Let's talk about an easy way to get started with Unreal's control rigs and animate directly in Unreal. We don't cover things like the sequencer or how to integrate with animation blueprints: we're just talking about the control rig.

6 months later and there still aren't many tutorials that match this. There are about 3 I can recommend to people you can kind of combine together: -This tutorial. -WoodyDev's fast rigging tutorial as it reallly shows how to make some quick arrays to connect everything up. -And one by Smart Poly involving rigging a T-rex. That said I think this is the best starting point especially as I think 90% of people coming into this want to rig up a human being. For me I just wanted to get some bloody arms for a first person perspective to animate up. I still have issues with my rig but this was a really good solid start. Going to have to figure out whats wrong with my IKs still as they kinda work in reverse... but are still working as I need them to in a way...

It nice step-by-step tutorial, and a lot of good tips in it. You don't need to randomly change the primary and secondary axis, all you need to do is to check your bone axis. If you click on the bone in the skeleton, you see the bone is along one of the X, Y, and Z axis, that's the primary axis, the axis that comes outward, and the pole vector residing in front of it, is the secondary axis. I hope this helps.

Thank you for putting this together. I've been interested in trying control rig out for a bit and had the same trouble as you with finding an explanation of where exactly to start.

I think they're about to start releasing more official tutorials, so those will probably be better than what I'd make.

Very useful tutorial thank you for this. I can't find any updated version of this control rig on KZfaq. After trying a few times, when I create a control for fingers it is create unparent automatically. Any idea?

Hmm. I think there are lots of tutorials about that, it's quite common. I do have a video about how to use montages, if that's how you want to do it.

Does moving the control one up in the hierarchy solve the double-rotation issue? Assuming the control is centered on the base of the bone it's controlling, it should stay in the right spot.

Yes! That's the easiest way to fix it, since it's just a lot of drag and drop. TBH, I don't have any clue why it spawns as a child, it's just The Wrong Thing.

Tutorial is awesome, however I have a little problem. I've tried on a couple of meshes, maybe someone can explain what the problem is. My controls moving my bones, however it doesn't move the mesh (sometimes, neck controller moves mesh neck, however other controls don't move mesh, but moving skeleton separately from the mesh). Maybe can someone help me with this issue? Thanks

This isn't an active video, but I guess the question is whether you have other constraints on your skeleton. It may not be that you can't move it, but rather that it moves back afterwards, before the frame renders.

Blender, but Maya works great. Better than Blender, really, but it's not free. It should be noted that many third party models come pre-rigged so you don't have to worry about that.
