I thought it would be a nice change of pace to cover some of my favorite role playing games here on the channel, but I didn't want to dip into the more covered spectrum of RPGs. So I put together a list of the more underrated titles. The RPG gems that never got to Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest levels of notoriety, but deserve just as much praise and admiration.
Intro 00:00
Shining Soul 02:42
Suikoden I and II 09:27
Suikoden IV 12:44
Suikoden V 14:30
Suikoden Tactics 14:50
Eiyuden Chronicle 16:12
Emerald Dragon 17:38
Grandia 21:55
Grandia II 23:44
Grandia Extreme 25:08
Grandia III 25:27
Wachenroder 29:11
Legend of Dragoon 33:14
Growlanser Generations 39:05
Growlanser Heritage of War 42:18
Growlanser Wayfarer of Time 43:18
Resonance of Fate 45:19
Ring of Red 50:51

Unfortunately Grandia 1 hd remaster has so many issues with graphics being worse than on saturn as it used inferior PS1 copy of the game, i encountered a bug of game randomly crashing when entering/exiting towns as that is when game changes resolution between town map and world map which can cause a crash as PC games do not like resolution changes in that manner. I still managed to 100% the game with all them issues but I really wished they had not overpromised and under delivered with the HD remaster.

There is a recent PSP Gensō Suikoden: Tsumugareshi Hyakunen no Tok fan translation patch 2012 last in the Suikoden series. Wish Level 5 would buy the rights for Suikoden and remake them all (minus 4 and Tactics) but add construction elements when expanding HQs like woodwork brick laying and so on fixing up the HQ in 3, plastering painting ect

Excited to grab some grub, sit down and watch this! What I will say, in regards to your introduction statement from my personal viewpoint: Even though you've never really talked much about JRPGs since I've been watching, I actually noticed your fondness for the scene with a lot of the "pseudo-references" to popular ones (or at least ones I know of) through fonts, intro inspirations etc. Enough so in fact, to actually check your channel from BEFORE I started watching, to see if you'd ever covered any JRPG type stuff previously, before the Resident Evil and Silent Hill retrospectives! Needless to say, regardless of all of that, to ME at least, as an absolute fan of your content, I could definitely tell you were a JRPG fan, even if it went unspoken on the Survival Horror stuff a lot, so I see this video here is an absolute *WIN*. Again, super excited to grab some monch and watch through all of this tonight! And I wouldn't mind seeing more content on different genres of games you love in the future! Your commentary on any game you cover that I've played/haven't have always been interesting and insightful to me, and even inspired me to go back to older games I used to practically worship as a kid, and pop 'em in for my own "retrospective" take on them, like the entire 3D Legend of Zelda line-up in release order and the Metroid Prime Trilogy! (As well as any of the 2D games I could readily get my hands on!!!) Thanks for the stellar content as always Jared; keep on rocking, - Gen

this is awesome. i originally found your stuff through your awesome silent hill videos but rpgs have always been my favorite. in answer to your question in the first minute of the video, i would absolutely watch videos of your opinions on the greats with millions of videos cause you've got a better understanding then most. keep it up!

ahhh god the memories pouring in from this video I still remember the grind in grandia 2 on the dreamcast collecting the item that boost character movement speed. growlanser and suikoden were random games i found and played to death for no reason but enjoyed them. Probably still one of the biggest JRPG gem will always be Lunar silver star story (complete) and how I'll never forget that Ashley from the boy band O Town was Alex's VA. great video man

Holy crap, Resonance of Fate! I was starting to think that game only existed to me, like the specter of some game developer who died in my house or something. The fact the mountain of tutorials managed to convey how to operate that combat system is a miracle in itself, trying to explain it with words is impossible. I remember rereading the directions over and over again, blinking, wondering if I was in the process of receiving brain damage... but when I'm playing it, it's one of my favorites of all time.

Great video! It's awesome seeing lesser-known SRPGs like Suikoden Tactics get some love (even if I feel a bit led-on by that footage of Feda: Emblem of Justice and Grand Kingdom at the start of the video 😅). Have you played Telepath Tactics: Liberated?

If I remember correctly Bravely Default 1 (don’t remember the others) has separate menu screen music and it’s a music box. I fuckin love it when games do that. Especially if the music is so calm and tranquil. I’ll have to give LoD a shot then because of that, and because the combo’s do look cool as hell. Love the video Jared! I’m a little confused as to why it’s unlisted though?

Loved the video. This is my first video I've seen of yours and this is just fantastic content. You even showed me a RPG I've never heard of. Ring of Red. It's now on my list to hunt for when I'm at Con's or hunting in used video game stores. Ring of Red really reminded me of a cross of Front Mission and Valkyrie Chronicles. Which is an absolute win for me! Question though. I see you hit almost all of the Suikoden series but the 3rd one. Had you not played that one yet?

Thank you for shining a light on these overlooked games! I'm not a big RPG fan but these will still be good for when I'm looking to try something new. As for multiplayer Shining Soul 2, I can testify it's great for casual co-op and decent for long-term; although the difficulty increase is a bit harsh without grinding.
