NYS&W SU-99 through Paterson as Cars Fail to Stop Behind Crossing Gates

READ DESCRIPTION - A 3 mile drone chase of New York Susquehanna and Western SU-99 through the City of Paterson on 9/12/22. Two motorists at Madison Ave stop beyond the crossing gates up against the tracks, nearly in the path of the approaching train. Later at the 4th Ave grade crossing, another vehicle actually drives around the crossing gates moments before the train arrives.

Some people don’t deserve to have a drivers license, while I was railfanning at Phompton industrial every time the crossing gates would go down you would hear the tires of multiple cars screeching trying to stop.

Of the hundreds of train videos I've watched, including several/many that used a drone, this is the first one that had a drone following the train. What a unique perspective. It is almost as if I never saw the other ones. T H A N K S

@@northjerseyaerialrail9597 Whats the range on your drone? I was told I have 450m or about 1400 ft of distance between controller and drone for active video feed.. I feel this may have been at the limits and you may have been positioned in the middle and have tested the range out beforehand?

@@matthewsage6412 I had a centrally located, elevated position. It was not entirely tested, although by my calculations I figured that it'd be completely okay with range and battery life which worked out in the end

I see you stopped just as it was about to cross over to Hawthorne, I lived on Passaic Street in Hawthorne as a kid and this train line was in our backyard. I would run down to put pennies and nickels on the train tracks for the trains to squish. We would also walk down the tracks to the Wag fields to play baseball.

That was so cool! I've never seen R.R. tracks cut diagonally across an intersection like that, much less several in a row. Great job following it for 3 miles. I don't own a drone, but I know they have their limits with radio range, and battery life.

Once the weather warms up I'll be trying it again. Only way I was able to get that whole chase in with the range, was flying from a vantage point on Garrett Mountain

Very awesome video! I loved this! I've seen drone footage of trains before, but not in a crowded setting like Paterson. Me being from the area makes it even more cool.

There is a reason that great big white line is painted on the street . . . Every vehicle is required to stop prior to even a smidgeon of their car crosses it. And NO that don't include pausing the front tire on top of it

That box car is originally Lehigh Valley which was then purchased by the Susquehanna. It's sitting on what was an old industrial spur which the railroad long abandoned but I believe the business there at the time purchased the boxcar and that's where it's remained ever since

Wow, 3 mile chase in an urban environment. What kind of drone are you using if I may ask? I've used Phantoms and Mavic and can't get that sort of range. Super cool footage.

Thanks man, I used an Air 2S believe it or not. Flew from nearby Garret Mountain to give me the clear line for signal and fanned the drone from my right to my left along the route. Certainly pushed it to its battery limit

@@northjerseyaerialrail9597 Ahh that makes a bit more sense. You found some place high to launch from so your signal always had line of sight to the drone. For some reason I assumed you were at ground level. Regardless though, cool footage. Very smooth in keeping up the the engines.

To appease the comments section, I reccomend changing the title to from "as cars fail to stop behind crossing gates," to "with cars stopped in front of crossing gates." The verb tense matters here. If you showed cars driving and stopping then the title would match the video. But the way you cut the video together shows cars already stopped, not in the process of stopping.

Agreed and appreciate the feedback, but a van drives around the closed gates ahead of the train at around the 1:40 mark. I'm sure most negative comments are people who didn't pay attention or watch till the end

Where I live in mid TN we don't have gates but we really should, drivers will zip across at literally the last second before the train passes. Most of the trains are slow and I think people don't want to wait so they take that chance. Someday a train is going to be going at a faster clip and we'll have an incident.

Certainly a dangerous game to play unnecessarily. The driver of the white van at the end of the video was exceptionally stupid by going around the gates with the building blocking his view even

Is that originally a CNJ line from back in the day through Patterson or is that another fallen flag? They're about the 10-11 Sec Mark is that interstate 80?

Yes that is Route 80 in the beginning and no. This rail line was originally the New Jersey, Hudson & Delaware Railroad (NJH&D) then the New Jersey Western which layer became the New Jersey Midland Railway after connection was made with New York and Oswego Midland Railroad (NY&OM)

From 1:07, you can see two vehicles on the wrong side of the boom gate. Engineer sounds horn in one long blast when he gets close. Fortunately, there appears to be no collision. (phew)

Watch very carefully at the 1:40 Jimmy When the train is heading that Crossing there's a crossing right up the road watch the way the white SUV goes around the gates. Notice he doesn't cross the tracks in the straight manner he crosses in a weaving manner

1:10 at Madison Ave two vehicles are in between the gate and the actual tracks cutting it close for clearance, and 1:40 a van drives around the gate and goes through the crossing at 4th Ave

Ahh, gotcha, I saw the ones on the wrong side of the gate, I was looking for actual moving vehicles. I did see the van at the crossing at the next block.

Yeah that last grade crossing in the city before the river was the one with the van driving around the gates ahead of the train coming

Cool drone video, but I do have to note that if you followed the train for 3 miles, then I'm guessing you broke a few drone laws doing so. Specifically if you were flying solo from 1 single location, the flying beyond visual line of site rule, or if you were following the train/drone from a vehicle, then the rule prohibiting operating a drone from a moving vehicle. I love trains and drones, so I'd hate to see you get dinged by the FAA.

@@chrisc2683 I seriously doubt you were acting as a visual observer for this flight. But let's assume you were. Care to enlighten other drone pilots and visual observers how you were able to legally complete this flight? That definitely would be useful information.
