I'm not kidding. This video will help anyone replace their ignition actuator (if the pin brakes) or their ignition switch on a Jeep Wrangler TJ/LJ. I show you how all the parts work together so it will be easier to install them.

This is absolutely the best how-to video I have seen. It was clearly done and explained very well. The video was clear, sharp, and excellent quality. I had no trouble making this repair on my Jeep thanks to you! I saved an estimated labor charge of at least $200 and saved money on buying my own parts. I didn't have to pay for towing my vehicle to the shop either. Thank you so very much!

Spot on and ditto; I don’t turn a wrench but due to the video tutorial I accomplished the same and I would estimate labor 400-600 in California.

Thank you a million times CPO. I realize this vids old but was just able to fix the wife's 2002 TJ, same exact break as yours looked identical. Replaced both and now she's up and running. Of course not before a new battery, starter. Alternator and every battery / alt / ground cables then I stumbled onto your video. Oh well its all new now, less to worry about, thanks again !!!

Thanks for the video! My '04 LJ quit me yesterday - luckily in the driveway while I was trying to head out. I did some searching last night on a TJ Forum, to narrow the diagnosis. I then searched KZfaq and found your video. Went to AutoZone and Harbor Freight and back home for a quick install. The tip about the security torx saved me a second trip for supplies. Thanks again.

Tackled this project this morning as I really had doubts I could do this. Was pleasantly surprised to see my busted piece when I took it apart, but knew I wasn’t going to jump for joy until completely done. Much to my surprise, it all went back together thanks to this tremendous video. Thank you. Car has sat for 3 weeks as I piecemealed the parts online I guessed I would need. Guessed correctly. It’s a great day.

THANKS! Our Jeep stopped starting the first day of vacation last week. We pulled it home, researched your videos, and bought the actuator pin and ignition switch today. As soon as we pulled out the actuator pin, it looked exactly like yours - broken in the exact same place. Put it all back together and started like a champ! You saved us a tow to our mechanic and hundreds of dollars. Can’t thank you enough…

My tj was stolen around my birthday this year (parked by my workplace and didn't notice until Sept 28th, bday on th 25th) I did some things to "disable" it somewhat. To and from work I drive the back road to actively search for it. Finally one day to work in the morning I drove on the same back street I had already drive by before. This time as I looked left the colors red, white and blue caught my eyes. There it was! Stars and Bars!!! My Jeep has a soft top but I left the rear soft windows off and instead I secured the American flag to the sports bars. Skipping to the point of this video. Now the key turns to accessory and all dash light work and all however it won't crank over and start. I talked to people and it seems that it has same issue as yours. The same broken piece is most likely th culprit. Thank you for the upload.

Bruh...just had this happen to me today. Started up the TJ and stopped at the gas station 2 miles from my house. Filled up the tank and tried to start it. I had all the same symptoms. Got a ride from a buddy and went to Autozone to get both of those parts. Pulled out the actuator and it wasn't broken. Replaced it anyway since I had it removed. Replaced the ignition switch too, which was probably the culprit. Buttoned everything back up and it cranked right up. Thanks for the great video. ✌

Just replaced mine on my '05 TJ using these excellent instructions. Mine was broken in the cast area just like yours. The only thing you didn't mention was the fact that it would take me about 5 times as long to do mine than it took you. First delay was because after getting home with the parts I wondered why there was 2 sets of instructions in the box with the actuator pin assembly then finding that the key lock end of the plastic pin was already broken off. Another trip across town remedied that. Second delay was finding the small spring that shot off of the brass colored slider when it worked its way out of the slot. I'm glad I google the ignition issue when the key felt loose and found this video before I had to be towed. Thanks so much for making it. Keep up the good work.

Thank you for the video!! My Jeep finally will start!!! Weeks leading up to it not starting my 2003 Jeep Wrangler would occasionally cut out while I was driving causing it to jerk and jump a little. It made a clicking sound when I turned and wouldn’t start the first try, then worked the second turn of the key for a week. Finally, It stopped making a clicking sound and lights on the radio light flickered when it wouldn’t start. I tried replacing the starter, checked the battery and replaced the clutch position sensor after reading post online. I saw your video and ordered a 20 dollar starter switch off of amazon and it fixed the problem! It starts right up and runs better than ever!! Thanks again for the explanation of how everything works. I had to get a screw driver and turn the sensor for everything to line up.

