1.5 million New Yorkers lack access to high-speed internet.
According to New York City’s research, 40% of households lack either home or mobile broadband connection. And over 1.5 million New Yorkers lack both. This digital divide throws up massive barriers to education, employment, health, banking, social networking, and government service options.
One non-profit is looking to challenge the top dogs by providing people with another option of where they get their internet. And they’re doing so by building an internet infrastructure that is cheaper and potentially more reliable.
According to NYC Mesh, their mesh internet approach provides numerous advantages. First and foremost: it’s low cost, a key concern for closing the digital divide. NYC Mesh’s service fees are donation based, with the organization suggesting $20-60 depending on what a member can afford. It’s free for those who cannot afford to donate.

@@BhanuPrakash-hk5iu Bhai that's because, literally everything would be cheap in India if U were to compare it to the US. Cheapest internet, by purchasing-power parity, is in Israel 👍. Moreover Ambani doesn't have much profit motive, he keeps the profit minimal, just enough to survive. Otherwise his main income is also from oil and petroleum industry 😂😂. US is different case

The government sells its powers to the highest bidder. Which leads to more and more regulations which make it impossible for new companies to provide competition. Capitalism is great, it works amazingly, with competition driving down costs, improving the quality of services, but government gets involved and ruins everything. Government is evil born by good intentions. In Romania we had the freedom to do just about anything after we executed our dictator and brought back capitalism, and it lead to us having the highest internet speeds in europe and the lowest prices. You can get 1Gbps speeds for about 7 euros a month. Even in the country side you get around 300Mbps. I'm saying this because people get angry at the low internet speeds, or bad and expensive healthcare in countries without socialized healthcare and so on and so forth but they go out there and demand more government interference, when that's truly what's caused the problem to begin with.

In Deutschland gibt es "freifunk" in vielen Städten, das ist so ähnlich. Aber ihr WLAN Mesh-Network hat eher den Fokus auf Freiheit und Anti-Zensur, statt auf günstigerem Zugang in abgehängten Gebieten.

On a more serious note: Are American (and Spanish) ISP's such Bastards that they carve up their territory so that nobody has a choice and is forced to pay whatever they charge them? That's fucked up. As much as Telekom sucks at least they got enough decency to not exploit people living in the countryside by charging ridiculous prices because they have no alternative.

@@AIRRAZOR44 believe it or not, we've seen speed tests of 100mbps or higher. The backbone comes from dedicated Fiber links at their supernodes. Something that cable can't match is the near symmetrical upload speeds. A recent speed test showed 100D/75U. More than sufficient for gaming and video streaming. And you feel better not giving money to a big corporation! The performance will continually improve as more nodes come online, adding redundancy and reducing oversubscription of the larger hubs.

Just to put it in a perspective: 40usd per month gives you 100-250mb/s broadband in almost any scandinavian city/town/remote village. Or it's just included in the rent. The fact that in NYC you need a non profit and volunteers to do that is mind boggling...

This isn't really a "mesh" network is it? It's a traditional hub and spoke network. I thought to be a mesh, then all nodes connect to closest nodes to create links and clever software is always running to figure out optimal routes as nodes go up and down or possibly move around. In a true mesh network, scaling is less of an issue but the number of hops and latency go up significantly.

Indeed, not a true "mesh" network but the idea of having a directional antenna pointing to a node with a secondary omnidirectional repeater for others to connect to is quite impressive. The main node is very crucial however, if it goes down, the entire system goes down. Very much against the principle of a "mesh" network.

yeah this approach does leave it vulnerable to hostile takeover. How else would you connect to the internet if not through a supernode? If one supernode goes down just point the dish at another supernode. More supernodes would be needed to ensure redundancy for more people.

I hope this becomes global... In the Philippines, our internet is freaking slow (1-8Mbps) yet very expensive... The internet monopoly here is just mind-blowing..... So to the founders of NYC mesh please introduce your product to other countries... Thank you!!!

@@dislike__button Nah, there's people like me that would be happy to invest stupid amounts into hardware, and that's probably a large part of the costs. There's also a ton of other HAM people that would get involved just out of boredom so you'd also see everyone from young tech enthusiasts like myself (who are used to seeing speeds like 1 Mbps and happy to invest in things to push 1 Gbps and beyond), to retired HAM techs that just want an excuse to get out of the house.

Government allocates municipal monopolies to operate geographically at the exclusions of competitors. Monopolies do what monopolies do, and milk the demand because there is an artificially limited supply. Government complains about profit and monopoly. Makes perfect sense. /s

Capitalism is what happened in Romania after socialism evaporated and deregulation allowed for competition. Although impoverished, Romania was a top three country in bandwidth and internet choice.

