Never mind Connery, I wonder what Broccoli, Saltzman and UA thought of Lee and Maxwell? Weren't they in breach of contract? I'm sure they'd have to get permission to do something like their characters, in an advert or whatever. Just imagine Judi Dench and Samantha Bond turning up as M and Moneypenny in Austin Powers, the same year as appearing in Tomorrow Never Dies!

From what I’ve heard, they weren’t happy about it because it made an already angry Connery even angrier, but there wasn’t much they could do. It was a good paying gig and its shooting schedule didn’t conflict with You Only Live Twice. Even Connery begrudgingly apologized and thanked them for helping his brother.
@chrismc410 Жыл бұрын
Not too badly. Saltzman died in 1994. Lee died shortly after Moonraker on 1981, why he wasn't in For Your Eyes Only. Broccoli died in 1996, shortly after GoldenEye, and Maxwell died in 2007. His daughter and stepson has owned EON/Danjaq to this day. I'm told whatever issues they had were long gone, even Sean Connery's long before their respective passings

Ironic that Dawson plays the head of the villain organization because he's the one who plays the unseen Blofeld in FRWL and Thunderball (although he doesn't provide the voice). Sean Connery was reportedly angry with Lee and Maxwell for appearing in this film.

With this great supporting cast and such a fairly decent budget, they should have done a more straightforward Spy Film instead. Nothing against camp per se, but I think Neil Connerys' character should have been an everyman who discovers his hidden talents as the movie goes on, not a Plastic Surgeon/Hypnotist/Master Archer. But still, fun flick.
@imfsresidentotaku96995 ай бұрын
So basically, you think that they “should have done” all because you don’t get spaghetti western/spy films. How does having a “great supporting cast and such a fairly decent cast” dictate that one “should” make “a more straightforward Spy Film”? Those two things have literally nothing to do with each other. Plenty of Italian movies of this era, even ones with star-studded international casts, were anything but straightforward. Likewise, the protagonists of Italian action movies of this time period were anything but “an everyman.” They were insanely skilled action heroes oozing with comic book panache, as Quentin Tarantino refers to it, and these qualities weren’t necessarily camp. Making Neil Connery a Plastic Surgeon/Hypnotist/Master Archer is right on the money. If they did what you suggested, the film would’ve been far less interesting. You actively seek to make movies worse. Not to mention, you say that you have “Nothing against camp per se,” then proceed to contradict yourself in the rest of the sentence. I like to live by the words of a certain TV producer: “Anything campy is good.” And what’s the point of suggesting all these changes if you’re just going to end your comment with “But still, fun flick”? You can’t have your cake and eat it too.

I kind of like the idea of doing this; because it's so tongue-in-cheek that it has to be a comedy. It reminds me of the old days where "spoofs" of famous movies would be done - like when the Basil Rathbone Sherlock Holmes movies were big, studios would do comic-spoofs starring "The Cousin of Sherlock Holmes," - staring someone related to Rathbone if I'm correct.
