He was one of my favorite singers of all time. Saw him live twice in New York when this album was out. You could cut the atmosphere with a knife. The energy was so electric. It was surreal. what an honor to witness him twice in his prime. And I stared my first "man child" in the eye, has got to be one of the most deepest lines in any song he ever recorded...

first heard this when my bro brought it home on break from Berklee, double album set, recorded live in Germany. Wow! blew my mind, changed my mind, made up my mind about possibilities. went out and preached this stuff on the boom box. it was a great era when guys would no sooner finish digesting a spat of outlaws, "green grass 'n high tides forever" then they'd be serving up a course of Al's "we got by" or "you don't see me". oft miss the old party days and wide open music flavored ways.

A friend gave me the album on cassette (it apparently wasn't at *all* what he expected when he bought it). It floored me then, and it still does. Jarreau's way of blending straight vocals, vocalese & scat, his ability to phrase like a front line soloist, his astonishing range of timbres and musical ideas, plus the unusually hip settings for a singer, were like nothing I'd heard before. Finally being able to watch these performances adds yet another dimension, an emotional depth of field. And this version of We Got By, in particular, is just breathtaking in that regard. It's a compelling musical, and social, and personal/emotional history all wrapped up in one hard-won, but ultimately triumphant package. Wow.
