I own a pair of 146's and they only work in deep snow - If the snow is right, then they are a lot of fun on rolling terrain. NEVER use them on downhill hardpack or be tempted to practice on pisted snow. The problem is with all this type of equipment (not just OAC) is that you require the deep snow to put them on an edge for changing direction or slowing down. If it's hard snow under foot, then you can't edge them and always have a flat ski. if you don't have lots of deep snow (like Finland), look at the longer and narrower 160 version which should give much more control as it edges better over a wider range of snow conditions.

I bought them a week ago and try them on a forest train in the Swiss alps. A lot of hard snow. I confirm all that you just said, particularly that it’s impossible to put them on the edges. I want to try them again with harder (mountaineering) boots than the recommended.

A lot more snow now, been snowing a lot the last few days and none of it will melt until April. Pretty decent skis, though strangely better for snowshoeing than skiing. Thank you very much for watching Laylia.

That is my preferred method of stopping too. The Fins call this style of skiing sweedish cross🤣. Everything bad has to be either Sweedish or Russian in Finland. Norway gets off very lightly.

@@KuukkeliBushcraft there are definitely places here that you can't go without some kind of snowshoe or ski. Unless the snow is frozen very hard. Which used to be more common. Spring here is crazy dangerous I hear you Tim! The snow over the bushes will be hollow underneath and you can take a good fall if you're not careful!

Looks pretty handy! Everyone here uses Randonee skies now it looks like, walk straight up and speed back down again. Expensive stuff tho, as with all types of new ski equipment. I will be looking for some old mountain skies with 75 mm bindings and boots, should be a few for sale come spring. Also been tempted to get some of those finnish universal bindings and stick ‘em on a pair.

I shudder to think how much skis must cost in Norway😂. The price of a beer in Tromso makes me want to cry. The border closed yesterday and we have had a bunch of Norse raiders emptying our supermarket while they can still get cheap meat and alcohol. These bindings seem really good. Nice and easy to use and you can wear most boots with them. So long as the sole is not too stiff.

I have a pair on order and looking forward to use them. I never ski before and was hoping this OAC Kar147 will help me learn to ski. Or do you think I should just get a real cross country ski setup to learn skiing ?
@KuukkeliBushcraft
@KuukkeliBushcraft 2 жыл бұрын
I think the OACs will be great for learning. I also think that you should try to get some kind of instruction from someone and that you should if you get the opportunity try some other skis. It is a little too easy just to walk with the skin based. It is good to learn to glide. Where the skin based exell is off track where it is not possible to glide anyway. Hope this helps and thank you very much for watching my video.

@KuukkeliBushcraft
@KuukkeliBushcraft 3 жыл бұрын
What with that speed demon 😂. We do ski with the dogs but you run the risk of injuring the dog if you have to stop suddenly. I am not a great skier and Uni is the strongest and fastest out of our females. I am also very cautious when it comes to anything that may injure the dogs. With these skis however being so short it might be something I am willing to try. Glad you enjoyed the video Scott, thank you very much for watching.

@alexandergutfeldt1144 3 жыл бұрын
Do they make such short/wide skis without the fixed skins or with a removable option? In mountain terain (Swiss Alps), that would make going down hill a bit easier. Or am I wrong assuming that?
@KuukkeliBushcraft
@KuukkeliBushcraft 3 жыл бұрын
No I belive your right, I think Arctixsport make something similar without the skins. The skins do help a lot for the up hills though. Expecially when you don't have much space. I generally use a old model of Salomon back country skis (again borrowed from work). X adventure parabolic skis. They don't make them anymore but they are really short and excellent on hills but nowhere near as good as the OACs on deep soft snow. They have been on a couple of my videos ("changing my snowshoes for skis" was one. Thanks for watching again Alexander. Hope you are well.

Man how much snow do you guys have there now mate!? Man those are some cool looking skis, I dig the raven logo!! Things look heavy duty and well built. Am I hearing dogs howling in the background? @KuukkeliBushcraft
@KuukkeliBushcraft 3 жыл бұрын
Yes those are our boys and girls making a racket in the background. I often play howling recordings and puppy noises to the dogs because I find their reactions fascinating and sometimes hilarious. I got the Idea from when I lived in Spain. I lived on site and we had two colossal mastiff guard dogs. One of wich quickly became my best mate. He was asleep outside my door when I was watching a video about wolves. The wolves started howling, I thought he was going to rip the door of the hinges. He went crazy (Spanish mastiffs were bred to protect against wolves). I don't have my own snowmobile, if I did I would use it a lot, I prefer skiing but you can get to some really cool remote locations very quickly with a snowmobile. We do use them at work quite a lot. I only take one home when I am taking firewood back with me. As we use them as backup when sledding and for opening the tracks they are needed daily at the farm so I can't really just borrow one. You should try Beasly with some doggy noises, it can be fun. The snow is about knee deep now and we have had less snow than normal this year. It's just not warm enough for any of it to melt until April so it just builds up. Have known it to snow in August here.

@@KuukkeliBushcraft Knee deep is a lot of snow compared to the bare ground here all winter mate Lol! My neighbors growing up had mastiff dogs and they were massive, they were ok with me and my sisters cause they knew us but were really good guard dogs for the family that owned them, they bond hard with their family!! I think I remember you telling me that story once, I think LOL! Have a great week mate!! Oh and I figured you didn't use the snowmobile because of fuel reasons and cost, no clue how good they are regarding that?

Really quite a nice temperature here at the moment. Cold enough that all of the wet stays frozen but not so cold that you have to wear so much clothes that you can't move. The good thing about cold is you put more clothes on and it's OK. If it's too hot, there is not so much you can do about it. Really looking forward to seeing some sunshine though. Sun and snow is a great combination (until everything starts to get slushy). Thanks for watching Tony mate. Hope all is well, and that you have air conditioning.

They are pretty expensive, skis aren't cheap anyway here in Finland. I guess one of the things you are paying for is the incorporated skins in the base but also the fancy bindings. As for the traditional Siberian skis I would love to give those a try and even to have a go at making some one day. The modern version does seem to be a lot more readily available though. Thank you very much for watching. I wish you a very happy Christmas.
