A New York University freshman is suing her roommate who allegedly stole over $50,000 of her luxury handbags and jewelry. The lawsuit was filed against 18-year-old Kaitlyn Fung for stealing the belongings from Aurora Agapov, who is the daughter of a mining mogul.

Since there’s limited space, students must share dorms. Otherwise all rich parents would pay extra so that their kid can live by themselves. Often times it’s an obligation. You have to dorm with them to go to school there.

Wealthy or not, if the roommate and her mom stole stuff, the courts must prosecute. Even an entitled person deserves justice. But, maybe no Bulgari jewelry in a dorm room.

Her father, and maybe even her mother, have accumulated enough wealth for their family to be comfortable and for her to enjoy fine items. It’s not her fault her roommate who she formerly labeled as a “good friend” stole from her. The roommate is not a victim and should’ve controlled her urges to commit theft against a close acquaintance.

Amazing how many people here are blaming the victim. That is her ‘normal’. Her criminology studying roommate should not have stolen even one thing from her. People have lost trust in the system and don’t care anymore and espc not about millionaires daughter who can afford to spend more to accumulate what her heart desires. I believe even the judge will hand out community service or a fine and nothing else. Also, the same goes for when companies do theft and have people working tirelessly to dig up gold for pennies while the CEO is paid millions, essentially nobody cares anymore about justice and fairness don’t exist in the world and the system is failing. All that matters is who birthed you and who you know.

Well, many schools REQUIRE freshmen to live on campus. Many also include sophomore year as well. Plus, for many dorm life is a key part of the whole college experience. Poor people get their stuff ripped off in dorms too - they're just too poor to be able to file lawsuits. Colleges become in loco parentis - acting parents while kids are on campus. No one should have to worry about getting anything stolen.

I'm sure she probably wanted or preferred a dorm to herself/solo--but some universities FORCE you to have a roommate (2-to-1 room)...unfortunately. Personally, I'd rather have a dorm room to myself. I think what she/her dad shoulda done was just pay for her to live in an APARTMENT around the corner of the university. Would've solved the problem easily.

Just because a person is rich doesn't mean they should afford their own place to avoid these problems. In the end people shouldn't steal regardless especially if they are just a roommate in the beginning and not a would-be thief in the process. She probably has no idea what modestly even means. For all we know that was probably her most modest style of living compared to how she's lived a majority of her life. Shopping at Target or Walmart to fill her dorm probably never crossed her mind. Also, it's new york and she comes from money, in her free time she's attending fashion shows, partying, wining and dining but she still wants that college experience with a roommate.

It might not have occurred to her that her stuff was hot on the eyes. I went to a fairly cramped uni with a fair lot of rich kids. We all left our belongings to reserve hangout spaces as we went to class, they included. Nothing obvious like cash or jewelry, but pricey bags and hobby gear. I made friends with a neighboring table because they had Dungeons & Dragons full on campaign stuff that I couldn't afford on my allowance. I lived vicariously through watching them play. The worst that ever happened was someone would dump a whole group's belongings in the lost and found and claim their spot.

Depending on an individual’s primary residence’s (i.e., home address or parent’s address) proximity to a college/institution/university they’ll be attending, students may have the option to opt-out of student housing programs. All of the higher education establishments have different requirements/policies on students and their living arrangements while attending their institutions. Like many universities/colleges require freshman (first-year attendees) students to student housing, unless that individual lives in close proximity whichever school they’ll be attending.

My roommate in college "borrowed" tons of my things daily. She never asked, she would just show up in school wearing all my clothes, jackets even my shoes! She returned them, hung them up as though they were her own clothes. As much as I asked her to ask me, she never did. It was insane. I never wanted to get her in trouble since she was really sweet otherwise but the daily "borrowing" of my things without asking was just bizarre.

Looks like NYU requires freshman to live on campus unless they are from NYC or have something like an extenuating circumstance (like a medical condition). But bringing stuff like a ring that costs $20k? That’s just stupid, especially if you have to share a room with someone. It’s not right to steal, but she also has no common sense.

Fung should be sued that's terrible! Even if you're a poor student while your roommate is affluent, doesnt mean it's okay to commit a crime. Wrong is wrong. There's nothing funny about this, Fung made a huge mistake, who's 18 years old will unfortunate have this on her record. Hopefully, lawyers between both parties will be able to come up with a settlement so Fung doesn't have to go to jail.
