www.playbill.com/video As she prepared to wrap up her run in "Wicked," Willemijn Verkaik met up with Seth to chat about her background - she is from the Netherlands and has performed the role of Elphaba in three different countries and in three different languages. Seizing the opportunity to create havoc (as per usual), Seth asked her to sing "Defying Gravity." The catch? She'd be required to switch amongst the three languages (and permutations thereof!) according to the cue cards doled out by his assistant.

Her name is spelled wrong in the beginning! And English with the German accent I fell of my chair it was so funny. She actually got the right notes even though she didn't know how to sing the words. Talented definitely! Proud to be Dutch when I see Dutch people doing these things all over the world. I love her!

I loved the way that when Willemijn was in the West End and performed live, she spoke to the audiences with a British accent. Not many international performers would have done that in the UK! :) Such a talented and amazing woman!

I believe that's what they're supposed to do, Cuz a Mexican actor was Simba on the Lion King in Spain and he talked spanish with an European accent (very different from the latin America Spanish)

I figured it was hard because, as her German co-star Lucy said, she speaks German better than some Germans. So they had no reason to switch to English with her...she likely didn't hear their German accent in English that often.

I was actually wondering about this - isn't that line actually "meer" in the Dutch version? Isn't it something along the lines of "Nee niemand die mij pakke kan, geen towenaar, geen vrouw, geen man, nee jullie zien mij hier nooit MEER"? Isn't it the previous line that ends in "neer" - as in "en niemand houd mij ooit noch NEER"? And "meer" means "more" while "neer" means "down"? Not sure if I've got all this right because my understanding of Dutch is far from perfect (my second language is Afrikaans). So I wonder if she just thought very quickly on her feet and translated it because "neer" fitted perfectly there, or if she got confused with the "neer" from the previous line... I'm guessing the former :)

MostlyMe Yep, sounds about right ;) I think she kind of accidentally did it, but it fit so.. But I guess most of the youtube visitors wouldn't have noticed it at all ;)

MostlyMe I think she wanted to sing "is ever gonna bring me DOWN" but when she got the last piece of paper handed over it said dutch, so she quickly translated "down" in to "neer".

I think indeed she just translated the last word 'down' to 'neer' instead of singing 'meer' from the dutch version: ('Nee niemand die mij pakken kan, geen tovenaar, geen vrouw, geen man, nee jullie zien mij hier nooit MEER') I don't think it's on perpose, she was already singing, only had one word to go, and then had to switch from English to Dutch, so she just translated that word. And it happens to seem simular to 'meer' (what it should have been). Anyway, she just did great, I think she had a lot of fun, and so did I watching this. Willemijn is gewoon GEWELDIG!

seen an heard this many times, love it every time! Willemijn is the best. So happy I got to see her preform live twice (Musicals in concert 2014&2015), my only regret is never seeing her play Elphie, when I went to see Wicked in The Netherlands, Renee van Wegbergen played Elphaba. :( Willemijn really is worlds best Elphaba ever!
