There’s a challenge… an N gauge shunting puzzle, inside an open O gauge wagon, long wheelbase of course. When you held up the N gauge wagon to the O gauge… a light bulb came on.

Once again you set yourself a new task! And this could end up being very, very interesting! I am intrigued as to what it will look like and how you will manage to find a home for it! 😉👍🥂🍀

Marx guy here, on E-bay I`ve generated quite a O gauge fleet from parts or repair purchases in the last four years. I enjoy restoring and customizing. As can be seen on my sight. Good Show!

Interesting to watch as I dabbled with these things in O maybe 40 years ago. Bought the Alas switcher new from Victors of Pentonville, then a few Lima wagons, a couple of unbuilt 2nd hand 3 Aitch kits and eventually a few Slaters wagons. Converted a Lima shunter then a Rivarossi (Plymouthish) shunter, Lima 4F, Big-Big Hymek all great fun in your mid-teens 🙂 Used to run my stock on a layout built by a friend using handbuilt track with code 100 rail salvaged from his dismantled OO set-up as it was way cheaper doing it that way than buying Streamline; given the price of copperclad sleepers, this is not the route to budget track these days! Will be interested to see how you get on with it all and hope that you have fun in the process 👍

Re couplings for your O stock I'd forget sourcing old couplings and try to work around say gluing OO nem pockets to black plasticard strip of a certain length that has a hole drilled in the other end to fit the screw on your wagon. My reasoning? OO nem pockets and plug in Euro or Bachmann hook/loop couplers are plentiful and affordable. I look forward to following your ramble in O. Best wishes, Dudley

I don't like tension lick couplings for a number of reasons, they are actually quite expensive to buy new, they would double the price of the Wagons. I have just bought 8 identical couplings for £4 inc postage, so much cheaper

The yellow Lederer brau lwb box van would paint up into a useful Interfrigo van as running from Europe to Paddock Wood, Kent in the 1970's. Airfix/ Kitmaster offered this kit in OO.

I always like seeing O gauge layouts and trains. I'd love to get involved with O myself but as you say cost is the biggest barrier and also space because O would be more ideal for the garden than indoors. I've seen kids toy train sets that are roughly the same size as O that go for like £50 for a whole set, so it seems strange how O cannot be produced cheaply.

I've managed to do it cheaply by using old Lima O gauge, but even then you have to be patient as prices vary hugely

Ooh, that was a surprise! I've seen O gauge in exhibitions and always admired them, but felt it was all too large for a home layout. Many of the layouts I saw were of the non operational diorama type and even those were pretty big. I'll watch with interest but don't think it's a gauge I'll be dabbling in any time soon. Nice bit of weathering on the wagons - up to your usual high standards, and glad to see that some knowledgeable people have helped on the coupling issue😀

First of all happy new year guys. Compared to your regular scales this stuff looks massive. You don't see too much 0 scale nowadays, I guess you'll have to be quite patient to obtain the good stuff. Might be a good project for printing too.

Nice review. I have considered stepping up from N to HO. O has the level of detail that I appreciate. However, I have limited space prohibiting a long term layout. A terminus design in O is one that I could consider for shunting fun. And yes, cost for new O scale wagons and locos is not attractive ….. I I only have experience with American style knuckle couplers and use your trick with mounting a $1 (60p) torch on a wooden skewer to uncouple units on my N shunting layouts. Not sure what I would use for O 🤔 Again, interesting video 🎦

Thanks, space will be the remaining issue agreed. I've solved the couplings by using HO euro couplings, the mountings just screw into the existing holes. These couple easily and can be uncoupled with a similar hook.

Right up my street. You can get a clas 33 for under £30 if you shop around. Triangl mark 2 coaches can be upgraded and cost around £20.00

The Atlas WDT is a good choice for O scale. I bought one new back in '81. It's still a good runner. I model US in O scale so I use the Kay Dee couplers. The ones you have may be Joeuf. I looked around a bit but didn't find any exactly like yours.

Well, that is big change from N-scale! I will be interested to see what sort of layout you can come up with. Hope this doesn't distract you too much from N-scale but as long as it's model trains, I will be watching. Cheers and a Happy New Year to you and your family.

Looking forward to seeing how this is progressing, if you have the space 0 gauge is definitely the scale to do now and like you say the cost of locos aren't that much different than new 00 locos now and ive seen quite a few in sales going pretty reasonable lately compared to what they used to be, ive just started a little basic n gauge project with bits ive had for years and 2nd hand bits ive collected from shows and a baseboard i've had sat in the loft since i moved into the house lol so hopefully thatl be a cheap project for me, look forward to the next video. Tom

I was one of those who replied and thought they were maybe HO couplers I had seen before. In my searching about I have come across G scale magnetic couplers (think Hunt couplings but way chunkier) from Malcs Models, They look to be 3D printed with two magnets per end, but they are £32.50 for a pack of 10, ie five wagons - maybe Doug could help there? Not sure if it would fit in with what you have planned, but I have some SM32 "stuff" from PS Models. I chose to run on 32mm/0 gauge track because, while it's not cheap, compared to 45mm it's affordable! It's effectively narrow gauge, but the wagons are short (ideal for shunting), made of laser cut mdf and ply and there are flatbed wagons you could mount whatever you want on. Hope this info is of some use to you. Cheers.

Hi Mike, perhaps you could consider a limited outdoor layout. I'm thinking track mounted on modular boards that could be lifted in and outside for running sessions. Re. Power, I wonder if it would be possible to have a rechargeable battery (lithium?) system in a loco or tender and then use a Bluetooth controller from a smart phone. I believe Hornby produce such a system now. This way the track need not be powered or require perfect connectivity. Perhaps Doug may have some thoughts on it.

I have always wanted to do O gauge, but it is very space demanding except for a small switching layout. I find the size, heft and detail for my tired old eyes to be more appealing, than smaller gauges. O gauge would be ideal for 3D printing. My HO and OO is all packed up going to auction, the family is trying to move back to the UK, so I can buy anything I want there easier and cheaper than here. At the moment I do no railway modelling, because of time (lack of) and the cost here (waaaay too expensive.) I'm keen to see this project though!

I will just say about Lima track, it's not quite the same as the current Peco track as the rails on the Lima stuff is OO gauge and is quite a rough jump from the peco and Lima if you use both track together at some point.

my thouht on the couplings is that they are produced if my memory is not failing me by rcoco for hoe i could be tillig amongst others. to me it looks like it has two screw point either in the loop or the drilled hole. the loop is more likely works as a spring . maerkiln had this type of couplers for decades . you can look on a difrent couple that i have some dealings with. it is marklin 1 that couple is similar to n gauge but is dfrent to size . 🇸🇪🇸🇪🇸🇪🇸🇪👍👍👍👍👍
