I had a grandmother who had advanced dementia. Thankfully, she wasn't as physically capable as Chris Benoit was, but towards the end of her life, she was becoming increasingly confrontational, belligerent, confused and mentally draining to deal with. If she was as physically capable as him, I fear she may have becoming a similar danger. Gram also had a rough upbringing, which I question if Benoit did as well, hence some of his behavior before a lot of the concussions and the tragic end. She abused my mother to no end when my mom was growing up, similar to Benoit bullying and hazing other wrestlers. In both cases, the dementia/brain damage only compounded those issues to create a living nightmare. What a shame, in the end. What Chris Benoit ultimately did is unforgivable and could have potentially been avoided with enough precautions. In Gram's case, at least she got the release from her suffering 5 years ago, and our family has recovered from it since. Benoit's family may never truly recover, though.

Benoit never mentioned any abuse as a child, but he had been using the flying headbutt for almost a decade before he arrived in the WWE. The ecstasy is that Chris Benoit did something good by doing something horrible. All the negative inside Chris had a positive effect on the mentality in WWE... Those things had been ignored by the WWE for decades until this incident forced them to pay attention to it.

I hear that Benoit did want out of WWE, since he was being offered a massive deal from TNA. Jeff Jarrett bragged about it and how he stole Kurt, he was in talks with Jericho and he was going to steal Benoit. Chris only stayed because Vince offered a massive new contract and made promises (which he didn't keep). Nancy was upset because she wanted Chris off the road. TNA offered that, but WWE didn't, and apparently they fought over it.

@@vriiite I dont wanna judge much and saying that am on Chris's side but have you considered maybe she was a problem and not just Chris. Remember that Chris didnt left his wife because of cheat or stop loving her but because he left to go with Nancy. In reality Chris's ex wife never ever said anything bad about him she even said that she still loves him. Also not to mention Nancy got mad on his parents for not been there for her in need when she had her surgery done and keep in mind she never had a single kid before she gived birth to Daniel and if I may add Chris was her 3rd husband. Does that also raise a question is it really all Chris's foult. Maybe am wrong but netherless I do feel like they were in love but in same time I feel like she was the one who was a trouble one in the relation & she is the one who sounded a bitchy and hard persona. Plus I never ever hurd Chris did something bad to her apart from media stories and her storage where she kept all her private stuff like pics from abuse and other stuff not a single thing was pointing to Chris insted it was all just perv. relationships tipiclly marriage with Kevin Sullivan

@@yamashina96 marriage breakdowns are never one way - of course she would have been a part of whatever problems they were having. She’s not the one who did the killing though, so the blame will always shift towards Chris. And rightfully so - even if she was the biggest bitch in the world, that doesn’t mean she deserved to die for it. It’s a damn shame, he’s still my favourite wrestler. If he’d gotten help with his emotional trauma and lived long enough to die naturally, without taking his family with him, he’d be celebrated to this day instead of being a taboo to even say his name.

I remember being an 8 year old kid and referring to Chris Benoit as "the wrestler that looks like a fridge". He was extremely large (muscle wise) for a guy with short arms and was barely touching 5"11. He grew on me and ended up becoming one of my all time favourite wrestlers, but when the tragedy happened - selfishly, all I could think about was "damn, no more Benoit matches and no hall of fame induction". Nowadays, I'm fully in the camp of "Nah, fuck that guy. Nancy deserves to be in the hall of fame." I can still enjoy watching Chris Benoit matches, purely for nostalgia reasons, but also I can acknowledge that even though the guy was suffering and had issues which I can understand, I can't sympathise with any man who murders his wife and young child. He brutalised Nancy to death, cruelly suffocated his son, but yet he took the time to place a towel around his own neck so he could be more comfortable when he took his own life? Thanks for the memories and all that, but fuck Chris Benoit. RIP Nancy & Daniel.

