It would be much better for the US to control them. Canada wouldn't be too bad but it would be horrible if China owned them. America would profit from the lands and has the means to support them. Also, the US can use the land strategically and is better then Canada at incorporating and supporting overseas land.

@@daydreamer226 We don't eat salmon and tuna all day lol. We have fruits and basically any other foods you'll find any other country, it's just more expensive, but still accesible to most people. I know many who are vegan/vegetarians and I live in Greenland

@Julius Therkelsen You're totally right! Greenland has a booming fishing industry and is one of the few countries that has a sustainable fishery. It's a shame that much of the fish is exported to the EU without the Greenlandic people getting the full economic potential. I definitely think an investment in fish processing plans in Greenland would help keep some of that money in Greenland. I never said I was in favor of mining in kuannersuit. In fact, I am adamantly opposed to it. Uranium mining is dangerous and could leave Greenland with an environmental catastrophe and little economic gain. The only mining that I think Greenland should do in the near future is a socialized/government operated sand and gravel mining. That way all the money stays in Greenland and there is no need for explosives or dangerous chemicals. We need people like you in Greenland fighting for environmental protection. I think Greenland is on it's way towards independence and I'm excited to see them get more sovereignty!

I'm an american that wants to visit greenland. I would rather pay higher rates to go stay there than them have to resort to mining. Preserve those resources as long as possible.

but why want independance? You get to be part of the EU , and is danmark jurting you or something? Greenlan 's population is not big enough to sustain and employ the people needed to exploit the ressources, you'd have to resort to massive immigration , you'd be colonisez by China or the US , you'd have no choice.

"Rare Earth Metals" are found everywhere and like all else, we buy them from whoever makes them cheapest. USA has gigantic 'strategic stockpiles' of already-produced vital materials and can fairly quickly exploit domestic unmined reserves if/when needed. Mining and refining metals is not know to be a 'green industry' so stop denigrating China... it is like biting the hand that feeds you.

Rare earth elements really aren't so rare. That's just a name. These elements are usually mined as a byproduct of mining more valuable elements like gold and silver. Oops we got some technetium in there, what should we do? Just stick it off to the side. Someone might use it eventually. And because nobody actually mines them, they become "rare". China went after them specifically, and for a hot minute they had a monopoly on them. Then they got greedy and tried to put hotels on Boardwalk and Park Place. This didn't go over so good. Now other countries have reopened some of their mines, just to keep the supply chain moving, even if they do so at a loss. We can't allow China to have a monopoly over anything ever again. I'm not worried about our supply of these elements. Supply and Demand. As the demand goes up, the supply will go up. It's that simple. If Lithium becomes super valuable with all these electric cars, people will mine it intentionally, and there will be more of it. Just like any other mined resource.

And extracting rare earth elements is extremely polluting. The amount of waste is immense, and it is not only radioactive - it is extremely toxic too

(china, chernobyl, japan....) we should honestly just spend the initial funding to start making mining drones for space while we can, it will eventually get cheap enough that they just build more drones in space from what they mine, but its that initial cost no one wants to start off...

Even with a 200 mile sea zone, ships can easily avoid it from the east and or north. In the west, going through Canada might be preferred.

Yes, rare earth elements aren´t actually that rare and are more common then gold for example. However they rarely exist in concentrated deposits and thus are more expansive.

Yeah....I'm sure venture capitalists are lining up to invest in Afghanistan. I'm sure the Chinese Communists wouldn't mind. As long as they're allowed to station an army division around their mine. And the law is written so that their troops are not subject to Afghanistan law. And there is a 25 kilometre no-go zone around the mine for Afghan civilians.

What Afghanistan doesn't have and Greenland does, is stability, and safety. Plus direct access to the oceans.

That Danish Colonialism is destined to fail, Greenland will rule itself eventually (or with more freedom at least). Denmark can keep its young soldiers alive, that's enough.

Geopolitical influence immensely beyond what could be expected, leverage in international politics, and an extremely good relationship with the US. EU should wake up! Greenland is a geopolitical goldmine!

What Denmark gets is that Greenland doesn't fall into the wrong hands or move away from NATO influence. For the same reasons Denmarks geopolitical importance is boosted. Also there are sentimental bonds that Danes have built up over centuries. And then there is the question of whether one can just dump a part of ones territory and declare it independent without the consent of the inhabitants.
