I just love the "it's not going to make anyone fall in love with you" comment about the really loud bright reed.

“This one might just be just right, maybe tomorrow, it isn’t now.” Sums up my experience with reeds quite well.

It's so true. One of my reeds acts differently every day. It might thinner tone one day. The next day it would have a broader sound.

It's such a joy to make an oboe reed that I love playing. Oboe reeds are like people, no two exactly alike, each with their own personality & tone of voice. I once made one that I loved so much, I played it for two years until the oboist next to me bumped into me moving his chair, chipping the reed. Sigh. Deeeeeeeeep sigh, lol. It's crazy for a reed to last that long. It was my bestie:)

I love how every oboist has the same way of organizing their reed case. You have the works in progress, the almost dones, the used to be perfect reeds you refuse to throw, and the performance ready good reeds, always all the way on the right.

I love the sound of the oboe, but after watching a few videos of people preparing the reeds, I've decided that my woodwind journey is going to start with the clarinet.

I believe Mr. Woodhams reed samples are profiled in the book “oboe reed styles”. An amazing book required for any oboists , whether they make their own reeds or not. An amazing thesis and comparison on reed styles of US and international Oboist’s.

I love the fact that being an oboist, you can hear the difference in the different reeds he uses! They all sound good, but you can hear which one is the best. Good ears, we oboists have.
@Jevon-pc1nq9 жыл бұрын
You don't necessarily have to be an oboist to tell the difference. Playing reed instruments in general kind of gives you an idea. I play clarinet myself.
@Jevon-pc1nq9 жыл бұрын
Of course, oboes are very distinct instruments, and I wouldn't dare say playing a reed instrument gives me a perfect idea of what sounds good and what doesn't on Oboe.

I hate it. I'm really bad when it comes to making reeds, so I buy them. Although I get the same brand reed at my local music store every time, the reed always feels different each time I get a new one. Sometimes it's too soft, despite the fact that the brand of the reed I picked up was the hardest. It pisses me off so much, I wish the reed wasn't so fragile. I sometimes get one that has some minor cracks which really makes the experience different when I'm playing it.

O_O NOOO NO NO NO NO NO. NEVER BUY YOUR REEDS. THEY ARE MADE IN AN INDUSTRIAL SCALE SO THEY DON'T PUT ANY THOUGHT INTO MAKING THEM. THEY ARE BARELY EVEN TUNED AND SOUND LIKE ZOURNADES
@chuckdardenne10715 жыл бұрын
Ha Even makes the "bad" one sound great. But I agree with Jordan Farmer I can hear the difference in the reeds. The one he liked had a "soft" quality to it. And of course he sounds beautiful.

If you are a mere mortal ( i'm kidding of course ), sometimes you can't tell tha difference but if you play the oboe for more than half a year... boy do they sound different

What's that lick from he plays to try out his reeds?
@BeanoBeans555 жыл бұрын
I think it’s a mix of things that he uses to test high and low notes, but the start sounds like the bacchinale from Samson and Delilah

And a Mozart ending chord of the Quartet In F. F, A, C, and high F. That high F needs to speak clearly with a delicate tone(you saw his smile). Besides… The first and last notes are always the most important. :-) Quality cane properly aged and prepared make a huge difference in consistency for desired playing quality in your reeds.

Much like a great pianist can make any piano sound good we must be able to make any oboe reed sound good when that is the last one we choose to use.
@Jwellsuhhuh Жыл бұрын
Yes THANK YOU tbh sometimes I wonder if professional reed woodwind players are just wasting time being so fastidious with reeds. Just freaking practice more and you’ll be able to better adjust your embouchure to compensate for reed characteristics
@nomorebushz Жыл бұрын
@@Jwellsuhhuh yes, but after more than 50 years I make more refined reeds now before the edge of collapsing to ruin. Slowly refining over days, balancing and dusting surfaces then reeds flexes and shimmers and upper register pops out and low notes resonate and articulate at pp... the reed resonates from within the body from the reed, then through the horn ... Time spent balancing the reed so we can sing expressively with ease ... That's the trick to the art of oboe playing. I still love my AK Loree that I got from John Ellis.