In most western countries, the US specifically, bribe-givers (known as lobbyists in the US) incentivize monopolies in its own market (Amazon, Disney, Coca Cola, etc) by not breaking them up, or bailing them out when they start to see a significant loss of profits. They further incentivize companies that establish monopolies overseas through the use of economic sanctions, military interventions, and internal sabotage among other crimes (United Fruit Company in El Salvador and the Military Industrial Complex's stranglehold on the world for example).

@@_.Leo_. It's ironic when we talk about the faults of one's education system, when the very next words are not even the core functions of what we claim to be describing. Do realize that Socialism is work and all other entities being collectively owned by the workers and the public - NOT the state. Corporatocracy and Socialism are two entirely different things. What you claim to be Socialism is just another part of Capitalism. The United States Postal Service (USPS) for example is a state monopolized entity, since it is one of the two primary public mail carriers in the United States, the other being the United Parcel Service (UPS). These two entities are responsible for the most packages delivered in the United States, more than every other privately owned mail carrier service in the United States, combined.

This is an amazing, practical and frankly beautiful idea. The corporate monopolies are only interested in profit and engage in more 'financial engineering' than real engineering or fulfilling the needs of ordinary people. Support this as best you can folks. It's a great thing.

40 years ago I thought the same thing about phone service, that everyone should have it regardless of ability to pay for it. Much of the poor could not afford to have a single phone in their house. I think this wireless service being set up in New York is fantastic and should be expanded everywhere. Too bad we can't do the same sort of thing with water service.

I wonder how this will compare with Starlink, which should be available everyone pretty soon. Hopefully this can just drive down prices even further. Rolling out cheap internet widely is one of the most important opportunities. Everyone needs reliable and fast internet access.

Starlink is $99/mo for average speed. It's a theoretical project that never should've left the ground with our non-existence extraplanetary infrastructure. Even at $99/mo they will struggle to become profitable, and probably abandon the project before they recoup the investments. Especially now that 5G is rolled out... and Starlink was only borderline viable when compared to the stupidly low range of 5G.

Starlink is pretty expensive and can only connect to a low amount of people. It won't bring down costs, only provide fast internet to people that can afford the high price and make earth-based astrometry more difficult. I hope that the engineers make sure that these satellites won't collide with other ones, because if they do they could cause a Kesler syndrome preventing us to go to space for a long time.

@@shashi_ it won't. Launching 42 000 satellites every 5 years would cost 4 billion$/year with each satellite being able to service around 1 000 people. So with 2/3 of the satellites over the ocean at any given time that gives you 14 Million potential customers. Assuming you can get that many customers you would need to charge around 300$/year just to break even. And that's only in the ideal case where everyone around the world can afford Starlink and the customers are spread out evenly across the globe. A more realistic amount of customers would lead to a 900$/year price just to break even, which is pretty close to the current price of around 1200$/year.

I get the impression that they will only be available in underserved areas (rural). If they don't SpaceX will be cannibalising on sales of satellite launches or getting themselves into regulatory issues in countries where telecom monopolies have great influence on regulators. They can basically only go where big players don't want to go. Knowing Elon's ability to get funding from states (nation-states) this might be their aim, subsidised connections and highly specialised connections (e.g. ships). On price, it isn't that bad, in vast parts of the world you are getting 2, 5 or 10mbps at prices around half of what Starlink is offering. So proportionally it isn't that bad.

My children and I never went online until 2018 me on my phone I shared with my partner.and the kids really missed out on the benefits you have with every book at your fingertips with a crowd of others to collaborate .I am still spellbound .I use it to learn.I spoke with my family for the first time in ten or more years .I now feel like everyone knows more than me .But watch out !I will get there.

@@jaimepuig2258 I live in Chennai, but the data cost is about the same all across India, countryside you might not get a fiber connection but decent mobile data is available everywhere, you can get 20-30mbps speed, 2.5GB/day data cap for 28days for 4.65$/month, with unlimited free calls and amazon prime membership for 28days.

we had several organizations like that here in Egypt but the gov fought them harshly by sizing their hardware and fining them so that the only ISP can thrive and continue its monopoly and market domination

I suspect they use end-user access points without regard of the terms of service. Perhaps they have a way to get around it by swopping out the primary connection enough so that ISPs basically will need to play wack-a-mole. I can see this being workable in a high density area like NYC but when your primary access points are limited the ISPs will catch-on quick and throttle, shape or suspend service.

