If you bought SwissTrax, you'll need to eventually cut your tiles to get a perfect fit for your walls. You can cut the tile a number of ways: a carpet tile cutter, table saw, circular saw, band saw, jig saw. Here I show you a few common mistakes you can make by doing them myself & the correct ways of measuring and cutting your tiles.

Just installed this floor in my garage this weekend with my wife’s help. WOW! It looks amazing and I can’t believe the transformation. A tip for others on cutting tiles for edges. All this measuring will make you nuts if you have a lot of cuts. Here is the quick way.- I will explain as best I can. 1- lay tiles from left to right as far as you can go with full size tiles. You will now have a gap that you will need to cut a tile to fill. 2- Place a full size tile, properly oriented , directly on top of the last full size tile you put down. This will be the tile you will cut.They will want to slide on one another, so you may need someone to hold it. 3- position a full size tile on top of the one you want to cut, and slide it back until it hits the wall . ( If you want a gap at the edge, make sure you let the loop side hit the wall. If not use the straight side) 4- You will now have exposed the amount of tile you need to cut on the tile under the one you slid back 5- Draw a line across the tile to cut using the straight edge of the top most tile 6- Cut your tile that you marked. It will fit nearly perfectly. No doing multiple measurements. Very quick Hope this helps. Thanks for your reviews. I bought these because of your videos. One of the best home projects I have ever done.

Ha! Three and a half plus one... that’s exactly the way I measure things. I thought I was the only one!

I agree. Any time I build anything and try to measure in inches, then try to do fractions math in my head.....ugh. And I’m a damn engineer!

WOW that's a nice cutting work bench. I would be using a couple of saw horses and a piece of plywood or old door. But if you can afford a granite countertop to cut on that's way nicer LoL

Measuring and cutting is always a PITA, like you say, mistakes happen to everyone. But being from the UK, it’s metric system all the way for me. So much more logical!

Have you looked into a contour gauge for those weird angles?

Agreed. A 20” one can be had for about 32$ on Amazon. I’d imagine Matt does this enough to find one useful.

Don’t worry Matty, we all go number blind sometimes. I use the metric measures - they’re far simpler.

Matt, you realize that the white-painted flOor base cOuld have been removed and replaced with new base SET ON TOP of the SwissTrax, thereby hiding all irregularities and also allowing for expansion/contraction. Still looks great. Regards...

@marnixsiekmans8259 4 жыл бұрын
Andy Lauria, you could go with installing a membrane over the white painted floor and installing any tile you want over that. The membrane will stop the tiles from cracking and allows for the base to still do its thing.

Nice vid! I can’t wait to do this in my garage but that gaping hole of daylight coming from the bottom of the door scares me! My OCD is needing to plug it

Hi Matt custom cutting and or fitting is always a pain luckily almost always very satisfying in the end. I have a couple of questions I hope you can answer when are you planning to have PCL parts available I picked up the accura 1 about a year ago and I see The new lock on Chuck is much nicer then the one I have much more in line with the quality of the gauge I had a cheap analog gauge with basically the same Chuck and how many tiles are in one box of Swiss tracks as I’d like to order one box to check out before I order a whole floor thanks for all you do it is appreciate john

Two questions. What type of jigsaw blade? Second I live in Florida. How much of a gap do I need to leave along the edges to allow for expansion from the heat?
@ObsessedGarage
@ObsessedGarage 3 жыл бұрын
It depends on how often you have direct sunlight on the tiles. I rarely leave my door open with direct sun on them, so I don't do a gap. I butt it right up to the wall. Any blade will work. The finer the TPI, the better.

Oh Bee Gee mine does. And this winter it has slid slightly because it has shrunk. Probably will need to pull it out in the spring and adjust it.

no thats not good enough, i would have to cut that again. oh no i wouldnt have to, because i wouldnt put this in my garage. stuff falls through it and i would be picking up tiles all the time to clean under them. I know you said you never drop stuff or make a mess, but we all clearly saw you did many times :)
