I used to be like that, but after making friends and getting a girlfriend you suddenly don't care what people in public think of you. This is exactly why it's so important to be percieved by others as unimportant. There is a strong correlation between noticing and caring. If people see you as important, they've basically already decided to notice and care about you. In an emotionally mature society with well-boundaried egos, that can be nice, even essential to our well being. But in this society I would never choose to be important, noticed or cared about. Because I would be on chronic trial for whether I can inspire, affirm and excuse every single person's insecurities that I happen to trigger. And I'm far too insecure to accommodate that.