I've seen this before but it was a Ghanaian gentleman who was doing it but it had all wires extending across the whole village same idea same effect

This kind of thing needs to happen everywhere. We shouldn't have to rely on providers who charge us for access to something that is owned by the entire population and was meant for everyone. I live on an island in Washington State where this would be extremely helpful to everyone here. It would lower the cost of everything for everyone, and thus the economy would boom.

This is awesome. I built a free wireless network around rural Lake Wyola in Shutesbury, MA in the late 90's. There was only crappy dialup at the time. Got a T-1 at the closest, highest house I could and beamed it 1.5 miles to the far side of the lake, then distributed it to homes around the lake. We covered a few hundred houses in wifi - all with donations and volunteer effort. Currently my town, Northampton, MA is about to build a municipal fiber network allowing providers to compete for our business while we own the last mile. It's the ultimate solution - I proposed fiber-to-the-neighborhood along with wifi to bridge the last few hundred feet but was won over by having a separate fiber to each residence - once done it is future-proof.

I live in Rio de Janeiro, one of the largest cities in Brazil. The other day i went to the countryside to visit my grandparents and getting there I was astonished to discover that a city 30x smaller than mine offered far superior internet while being cheaper. After that, I went on searching the reasons for this nonsense and found that, besides some other variables, it basically came down to competition and monopolies. I remain dreaming of a day we will become more worried about being fair and putting our communities` interests above individual ambitions.

Great job guys , I live in South Africa and we are facing the same problem if not worse because we have one of the highest data prices in the world. I wish there could be such initiative here I would gladly volunteer

I I knew this should happen but I'm not equipped to always convey my ideas and of course life gets in the way,I feel very impressed by the idea that you knew how to implement the dish idea get them built etc,Scratching my head on that one!But a child or adult without access is at a disadvantage. I still haven't sent an email so I should know! I moved to England when they only had one phone company!!!!Please continue your work it might be the difference between life and death in future lives ,Knowledge is power👍 R

It is called a WISP, not a mesh. I own and run a WISP business. It is called AP's not nodes. Then each client has a CPE to get the internet. They are installing Ubiquiti equipment. Same as what we use in our systems.

I'll be going to NY on July. It'd be awesome if I could see this up close. I work for a WISP and this concept looks great. Ham radio operators also use a similar setup with modified equipment of the same brand. But their network is on the private side because of licensing issues. Although you can tunnel in from anywhere in the world to one of the meshes if they're setup for it.

Amazing idea and I really hope it succeeds. Mesh networks can be an excellent solution to problems with infrastructure costs or access to retrofit it. Line of sight is free of cost and free of obstructions so a place like NYC is actually a fantastic environment for this because there is an actual landscape of free towers essentially. It's just like the game where you have a maze and you have to get a laser through to the finish which is impossible until you add the reflective mirrors to bounce it all around and the hubs/repeaters are the mirrors for the maze. But what if the maze is very complicated like the view of downtown NYC from above. You definitely can't get your laser through a physical building which is why you have to play the maze and go all sorts of directions on the streets of NYC to eventually find the finish and by that time you are exhausted and can barely speak so you won't be much good at communicating. This is where the landscape actually helps you because it adds the Z-axis or 3rd dimension with the possibility to jump walls as long as you can get a mirror or set of mirrors up in the sky that can reflect all over as long as it's visible to the laser at the start and the next mirror beyond that and the one beyond that and so on. It all gets even better when you see that wireless transmission is conical so the mirrors don't even exactly have to line up like a laser does, it would be like using a flashlight and each mirror instead of only being able to reflect the laser losing intensity at each mirror actually becomes a sensor. Let's replace the mirror with a nice boy named Gary and Gary has his own flashlight and when he senses/sees a light then he passes it on by shining his light towards little Timmy which is bright and renews the strength of the light at each stop until the finish. Yay NYC Mesh

On a serious note, what is stopping these providers from suing this out of existence, like the community / city broadband movement a decade back. I don't remember the exact city but the lawsuits were so expensive that the city decided to settle, with the city being limited to only existing connections. If anything, the providers can pressure the super-node provider to not provide the final connection to the internet. What's stopping that from happening?

They aren't big enough yet. Also I'm certain that people using this free net would not use the Internet provided by providers who do sue.

@@stevenvonhofsten331 I think all the mini nodes do eventually connect to the mother node to access the internet. I think from the piece they're saying it's a fiber connection. My point is that this specific provider can get pressure to disconnect them once the incumbents feel like their bottom line is affected. I wouldn't get past them to pay this fiber provider for their effort to cut them off.

America has never been a member of the non-aligned movement and is by definition 1st world since it is an ally of the USA. A bit hard to get around that. The three worlds model has to do with political alliances, not developmental status. Switzerland is a third world country and has always been.
