A Foreign Perspective I am a South African living in South Africa, I just felt compelled to share my thoughts, about the ongoing conflict/tensions in the USA. I am a small businessman promoting trade between South Africa and our neighbour Botswana. Having worked for the United States Foreign Commercial Services in South Africa and later for the UK Trade and Investment offices in South Africa I get approached by many foreign clients to assist them with business/investment opportunities in South and Southern Africa. Three weeks ago I was invited to join a Zoom Session, where American businesses men and women would be gathering to discuss investment opportunities in my country. I turned down the invitation and when I was asked why I said, this is not the America I knew and respected, I will wait until after the 2020 Elections or once the USA regains its reputation in the world. Having studied in the US and worked for the US Government, I always had a keen interest in what was and is happening there. When Obama ran for the office of President I was interested considering he could, potentially, have become the first black President of the USA. Once it happened I lost interest because it was basically a smooth presidency. From the day I heard Trump was running for President, to now, I have been unhealthily glued to the different US based news agencies. I do not want to say it was a four year roller-coaster ride, which would imply it had some ups and downs, the news cycles of the last four years were more like a 747 passenger airliner in a nose dive from thirty thousand feet. In 2008 there were two hundred and thirty million registered voters and one hundred and thirty million Americans voted, which means one hundred million Americans never voted. In 2016 there were two hundred and fifty million registered voters and one hundred and thirty eight million Americans voted, which means one hundred and twelve million Americans never voted. Not too many South Africans understand the US popular vote vs the electoral votes, a system not practiced in our country. What we do understand is if you do not vote, then it is a vote in the favour of the winner, as your vote could have swayed the vote in a different direction. What we do practice here is: if you did not vote you definitely do not have a say in how good or bad the President is performing. Like the world, we too looked at the US as a leader in technology, music, clothing, to mention a few sectors, we even went as far as modelling our Constitution from some of your, more realistic and relevant, Amendments. What we are seeing today is a country so divided, it appears to be on the brink of civil war. KZfaq is filled with confrontations between white and black, right and wrong, left and right. Not videos of people in disagreement, but images of pure hatred towards each other. When I studied in the US in 1986, at first it was hard for me to understand why Americans took pride in either being a Republican or a Democrat. I felt Americans were all the same, progressive forward thinking people and the two political parties has the same agendas moving the country forward. Today there is such a clear line between the two parties, it is hard to picture the (new) GOP is even in the USA. Their actions are more in line with countries governed by Dictators. I have also learnt, many elections ago, to separate the President from the Presidency, as the Presidency in an institution and the man is fallible like all of us. This is not the case in the US today, as Trump, with all his actions, is supported and worshiped by this (new) GOP. My opinion about Trump I not important as it will not affect the USA, but I feel if Americans are this unhappy, both sides of the political spectrum, they need to go and vote. You cannot be this unhappy and have one hundred million Americans not voting. It is clear the Trump supporter is going to vote for Trump, whether he “kills someone in Fifth Avenue” or not, his base is displaying an unprecedented loyalty, which I am sure the US has never been seen before. So the Biden/ Harris supporter should make it a point and make an effort to go and vote. They need to take a page out of Mildred Madison’s book, the ninety four year old lady whose family members drove her six hundred miles to cast her vote. What I cannot understand is how the US still has undecided voters, if my house is on fire, I am not going to be undecided about pouring water or gasoline on the flames. My hope, for the US, is all Americans (on the voters roll) will have the opportunity to cast their vote and there will be a clear winner at the end of the count averting a potentially bad situation. Despite the closing down of polling stations and the removal of post office sorting machines, which has been an attempt at voter suppression. Like the Trump wall, if you want to get there, you need to go under, over or around the obstacles to cast your vote. Your children and grandchildren will thank you one day.