Also, you said you'd like to see me go through what he went through? --- Plenty of people experience CTE, alcoholism, drug addictions, failing marriages, suffered multiple tragedies, lost best friends and family members, etc - but the majority of those people don't murder their wife and child. There is ZERO excuse/reason to murder your family. He did it, he planned it, and the only thing his brain had to do with it is it was used to plan it out. He kept her drugged up for two days before killing her, and had pleasant conversations with his friends trying to get them to be the ones that found them while he was doing it. @@robertrodriguez787 From what I can ascertain, only one incident lead to a police report being fiiled, and in it he's described as expressing anger through destroying (his own) property, not through physical abuse of any persons. It lead to Nancy taking out a restraining order (understandably intimidated), but that order was later withdrawn when the couple reconciled. As I understand it, this was some years prior and was anomalous, not recurring, whch is why what eventually happened came out of the blue and was deemed uncharacteristic of the man. People are equating a solitary police call-out, some years removed from the crime, as evidence of premeditation for the crime. Which is speculative and doesn't account for the various contradictions in the timeline of events.

The signs I saw way before the tragedy was his stare. There's a difference between acting or being angry stares and cold death stares. I've only seen it once and luckily it wasn't towards me. Chris nearing the end had stares that were like off in the distance, not even really seeing the person in front of him. That's when I knew something was wrong. And going back and rewatching those episodes, its clear as day. He was way off. Those headbutts he took, finding out those were real made question why Vince and other authority figures didn't stop him. Like today, they stop wrestlers from doing certain things so that another Benoit tradgedy doesn't repeat or worse. Daniel Bryan spoke about it which led to him leaving, though they were right in stopping him from harming himself. It shouldn't take an event like this to wake up. Wrestling was rough back then and it shouldn't have been. I feel like Benoit was crying out for help but it fell on deaf ears.

Both Chris Benoit and Eddie Guerrero died from drugs, alcohol and stress of the travel schedule. WWE is a great company but it does a brutal travel plan that all performers have to commit to even if they have injuries. For those who want to make it to WWE and they don’t sign them, they can try AEW and TNA whom both companies have light travel schedules and good pay, if those companies don’t work out, they can always go to Japan, Mexico or even both for a period of time and still make good money.

I remember listening to that episode of Jericho with Nancy's sister. It was heavily promoted. No one can defend what he did that weekend, but we can look back it and try to see the signs that we missed, so something like that doesn't happen again. Steady heads do dumb stuff when they lose control, imagine someone who had the brain of an old man, years of head and brain trauma, unresolved mental issues, and drug use, and you can see things from a different angle. Three people lost to Benoit's demon that weekend. Disregarding Benoit's many issues doesn't help in this subject.

Something about this case always bothered me. I remember reading somewhere that there were empty beer cans found around the living room but there was no alcohol found in either Chris or Nancy’s system. My question is if there was no alcohol in either Chris or Nancy’s system who was drinking the beer during that time? Why wasn’t that looked into? What made Chris feel like he had to switch cars and take different routes to and from his house? Did Nancy also feel like she was feeling watched? Did Nancy talk to any of her friends and family about it?

To be fair, these things are only 'obvious' because of what we know now. When you're in the moment, in the present i think you'd react or respond differently than you would later on down the road. Chris may have been 'odd' or 'off' but you can easily push that to the side as "Oh well that was Chris just being Chris." Some people are just a little bit strange you know? But knowing what we know now its terrifying to think about all the things that was going on inside of him. Also, i remember hearing that even if Chris didn't do what he did. He would have still died. His heart was in horrific condition. So combine that with his brain being incredibly damaged... Game over. Chris was done regardless. You know i remember being woken up early in the morning by mom and brother and seeing on the news that Chris and his family was dead. It was shocking. So incredibly hard to believe, especially since we just saw him face Elijah Burke on ECW earlier that week. Crazy. I'm just glad that WWE and the wrestling world in general is in a much better place.

