A record challenging area of powerful high pressure is crossing NZ for Wednesday and Thursday before sliding off to our south east. Around this high three low pressure zones will form. The first east of the North Island this week, bringing some showers into the east from Gisborne to Wairarapa. This weekend and into next week two more lows form over the Tasman Sea.
This enormous high keeps most rain away (other than the eastern North Island as it slides off the country to our south).
Next week the rain clouds return - also with milder winds.

Hi Phillip, love the detail you provide. Is it possible for your team to formulate a description of how the vagaries of the jet stream affect our weather, some time? I think it would go down well with us weather watchers.

Great explanations of weather phenomena! So is High pressure: Pressure pushing down towards earth, so not much room for winds or clouds to move in? Low Pressure the opposite? Does high Pressure air always move towards low pressure to fill it in?

High pressure = pushes down, stops clouds but loves fog (cloud stuck on the surface of the planet). Low pressure = winds swirl faster and therefor lift up and suck upwards.

High pressure makes freezing mornings and nights due to no cloud insulation. Cloudy is better.

I have a question about the high pressure. Here on the West Coast (South Island) we've had a light overcast all week. The predicted overnight low temperatures from metservice have been way off, the overnight Temps have only been a few degrees lower than the day time highs, so very mild. The cloud seems to be insulating us at night. How does this cloud form when pressures are so high? Is it like some sort of inversion layer?

Warm sea compared to the air above - makes cloud and then trapped by high pressure. That's why this week is several degrees warmer than average in western NZ - it's all about that overnight cloud rather than the daytime sun.

Nope, not really - they often form wherever high pressure is away from them. We see many lows east of NZ, but they don't usually make the news because the two government tax funded forecasters don't go beyond the international date line.
