Always appreciate your videos. I have a question for you related to airbag suspension. I have a 1992 Chevy. Will a 5 gallon air tank and two compressors be enough? Would you recommend 1/4, 3/8, or 1/2 inch lines? Thank you.

Thank you for watching. I appreciate all of my viewers as well. As far as your question goes, the answer is yes, a 5 gallon air tank would be and two compressors would be plenty sufficient for an air ride system. as far as the lines go, it really depends on which size valves or which air valve manifold you plan on using and what your goal is with the system. Do you want it to just cruise and be able to lay out, or are you wanting a faster setup that you can hit switches and entertain people with. Obviously the bigger the diameter line, the less restriction in the air flow, hence the setup will function quicker, but it ultimately depends on how the system is plumbed and the valves that you use that determines how fast or slow the air ride system functions. I typically use 1/2 lines in most of my setups. The blazer was all 1/2”…. My c10 though was 1/2” lines to the front bags and 3/8” to the rear bags. My old ranger had big 3/4” id lines along with 1/2” id lines and I could nearly bounce it if I removed the shocks. That truck had a very uniquely plumbed setup to where I could clown switches in a car cruise and entertain people and myself with. Here’s a few base “rules” I guess you could say about air ride…. The bigger the air tank… the more volume it holds so the more “play time” you will get from the system. But the trade off with that is, it takes the compressors longer to fill the larger tank. The closer your valves are to the bags, the quicker the bags will inflate because the air has to travel less distance and less restricted by the air line.. If you plan on using one of those airlift p3 manifolds or accuair type setup, those manifold style block setups are typically restrictive by nature and located near the tank. So by running bigger lines from the manifold block to the bags, it’s ultimately more volume that is being used by the setup to lift the vehicle so you would lose tank pressure slightly quicker but it would likely allow for the vehicle to “drop quicker” when the dump valves is opened and the air is returning through the line and to the manifold block and out the dump valve. Those manifold style setups are nice but are limited by how they can be plumbed and more for the cruise low and lay out when we get there cars… the people that are in traffic hitting side to side and bouncing and making all the noise when they drop and are considered a “fast bag” setup are for the most part using individual valves and plumbed for a non restrictive, fast and smooth flowing system… One could think of the air in the system as a fluid like water… the less restrictive and smoother flowing will result in a faster system… I hope that I answered your question.

@@siTTinLo Hey brother. I really appreciate you taking the time to write such a thorough review. You answered questions I didn’t even know I had!!!!! i watched your whole video series on the old red truck and loved it. I know it took you a lot of time and effort to make it. Im in a pickle and dont know what to do. I have a 1992 gmc 1500 on airbags but I didn’t do or set up the system. It was done in 2006 and now it has all sorts of problems. Im not sure if the relays are bad or solenoids but it has 1/2 in plumbing all the way around and 2 5 gallon tanks and 2 compressors. One compressor wont kick on and when I fill the tanks in 24hours they are empty. I know nothing about this stuff so its been frustrating. I’ve had the truck for a year and only driven it 3x and its a beautiful truck. Had it on jackstands for 9 months. Trying to figure out what system I should use or if I should try and salvage the old system. I was looking at a manifold system by slam specialties as I heard good things but Im always open to new ideas. Appreciate your time and effort again. Take car.