Good video. I was sceptical at first. I think it is that he had some kind of inferiority because he was bullied before and maybe autism. That's why he needed this self made values in order to feel better and to classify everything. His absolutely insane drive, self punishment and tunnel vision speaks for that. What happened to his brain and his behavior, for me, is 50 % of these problems, that he carried for so long plus 50 % of the head traumas and drug usage, that progressed everything further. You easily underestimate the bad experiences you have in your early life. People deal differently with them. And he chose that way of self fulfillment at all cost, probably knowing, that it is suicidal. to clarify: I'm not a psychologist nor do I know, that that's, what was going on with him. I just can relate very well to that, because I have these issues, and saw him and his mindset as a role model. I thought that if he can do it, I can do it as well. "Oh I don't need to talk, I don't need to react, but I still can be a role model." I think people with the same issues recognize each other. I can relate to the feeling of losing everything and keep on going and push even more and try to be the best. But in the end, you're gonna get caught, because your issues stay. You can try and do as much as you want, have success, a family, doesn't matter. You feel like a piece of shit and the only thing, that keeps you going are your values and rules and things you put your mind to. But with a traumatized and injured brain, a severe depression, this self imposed pressure and his job as a top level performer, there's no way you are gonna hold up.

The main thing that bugs me about this tragedy is that his brain "was that of an 80 year old alzheimers patient." Yet not one of his colleagues ever mentioned Chris forgetting dates, addresses, wrestling spots, names, etc. ANYTHING that would show such a severe cognitive decline. It doesn't make sense. People that far gone are confused, wander, dont remember names, cant remember dates, can't remember people they've spoken to literally an hour before, etc. If his brain was that far gone how did he have the cognitive function to remember where he lived, remember where to go to wrestle, remember spots during a match, and talk to Chavo coherently? Ive worked with alzheimers patients in my previous career and it is impossible for them to function daily. They need 24/7 care. Yet we're supposed to believe Chris was that far gone and coherent enough to carry out each act? The investigation was also questionable. There are too many questions that sadly we'll probably never get the answers to.

I guess there's a difference between having a brain that is similar to an 80 year old Alzheimer's patient and actually having Alzheimer while being 80 years old. They never concluded that he had Alzheimer, the studies only show that his brain was severely damaged, due to multiple concussions and drug abuse. I just seriously doubt that he wasn't into other drugs besides steroids. And I think the WWE puts a lot of work to cover the fact that wrestlers use recreational drugs to help them carry out the long business hours, serious hazards and public pressure they face in their time at the company. So they try to lean you to look at steroids abuse, because that is somewhat acceptable in society, due to sports like bodybuilding being normal. If you take away the over work, you take away most of their money.

My guess was that it wasn't gradual deterioration like Alzheimer's, but more of instant and constant brain damage physically (headbutts, chair shots, slamming on the head and neck area) and mentally (stress, CTE, bipolar disorder symptoms, paranoia, heavy medication, steroids, lack of sleep etc.). Way different than a severe illness like Alzheimer's.

