In this episode in our series of bonsai techniques we will be covering the basics spring maintenance of oaks with branch trimming. The main purpose of this initial trimming is to maintain its silhouette and to slow down or redistribute the tree's energy to other location. Spaghum moss is the secret to all bonsai. Almost a 100% success rate in all my repots this yr alone, and i put the spaghum moss around all the root balls. Note: this was my 1st yr of applying the moss. Glad i did. And a subscriber to Herons Bonsai in the UK. Peter always mentions the benifits of spaghum moss. Zone: 6

Great video. I wonder when Michael talks about adding organic feed is he adding compost or something like a seaweed fertilizer

Michael likes using osmocote as it is an easy option and it does not depend on temperature for absorption or need to be broken down.

In SoCal, most landscaping nurseries will have them as shade trees. Unless you want movement you will probably have to grow your own seedlings as they stiffen up pretty quickly in life. I’ve seen plenty of mature trees with acorns in many local parks

What osmocote number do you use. What does organic fertilizer mean.

Don’t remember off the top. 15-15-15 is something you will be aiming for. Organic fertilizer comes from plant or animal byproducts : decomposed plants, animal parts, animal waste. Chemical fertilizers are usually inorganic and are synthetic people made. There are advantages and disadvantages to use either. Rule of thumb fertilize is better than none.

How often do you use the osmocote.

Michael fertilizer pretty heavy on a constant bases. If I remember correctly every 3-4months with osomote
