Critical Role fans united at ReedPop's MCM London back in 2019, and one critter had a personal question for DM Matt Mercer: how do you get a wife as cool as Marisha Ray.
Critical Role Funkos available for preorder from Entertainment Earth! fave.co/2FJcric
For this panel, we were joined by Matthew Mercer and adventurers Liam O'Brien, Marisha Ray, Taliesin Jaffe, and Sam Riegel, as well as Between the Sheets host Brian W. Foster. Find out Matt Mercer's DM dating tips and why Liam O'Brien's accent was so important to German Critters.

Moreover, he turned this cookie-cutter advice into the best one ever. Speaking from my experience, we may not realise it, but we constantly hide or... underplay certain aspects of ourselves to please another person, to make the conversation more smooth. And this is fine, this is basic courtesy. But when you find someone with whom you can be yourself to the fullest, it hits different.

Reminds me of that quote about “what’s a soulmate” that makes its rounds around the internet again and again. I totally get it too. My girlfriend and I have been dating for 11 years, nearly 12 at the time I post this. We’ve been best friends since long before though so that’s an added 5 years of that on top of the dating years. I’ve known her more than half my life now. But yes, the amazing part that clued us in that we didn’t just love each other platonically, but also romantically, was that we both don’t like touch much, yet would always welcome it, regardless of our mental state, if it was each other. I always felt more me, a better me, and she motivated me every day to be a newer and better me and supported me even when I couldn’t quite be better or when I was at my worst. I have always tried to do the same for her. I want to do the same for her. But yeah, she reminds me every day why I would choose her again and again. I wish you the best of luck in your relationship and hope it’s still going strong. Thank you for your post. It’s nice to hear there are others out there with long term relationships that feel so wholesome.

I think the "bait and switch" tactic is what kills a lot of relationships. This idea that you can "finally be yourself" after moving in with someone, etc. and then wonder why the dynamic between you changed for the worse. Can you blame them? You were pretending to be someone you're not and that's who you made them fall in love with. And to think "well they should love me no matter what" is just an excuse to change into someone they didn't fall in love with and pretend they should love you all the same. Be yourself and find someone who loves the things that make you, you. And no, there's nothing wrong with changing yourself to become a better version of you. That's called growth.

That IS the dream for us all... to find a person to D&D with... to fall in love and to play happily ever after... I've been a DM since I was 15 and I'm still looking. But my first love will always be the game itself.

He has such a distinctive voice, I can recognize him in any role he does, regardless of the accent, even though he can completely submerge himself into a character. I just adore him, and could listen to him read a phone book. Liam is awesome. And watching him and Sam together makes me so very happy, they play off each other so well.

I thing I will add to Mercer's advice: While it is true that you should not try to hide who you are, there is nothing wrong with changing who you are if you have flaws. If you have a lot of issues don't just be like "oh the person I love is going to love me for me", yes that might (or might not) be true, but if you don't even love yourself enough to at least try to put in the effort to improve yourself, then how do you expect others to love you? Relationships are as they say a 2-way street. You can't just keep taking, or just keep giving. There needs to be a balance, and you both have to stand on equal footing, one way or the other.

Yep. One of the great ironies of great relationships is that to find one you have to put in the work to be a happy and whole individual without one. If you are relying on another person for your sense of happiness and fulfillment that relationship is doomed. The other thing that most people forget is that in a healthy relationship both people have to show true love which is defined by selflessness. You have to be willing to sacrifice some of your own comfort and preference for the sake of the other person. If one or both people can't do this, the relationship is doomed without serious intervention.

I tried to transcipt the signal in this awesomeness 🙂 Mr Mercer says: No, ah... I'm glad you can come here for Mercer's Dating Tips... Rule one: prepare for dissapoinment. Because I don't know how this happened! Man honestly, it sounds so hackney but be yourself because the perfect person and the awesome person is gonna appreciate you for all of your weirdness and all of your idiosyncrasies and your corks and your frustrations and your anxieties and your depression and all the things that come to being a human being. and you want to make sure that you don't hide those aspects, You want to find somebody that can see you as a full picture and go: Yeah, let's go ahead and spend the rest of our lives together.

To be fair, Gaara had a wonderful redemptive character arc. Liam can play a deliciously wicked villain, though. He’s just so talented.