Great!! Made it so much easier, I would add that his advice to replace the ignition switch as well is a step that SHOULD be taken, in my case the switch was bad AND the actuator was bad, I didn’t take the advice and got the switch after I discovered it still wouldn’t start. Spend the extra $20 and you wont have that moment of panic as I did when it didn’t start yet again. Great instructional video.

Had an intermittent airbag light issue, if I wiggled the key around when the jeep was running I could sometimes get it to turn off... so I thought replacing the entire ignition system might fix it. As an aside, I could just pull my key out of the jeep at any point and infact, probably could have started it with a hot dog. Anyhow, following these instructions I fixed both of these problems. Taking my time still probably not an hour worth of work. Just want to say thanks again for putting this out, it was extremely helpful.

LOL. Great video. You didn’t think I wanted to hear someone talk for hours. You simply went thru what I needed to do. Thank you. It wasn’t as simple for me as it was for you. But that’s me. It never works how it’s supposed to. I mean, I had to do what you did. In the order you did it. But it took me 3 hrs to get it to come together. Ignition cylinder would only slide half way out. Took me a long time to line up the ignition cylinder with the actuator and lock back in to place. Took me a while to line up the starter with the actuator. All the in between steps took me a while to make them work. But it all eventually went the way you said it would. But that didn’t solve my problem. 🤯🤯🤯 I turn the key in the morning for the first time. Have to hold it on for 20-30 seconds and it finally starts. Starts fine unless it sits all day. Then same thing. I checked the wiring under dash. Not melted, etc. I replaced the starter relay. Starter and solenoid are new. 🤔🤔🤔

Thanks for this excellent video. I was trying to find out why the HVAC system in my 2004 Wrangler X was dead. Checked the control switch module, resistor pack, blower motor relay and blower motor, and all were OK. Discovered no voltage going to the fuse that feeds the relay coil (and also to the fuses that feed the air bag system - the air bag warning light was on, and backup lights which I discovered weren't working either). From the schematics, the voltage source for all these fuses was through the ignition switch. Watched your video, bought the switch for $15, installed it and everything works great. Was about to take it in to the dealer, so this saved me considerable cash!

IMPORTANT 1997 TJ Differences. This is a great video but there are some differences I found when performing this task on a 1997 TJ (and probably all TJ models that do not have a multi function switch on the left-hand side of the steering column) On my jeep, the turn signal switch just controls turn signals and highbeams. There is no reason to loosen this switch because access to the ignition switch itself is not blocked with it in place. BIG DIFFERENCE is that the lower column shroud cannot be removed until the ignition key cylinder core - including its little “wings” that sit around the keyhead that you twist to turn the key - is first removed. This is done by inserting the key in the ignition and turning to the run position, then there is an access hole in the bottom of the shroud in which you must insert a punch or thin screwdriver in order to push the release tab which will allow the key cylinder to be removed, and that will allow the lower shroud to be removed. You can unscrew the lower shroud to help you aim the screwdriver to push the release tab, but the shroud will not come off unless the lock core has first been removed. Obviously, when reassembling it is not possible to insert the lock core into the mechanism as shown in the video because the lower shroud must be fitted in place before the cylinder core can be inserted through it into its resting place. So this last step has to be done blind with the lower shroud back in place.

Before I start I want to thank you for all the hard work you’ve put into these videos. I love how you explain everything fully. I’m tight on cash and therefore attempting certain repairs myself. I’m mechanically inclined “a bit” I’d say, and ONLY a bit. Your videos really help. I have a 2004 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited 4.0L w/ 64Kmiles. I’m trying to replace actuator & ignition switch. Following your video, I felt this would be fairly easy; however, I’ve already run into an issue. I’m trying to remove the lock cylinder by inserting key, turning to on position and depressing the pin . However when I try to pull the cylinder out it doesn’t budge. Also, I noticed on your video u didn’t have to remove a black plastic rectangular box w/ some form of ring attached that fits over the cylinder. I was able to remove ring/box and depress the small yellow pin but still unable to pull cylinder out. What am I doing wrong. Thank you, Laura H.

turn the key all the way like starting it, push the clip in on the belly of the cylinder, pull out!

Thank you very much for this video! They wanted $62 for the ignition switch at the dealership and the labor would have been way more than that. I ordered it for $10 and an ignition actuator for about $15 and I'll put them in myself. Best of luck to you out there!

Great instructions, originally I replaced the actuator pin. I recommend replacing both actuator pin and switch. In case the switch is broken as I later found out. Now working as new.

X2. My actuator wasn’t sheared off/broken. So it was good I had the ignition switch. I re-used the original actuator and returned the new one. I understand a lot better (quicker) how to get in and replace, if needed.
