Yeah, it was so weirdly placed; across the water that looked like it went on forever. Back in the day I remember somebody taking me there. I thought it was super cool. I used to run an emulated server and I turned it into the starting zone for Vah Shir, since I hated the Luclin expansion and didn’t want it on my server, but still wanted to include the Vah Shir. I added an instanced version of the original so it could still be accessed. I even added a little raft that took you there and made a backstory for them. The first and second levels were very active in classic, and iirc, you could get all the monk set going only that deep. The scary bit was the third floor with a portal out only at the end, so unless you had a wiz or druids with your party the melees weren't getting out. There was always "that guy" in a Dalnir group who got sick of leveling on the second floor and would push to explore the third. If he convinced the rest then something bad would inevitably happen and result in in an exhausting late night corpse recovery, usually done through with the help of other Dalnir groups to cover the CR and make sure everyone had a port out.

It's one of my favorite zones to level my newbies from about 22-30 because of mob density. Though if you aren't well geared, melee and grouped don't go there at 22. After that you can head back to Kaesora for another 8 to 10 levels, again in a group cause the healing spiders are annoying solo but Xalgoz's floor with the undead is awesome. In the early days, a good many zones were there to provide an alternate passage through the maps. Mons Letalis has a secret tunnel allowing passage into The Grey. Another use for what would be obscure maps could be faction. I remember constantly being alert for an easier route to gain dragon faction. I recall our guild playing a considerable amount of time in Crypt of Dalnir, though I haven't the foggiest idea if we did this for a piece of gear or just to camp mobs. The Kunark expansion was the first new continent, and I believe we were still limited to level 50 at that time. I played Dark Elf Necromancer and corpse recovery was in high demand those days.

I've only ever played classic content, though during my last EQ foray I actually went as far as a little bit into Gates of Discord, whereas my EQ experience beforehand had stopped halfway through Luclin. Dalnir was a frequently-visited zone for us, on account of it being a good place to grind during certain levels. And Beholder (aka Gorge of King Xxorb)... well that zone represents my first truly tense moment ever in EQ, as a Barbarian player had invited me to return with him to Halas (coming from Gfay) and part of that trip involves the death bottleneck that is Beholder, where one unavoidably comes into close proximity with things that would one-shot them. You're right about the #1 zone, though. I played Luclin sincerely and I don't think I ever went there.

What would also be interesting is to talk about obscure SECTIONS of zones. There are some. I've come across a few when I revisit an old zone. Back in the day players tended to gather in the most accessible and XP/loot-rich parts of zones, often areas relatively close to the zone-in. Case in point: the northern caves in Dulak's Harbor. I didn't even know about this area "back in the day" and I would have probably avoided it anyway because they're far away, packed with nasty mobs presenting difficult recovery options after a wipeout.

Yes, the inclusion of Dalnir has been a controversial pick since I uploaded. It could have been the time, place, and server I was on at the time that led it to be seldom used. I excluded Ldon zones simply because they are such an oddity in EQ. I know there are some Monster Mission zones that could have easily made the list (some still have not been fully uploaded to allakazams). There could be a case made for a video about seldom used and obscure instanced zones in the future.

Honestly forgot about the old rez zone. It was used for such a short period of time. Might have gotten my bodies there 4 or 5 times. Necro summon became so cheap by this point (relatively, think a coffin was 269pp?) and a96 rez was what 100pp. It was rare to not be able to find both. Outside of the Gorge of King Zorbb was a kicking One for a long time. EE bag was actually end game loot for at least 2 expansions. Was it Omens that brought Tae Ew bags? So 4 expansions? Since Naggy and Vix bags were Lore and maybe Haversacks but think those were an expansion or two in, a 70% redox bag went into one of the 8 slots you had back then if you were end game and for that reason this zone was happening. IE the Evil Eye bag (EE bag for short). It's almost like saying a fbss is a worthless item. When it was king until dragon sash came out (or for the rare few, PoA haste items, but that zone was so fubared that only a handful per server got them). Doesn't make an fbss worthless, just replaced.