Education about performance enhancers wouldve prevented it along with CTE awareness, they can in the future. Benoit was at risk of heart failure as well as having heavy brain damage which is ultimately the cause, but not without having a temper and a controlling behaviour, the stories of him bullying others and taking things too seriously are big red flags for someone who has very underdeveloped emotions, it is of course the case with Benoit, the way he projected his lack of emotional development was to live in delusions of grandeur about it essentially reversing the real position and convincing himself that he had incredibly developed emotions and projecting it like Vince did becoming caring and patient with things that their mind could correlate with their complex about emotional stability, if your grandmother was terminally ill they would take the time to be decent and caring, and in doing so kept their delusions in place. It isnt real empathy its like a celebrity throwing money at a charity they never cared about but could, any investment is brand new, a place where underdeveloped emotions dont appear the most infantile thing because everyone starts equal in a new experience. Their lack of emotions appears to be a really strong stable mindset but its from a lack of emotion development, stable and strong a bit like a psychopath but with some small real emotion because he wasnt a psycho he was just underdeveloped emotionally, in his charitable moments it wouldve allowed himself a bit of freedom to show some emotion because while they were being the good guy they had no need to hide their emotional state so it was actually good for him to do that and in some part genuine too but the big point is its all bound to a mental complex like an inferiority complex projecting a forced superiority even though the opposite is true. Benoit had a white knight complex, used charitable moments to avoid and excuse actual development. A huge ego but one that would sacrifice their own health and have great courage to try and live up to it, not so much a narcissist thats the difference, he wasnt the same as Vince. When people do that they spend a LOT of time not using their emotions they take on and develop behaviours that their state of mind reflects, psychopathic behaviours (literally meaning emotionless, not evil) nothing to remind them to relax and balance themselves all forward motion all focus, the more someone focusses the more ignorant they are to that which they arent focussed on, they forget the bigger picture they forget what love is but they use love as a defence and they get very angry with it because their reality is distanced from it. All work and no play makes Chris Benoit a dull boy. A white knight is a "Shining" example. Brain damage will seriously impair someone functions Benoit had a lot of loud arguments with his wife and had headaches in the weeks leading up to the tragedy, brain damage potentially gave him a low enough mood to start arguing, raging at the slightest thing. An example of how CTE can affect a combat sports athlete: Gary Goodridge former armwrestling champion of the world, K1 and MMA competitor has significant CTE, during a get together with friends he did some shadow boxing and then like a switch had been flipped (from the muscle memory) forgot where he was and what he was doing and thought he was back in the K1 ring in the middle of a pro fight and hurt the other guy by going hard, didnt realize it. As soon as Chris put his hands on his wife he mightve snapped into thinking he was fighting and gone too far. He probably felt a ton of guilt but sadly his guilt wouldve been bound to his delusions of grandeur and seeing himself drowning he took down his whole ship which is itself another delusion of grandeur. Had his CTE been recognized and treated he wouldve most likely died of heart failure anyway a few months later, tragedy unavoidable really. Wrestlers shouldve been educated better in performance enhancers, it can be done safely but in most sports its illegal and those who use it which is practically everyone dont have the education to go with it that they otherwise would if it was legal and accepted as normal in sports. Not a stable man not a good role model, but its possible that the only evil he was culpable for and calculated was taking his sons life, the accounts of him being a good person friendly and a family man in the years before it were likely true and not an act. Reports say that Chris had got back from receiving steroids from his doctor that day, Nancy wouldve become aware of the risks when Eddie passed away and wouldve become increasingly concerned seeing the same health risks in what Chris was doing and seeing them worsen, they wouldve been arguing all the time about it. So one thing that wouldnt prevent any of it was people caring about him seeing his decline and making the time to try and help and support him, they did and Chris kept going, wouldnt answer phones even though he listened to every answerphone message left about 20 seconds after the call ended , plenty of people cared and it made no difference in the end, his emotional side that it wouldve made a difference to was too hidden away it had lost control by then, and its most likely because he knew physically he was going to end up like Eddie, like a smoker who realizes it gave them cancer and they keep smoking because they are too proud of their own delusional standards to change anything, they happily sacrifice their own health. After going down a few rabbit holes about the Benoit tragedy this is my take on it.

