The beginning is, as they use doubles to walk across the platform, and the real actors are rushing around backstage, and there is too much noise to sing live. Some productions then have the actors sing live until the final note, but others (Phantom 25, for example) record the entire thing. Also, all of the Phantom's voice-overs from backstage are pre-recorded as well.