And like with a lot of head items. The crown was invisible. It was the thing back then to go around with an uncovered head even though you weren't. Most Luclin head drops were invisible. You really should have included Stonebrunt Mountains on this list. Prior to the Ykesha expansion. You could only get there by going through the warrens. It was great because you could do Yuio's illness and farm the Wakisashi of the Frozen Skies quest over and over. Great way to make money in the Bazaar because it was great twink gear and people would give these to their pets. It was a non lore sword with an awesome for it's time proc. Just got back to EQ a few weeks ago. Decided to re roll completely. Barren Coast is somewhere I did end up going on a whim (everyone and their mothers spends these levels in Veskar it seems). As far as Barren Coast goes...Undead are social, so F that zone lol. It was nice exp from 58-60 at least. Everything died really fast. I love Crypt of Dalnir. It is always on my list of a Kunark leveling tour (when I make Iksars). The last guy sucks though. Chain charm. So painful. So funny. Took him an hour to kill my 3 recently made Iksar. He kept charming the SK, then the Shaman, healing the SK, then my BST. Everyone is charmed and healed up. It took awhile but I managed to train my BST with mobs to get them killed, then did the same with my shaman, my SK sat around for a lot longer. I even got up for a snack. Sick exp otherwise. I remember Shadowrest.... for reasons I am not prepared to disclose at this time....weird that they left it in game. When Luclin was out I spent a good amount of time in Mons Letalis. Think I swung past there on my way to The Grey for an epic 1.0 drop recently. After Kunark, Shadows of Luclin was my next fav. After that PoP. I know everyone says they hated PoP, but it was amazingly fun when I raided. I miss some of these old zones. Always fun to make a new alt and revisit. I think as a GM (now known as a Guide) I just had a high drive to explore every zone I could. See what lore books I could find. NPCs and run into, and the odd random person out in the middle of nowhere.

First off, thanks for making this. Secondly, Luclin was not perfection, far from it. Mons Letalis was a great zone for the 20s. Greyhoppers and the boulder golems were really good exp. It was better than Scarlet Desert with the overtuned trash mobs casting shaman-level DoTs (FAST acting). Fungus Grove was great. AE groups in Acrylia Caverns were too. Key camping sucked, especially when we learned that some parts weren't dropping (by design, because Vex Thal wasn't finished yet). Burrower event was fun as well. THO was hilarious as a wizard (I'm level 1 again!). Most of the zones you mention have reasons for being seldom used. Beholder is only relevant for farming clay from the muddites and I think some quests or tradeskills still require evil eye lenses. Takish-Hiz was killed by the fact that those auras are craftable with low trivials (under 200 iirc). As someone else said, you could make a video of 100 obscure and seldom used zones and you'd still have some left over.

Same sentiment toward Dagnors... it was simply part of the amazing journey to Unrest. Even dull zones (or sections of zones) were important to EQ - especially back then when running was the only means of getting from point A to point B - as they all contributed to the legit feeling of immensity and diverse environments to the world. Wouldn't it be just about every zone since almost no one plays EQ anymore?

No mention of Veksar? Most people don't even know where it is. In my opinion Veksar is the most forgotten zone period.

When I played in 2001, there were only a few of us that ran the place. As a 70 Necro, I remember hitting 1 mil plat from selling items in there. I loved that place!

Sorry to necro an old thread, but is that the one at the bottom of loio? It was added to the game at a later date right?

Not my favourite (that goes to The Buried Sea), but Luclin is a solid expansion, no doubt about it.

Crypt of Naddox, Blackburrow, Plane of Mischief, The Grey, Dragon Necropolis
@ignoblesurfer62813 жыл бұрын
None of these are in any way obscure. Blackburrow was popping in Classic. Crypt was an entry-level raid zone. PoM is one of the most documented zones of its era. The Grey was a travel zone to get to Ssra and had the death mechanic. DN was a very popular six- and twelve-man dungeon, as well as an iconic raid destination.

Dalnir is not a seldom used zone. The exp there is crazy. You can get 15 levels in like a hour. I used to go there all the time and still do to level fast

Isn't ever quest itself obscure and rarely used

Shadows of Luclin was a terrible expansion. Totally hated it.. was very bad to travel and Vel Thal was a very boring raid. Scars of Velious is still the best one overall.
@bluethunder73912 жыл бұрын
The perfection of shadow of luclin?.This expansion was one the worst of this game. Bad to navigate zones, worst and most boring raid zone in Vegas Thal etc.
@fcseven2 жыл бұрын
It holds a sentimental place in my memories.

Dalnir?.. required for so many quests including the completion of Greenmist? Warslik Woods is not obscure at all.. especially on TLP servers. People group for giant camps for early Gem Encrusted Rings before they are removed from the game , forest loops and other giant loot for coin. Also Grachnist is camped bigtime for his earring.. It's Gorge of King Xorbb.. not Orb.. Luclin was your best expansion?.. not judging you but I think you're the first person I have ever heard that from..

Yeah, pronouncing some of these EQ zone names is not my strong suit.
