatically if you go near them, so all of the gates basically also serve as the exits, which of course, negates the need of an emergency exit. Engineers mind: since the current system clearly is not working let's look at what other countries are doing and take a peek into the past. Perhaps it was doomed to fail from the get-go. Re-evaluate our decisions and come up with an improved design. Politicians mind: can we block the emergency exit? Ah? I didn't hear it. These people need an emergency exit?.. Okay, put a time lock on these things. These posts of our highly trained military officers and policeman are costing so much money, we need to increase the fare. What do you mean the people won't be able to afford it? What are they, poor?