Thank you for posting this important video! I am a middle-aged female fan of wrestling and Benoit's story always leaves me triggered on many levels. I live with CPTSD in a result of unfortunate situations, including being a victim of abuse. I could say a lot about not-so- obvious-features of abusive people. One of them is insane perfectionism. Perfectionism sounds harmless, but I had a (female) friend who couldn't tolerate any mistake in herself first, and then she started to target other people for supposed "mistakes". She seems to be a good professional, she is clearly talented in her profession, but once you fail her impossible standards, you must "get what you deserve". She knows what I was through, and once I "failed", she did something awful to pull all the emotional triggers of my CPTSD to the max. In a result I ended up at the emergency doc's visit with AFib symptoms. I was sure I was dying. Even the doctor asked me what on Earth happened, because he never saw such a drastic physical reaction to fear. All my friends got informed about my emergency situation, her included. She was the only person who never reacted to it. Never asked me how I was doing, what the doc said. My other friend was the one who noticed it. And she said that she was more than certain, that what was done to me by that other "friend" to trigger my extreme fears wasn't a coincidence. She did it on purpose. It was so shocking, because I new this person for about 3 years, and she always seemed to be empathic and kind. I cut all contact with her immediately. Luckily, we live in different countries, so she can be avoided, but I learned my lesson! I don't care why she did it. Is it her broken personality or some brain illness or whatever... I don't need to know. I know my life is my top priority and I won't risk being in touch with a person who already proved she cannot be trusted. The whole situation between The Miz and Benoit in a locker room.... guys, never ever understimate such situations! "Oh, maybe the guy had just a bad day..." . We all have bad days, folks. But we don't react out of proportion. Reacting with anger out of proportion is always a very bad sign. It doesn't matter what causes such a shift in behaviour. The second real-life thing I experienced is my grandfather's attacks of rage. He was suffering from some sort of brain dysfunction in the older age (he died at 82). I guess it was a mix of a brain injury he had as a youngster ( a tile fell from the roof and broke a bone in his skull) and Alzheimers. At one point he wanted to kill me with an axe or a hammer, I don't remember it too well, I was around 13 years old. I loved and still love my grandpa now when he's gone, but he was dangerous at some point and living with him was a constant danger to everyone. So I guess the tragedy of Benoit was a terrible mix of his perfectionism and ambitions, repetitive physical injuries and use of steroids. And the common denominator, a driver is perfectionism. Could the crime be prevented? We will never know the answer. Just think of my former perfectionist friend's punitive reaction to me "failing" her expectations. It could kill me. So the question is: if Benoit was clear (no steroids use) and if he didn't have multiple concussions, would he still be aggressive / hostile? In theory, he might be still "too ambitious" and he might be driven to achieve success at any price. Including tormenting his "nearests and dearests". That would be the case of my ex boyfriend. He competes in one discipline, and his life revolves about his obsession to win a gold medal in it. And for sure he's a perfectionist (without a talent, but still). A woman he is with should agree to be a mere "addition" to his life. No expectations, no quality time together... she should worship him and be his housekeeper, while he is chasing his dreams of being a champion. And whoever refuses to be treated this way ,may expect not so nice behaviours, so to speak. That guy never had a brain injury, never took steroids. My advice : avoid like a plague people, who dream of a gggrrreeeat success at any price. Because you will be the one who will pay the price one way or another.

I, like many of you watching this video, lived through this tragedy. It's been, what, fifteen years, since this sad case occurred. I understand people want to know what really happened over the course of this weekend. We all wish we could figure out what went into the plotting and execution of this sick situation. The reality is no one, not the greatest psychologist, detective, or fan boy, truly piece these events together in a rational way. We analyze it until we are blue in the face to try to prevent it from happening again. Unfortunately it will happen again, be it a doctor, fireman, or a banker. I guess what I'm trying to say is that videos like this, while entertaining, repeat stuff that most of us already know. I think it all focuses on the perpetrator more than the innocent victims in all this. Never forget Nancy and David.

