The most surprising thing I've learnt from this is that Noel's electric rhythm plays a G for the second chord in the verse and chorus, since I've spent years watching him play a c/b live.

Another great video! An interesting thing about the electric guitar track is that it was played on a Fender Stratocaster that belonged to Johnny Marr on a 1963 VOX AC30 that was the house amp for The Cavern Club that Noel bought off one of The Hollies. I always thought it was played on a Gibson or Epiphone. I never knew about the e-bow, hand claps or the egg previously. I wonder if there was ever a vocal take with Liam recorded? For those of you that are unaware there's this clip of Liam singing Step Out from 1995 that was never released. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ndV0rKZ-2tm6Z3k.html

I've just listened to a SACD mix of Don't Look Back in Anger. My thoughts re the vocals: The first pre-chorus is Noel x2 The first chorus is Noel x2 The second pre-chorus is Noel x2 The 'Cos you ain't ever gonna burn my heart out' line at 2:29 is Noel x3 The second chorus is Noel x2 The third chorus is several voices and sounds deeper and richer than just Noel. However, there is a slight delay when they sing 'away' at 4:18 and these 2 voices both sound like Noel.

@JamesHargreavesGuitar
@JamesHargreavesGuitar 3 жыл бұрын
Actually they recorded it at 440, but Owen Morris sped it up using 'varispeed' when he thought the speed of a song wasn't exciting enough. He did it to Live Forever too, which is why you always end up feeling like you have an out-of-tune guitar when you try and jam along with the record! Morris was a genius sound engineer, and can claim alot of credit for Oasis' breakthrough and success - but blimey he made life difficult for guitar players, burying guitar lines in the mix and speeding up songs by around half a fret!!

@JamesHargreavesGuitar
@JamesHargreavesGuitar 3 жыл бұрын
yes I noticed that, but I wasn't sure if they had left the guide tracks in, or rerecorded it properly? In my experience working in studios, the guide track is usually a quick and simple affair, often just recorded plugged straight into the desk - a standard of recording quality that would never make it onto a professional recording only made to mark the locations within the song. The acoustic track that made it into the mix sounds like it was recorded properly with a decent mic to me at least. So you may be right, I would definitely be interested to know if this was ever established definitively

anyone know what desk was used at Rockfield at the time and whether it was to tape only or whether some of it was protooled (sound tool) ?

Owen Morris was using Cubase at the time definitely (Oasis Podcast interview episode 57)

Probably because when they play it live they use real strings instead of the e-bow, keyboard, etc...

Correct. Liam’s tambourine playing wasn’t surgical, it was biblical. Live forever

but do you know that "claps" are not made with hands actually, right??
@JamesHargreavesGuitar
@JamesHargreavesGuitar 3 жыл бұрын
I know it could be a sample put in there by Owen Morris, but I have also seen photos of Oasis from other future album sessions gathered around 1 mic recording hand-claps together the old-fashioned way... so I thought it was probably organic handclaps rather than digital
@cutekanjii

It's from an instrument called the accoutrenom but more commonly known as "the hand clapper". It's like a shorter version of one of those things they use to pick things up with (usualy litter, needles & things u don't want to touch) Where u press the lever on the handle to opperate the grasping claw . But it's not grasper at the end of it. It is 2 hand like shaped objects that come together to make a clapping sound. U can also place little glove like things made from different materials of various thicknesses over them to give different sounding claps.

@@badgasaurus4211 OK, thanks. I had no idea these songs had higher notes. And to be fair, he kinda always struggled with Some Might Say from live recordings I've seen (and as Noel has said as much). I'm not saying Liam's a bad singer at all, but maybe DLBIA suits Noel's range more.