@@JeLifeCoach that is exactly how I learned and figured out everything that I know about air suspension was by fixing that ranger when I bought it over 20 years ago. It was already done and hacked together completely wrong done very poorly and would barely function, but I was naive and didn’t realize what a POS it was because it looked sweet when it was all hammered out on the ground…this was also when low rider air ride suspension was in its infancy and there was virtually no information about airride or specific products available and we were using electric propane solenoid valves from fork lifts and stuff or manual valves. I guess to further elaborate on my previous reply,, there is absolutely nothing wrong with the “manifold type” setups like the airlift or the slam specialties. They are awesome for the cruisers and the fact that all of the valves are located on one common block, it greatly simplifies plumbing and potential for leaks in the system. The people running the individual valves are typically more experienced but have to worry about all of the extra Tee fittings and union fittings and stuff in order to plumb the system which every connection is a potential place for an air leak. Also, it is not super uncommon to come out to an empty air tank, especially if the compressors are really old and worn out. Sometimes when the compressors wear out, they can allow air to back feed through the head and out. Depending on the brand of compressors they are, some of them will have a build in “check valve” in the line that connects to the tank and a check valve is basically a one way valve that only allows air to flow through one direction… but sometimes those can fail with age as well and allow air to leak out…. Then there is also all of your other connections that could possibly be a cause of a leak…. The best way to check for leaks is to air up the system and the go around wit a spray bottle full of soapy water and spray all of the connections. If there is leaks, you will see bubbles. Anywhere you find bubbles, take note of where, then de pressurize the system and then unthread and redo the connection using your choice of Thread tape or thread locker and test again. You can try to re use what you already have if all of the components still work. But if you decide to just start over, I wouldn’t be hesitant to try the slam specialties setup. I have had good experience using their bags and when I had an issue with one of their bags a number of years ago, their customer service was excellent at the time. I made a video a long time ago before I sold my ranger talking about the basics of air suspension. There is some good basic understanding to be picked up from that video alone, and the fact that you said that you watched the whole c10 series is great because there is a Lot of little tips and tricks in some of those videos that nobody would ever know unless they watched those videos. Especially the video where I discussed the different types and differences of air lines and fittings and routing your lines, so it sounds like you’re already ahead of the learning curve. Just don’t let it frustrate or overwhelm you. We all have to start somewhere. Like I said, I was you at one point. Had a sexy looking truck that didn’t work worth a crap and would break on a weekly basis, but the more I tinkered and learned, the better I got at this stuff and fixed and improved everything. Trial and error is the best teacher and I have already learned the hard way so they you guys don’t necessarily have to.

@@siTTinLo Yea man that c10series was dope. My wife was like “what are you watching” and I told her “I don’t know how I found it, but its dope. This dude is chill.” So she would lay in bed with me at night and we would watch it. She knows how frustrating it has been for me. This was my dream truck and we bought it for 18k and Ive already had to dump another 6k into it and haven’t even fixed the suspension yet. Im battling do I pay someone to do it or do I do it and F it up? Honestly man mechanical stuff is not my forte. Im always afraid of breaking something. Im located in Dallas and I cant believe how few shops do airbags. Ive called and called around. Most places want to charge me 6500 for a new system or 1200 to diagnose and fix the compressor/tank issue. Im not sure if that’s good or not considering my truck has already been c notched and everything. I appreciate your videos man and how humble you are and thanks for the encouragement. I dont understand KZfaq algorithms but you should have more subscribers. You’re videos are well done and show the work as it needs to be done and that’s invaluable. So many things today are cinematized, and that’s also dope, but sometimes we just need to know when something is going to suck!!! What did you ever do with the c10? You can see my truck and the plumbing of it in Vimeo if you enter my name. I took a few videos the other day just to document.

@@JeLifeCoach it sounds like I need to move to Texas if they’re charging that kind of money… lol… unfortunately I am up in Mi so there’s not much I can really do. Im not from TX but I know that there is a shop that is pretty well known called NFamus Suspension and they specialize in air suspension. If you are having difficulty and just want it done and want to know that it was done correctly, you might want to reach out to them and see if they can help you out. Or next time you’re at a car show, talk to some of the airride truck guys and ask them if they or where/who did their work. Maybe one of them will be cool and help you out. As far as my c10 goes… unfortunately I sold it in 2020 when the world went to shit. My initial plan was to sell it and find another, nicer one and repeat the process however it seems like the day that I sold my truck, the very next day the prices tripled and now it seems like you can’t even touch a clapped out long bed for under $15k which is absurd.