I have done some research on this as well and found what could be partial the breaking point. At the time ECW was trying to become a new brand under WWE. When I watched the show when it originally aired, I assume they had wrote that he would go look at the belt and act as if he wanted to be champion. He walked to the belt that was vacant. Looked as if he didn't care very much about it and walked away. Kinda glided his hand on it for a moment. To me, this told me he didn't want to be on the show. He had no energy for this belt like he would have on Raw. Not long after was the incident. I found a interview with Kurt Angle on beyond the ropes and he pretty much confirmed this without saying anything about it. Vince wanted Kurt to be the top guy on ECW and told him it was a lot less money. Kurt quit WWE at that point. We can assume they dropped Benoît's pay drastically as well to be a main draw for ECW until the show did better. This video talks about how he stayed with WWE for the money. I can guess this broke his spirit when they had him on a tiny show with little pay. I bet he felt like his career was coming to a end.

Did not expect this video to be part of the algorithm now but I appreciate to be able to see the video now. In retrospect, seing Benoit in some matches or clips where we see him receiving all of those hard hits to the head (front or back) or falling roughly to the canvas makes me wince every time.

Would anything have changed had the warning signs been spotted? My honest answer: no. Even if Woman (Nancy's old ring name) and Daniel were able to escape, Benoit was pretty much living on borrowed time. A commenter mentioned that Benoit had an enlarged heart, which incidentally, was what did Guerrero in, due to Guerrero's past issues with drugs and booze. Even worse for Benoit, the fact he went to make his selling look as real as possible, that also means he did take the bumps (and subsequent pain) for real. Concussions and CTE are taken more seriously these days, but given Benoit's intense personality, I dare you to tell him to take it easy with the bumps and selling. Guerrero's untimely death simply opened the floodgates, and the consequences led to the tragedy in June of 2007. There is definitely no excusing the heinous actions that happened, but given his physical condition and emotional trauma (certainly not helped with Guerrero's passing), it was only a matter of time before the inevitable happened. Just a shame that Woman and Daniel Benoit had to be caught in this crossfire.

Far before the CTE, Benoit just always sounded like he could be a malicious jerk. People in the wrestling business idolized him because he was good in the ring and projected this repressed macho identity the industry loves but stories in Jericho's first book and like those told here reveal a cold, abusive core. It's about time people start feeling free to criticize his toxic behavior and hold him accountable.

He was my hero growing up and it hurts that brain damage caused him to do this and ruin his legacy and his family's lives, you cant even bring him up without people calling him a monster and dismissing the fact that he had CTE. Its been 17 years and it still paims me to think about it. He shouldve retired after Eddy died and maybe he wouldve died before he had a chance to do what he did since allegedly he had 6 momths to live anyways

WWE is equally responsible for what happened, the law won't touch them for their political inclination and the deep pockets, but the steroid abuse, long working hours, no holiday time and lenient wellness policy is what resulted in this tragedy. Vince is to blame as well, he never took wellness of his employees seriously.

I don't think Benoit doing squats after selling a missed dropkick was due to his CTE or whatever. He just put A LOT of pressure on himself, and felt like selling a botched move should result in punishment. Doesn't mean he didn't have any CTE then, but I do think that incident was moreso him demanding absolute perfection from himself and punishing himself in a way that'll "teach" him never to do anything like that again.

All i gotta say is you're brain is the most important organ and if the slightest thing is off you're in trouble because its the only organ you cant transplant. I dissected brains a few times(because i was going to be a brain surgeon). Ive also seen what brain damage can do and even medication especially with alcohol. It definitely can cause violent outbursts hallucinations etc. If you have too much protein (eating too many vegetables) too little protein ect it can cause chaos brain bleeds aneurysms etc. My grandmother had brain bleeds and strokes because of too much protein(too many veggies). She had violent outbursts so much so 6 grown men doctors had trouble handing her. My sister had an allergic reaction to medicine- made her hallucinate and jump out a window. Considering Benoits brain during autopsy was like an 80 yr olds it makes sense. Actually im surprised he didn't kill someone in the ring. Having a 80yr old brain in an 40yr old body is a problem. It's putting regular gas in a diesel gas tank. His brain couldn't pump his body fast enough. Combine that with insomnia which makes holes in your brain and chair shots body etc its a matter of time. Cte by itself can cause this.
