This is a video demonstration explaining the core concept of skeletal (bone) support as opposed to muscle support in competitive rifle shooting and how that concept can crossover into photography.

Guys, he's demonstrating a stance that focuses on accuracy over anything. In a case where accuracy is paramount, this is what you want. It's also like he said, it's to eliminate fatigue if you have to hold the stance for extended periods of time. The square off, lean forward stance is great for pistols; or with rifles closer range timed/reaction. The trade off is that this technique will fatigue you quicker. They are different tools for different situations.

The reason why many use the support grip you described is because it gets the gun directly over the arm, keeping the support arm as straight up and down as possible with minimal tilt with respect to the vertical axis. You want the support arm with minimal to no angle, straight up an down as possible because you don't want any of the weight of the gun pull your support arm in any direction, thereby affecting the hold.

When I started service rifle, I was shooting mid 60s or worse offhand. The thing that helped me the most was ceasing to shoulder the rifle. I started resting the toe of the stock on my clavicle and canting the sights inward to my eye. This allowed me to keep my neck completely straight and in line with my spine, which did wonders for my balance and consequently my holds. When I combined that with more natural point of aim drills, I jumped to shooting mid 90s offhand in less than a month.

No, you need to lean back slightly. That creates the bone support for the upper body, specifically the arm/elbow to rest against the torso. It also has the effect of bringing the weight of the rifle over closer to the center of your hips, supporting all that weight. If you want to shoot tactical aka 'dynamic' rifle/carbine, then yes, forward lean will be fine since you're in a dynamic situation. But I'm specifically addressing skeletal support for accuracy/marksmanship.

cool video. my friend linked me. it makes sense. after a full day of shooting my arms get super tired too. i found that when i need a really steady shot, (i dont have IS) i hold the end of the bottom sunshade cut outs. i press the left cut out with my thumb, and right cut out with pointer finger and grip the lens. the support will be body of the cam and end of the lens rather than body/tripod collar. i also press the cam into my face to keep it more steady instead of trying to hold up the lens.

That form is what I have used successfully when hunting game at longer distances with my R700 in 308. It seemed most stable and natural to me, and I try to avoid gripping the fore-end of the stock, as it seemed to add in more horizontal wobble. It looks kinda silly, but man does it sure work.

For an AR to be legal for Service Rifle competition, it has to be a 20". I don't think contour matters, as long as it will work with A2 handguards and an A2 front sight base (of course, you can use a free float tube underneath the A2 handguards).

Do you think there would be a market for a hand support that would attach to the tripod mount on the lens. It would be similar to had supports that go on Olympic style rifles on the rails. You might not be able to focus though. hmmm small touch switch and rubber band driven by a small motor could do it. or it could be a manual little belt loop system.

Lol, so many people tend to do a double take when they see me shooting with my support arm vertical and close to my body (as opposed to the "folk wisdom" of an extended support arm, which I suppose may have its place when doing close quarter/tactical shooting). And adding to the "strangeness", with an AR-15, I tend to "pronate" (ie, facing away from the body) my wrist as opposed to the "normal" supinated position that people are used to seeing, with my hand open (fingers NOT wrapped around the rifle), palm up, and thumb extended to the point where it could just touch my left shoulder...I mean, I can see how it would look unconventional, and I can definitely see how it would be an impractical stance for shooting in a fortified position where anyone could pop up against you at any angle...On the other hand, I suppose most folks aren't used to having to get into a position where their bone structure allows them to consistently hit a 4 MoA target standing off hand with no sling...

@Sturmmann for sure, I have shot with a glove and jacket smallbore prone quite a while ago, I think I was 12 or something like that, amazing how steady you can get, how does the jacket help in standing though? from my experience, the glove and jacket just make having the sling bearable and extend the ammount of time you have before your hand goes blue :)

Also thought I should mention another thing Bone Support is important for. Rock climbing. In rock climbing one of the biggest mistakes made is when people want to constantly be on their arm muscles and wear themselves out (its funny the bulkier the climber the worse they usually are at this too). Keeping your arms straight and resting on your bones as much as you can is key to conserving energy. I'm sure this applies to many other practices as well.

"Service rifles" can carry internal modifications for accuracy, so long as they do not make the rifle unsafe or interfere with the operation of the gas system. Some competitions have a minimum trigger pull External modifications are pretty limited. Some competitions are "As-Issued," which don't allow nearly the level of modification.

No, I haven't recorded anything on pistol shooting support. If you're talking about two-handed pistol shooting like IPSC, IDPA, and USPSA, check out the videos by Todd Jarrett or Jerry Miculek. If you're talking about Bullseye-style one-handed pistol shooting (NRA Bullseye or EIC Service Pistol), I'm not sure what's a good reference for that. If you google for "USAMU pistol training", there's a document you can download which is the training documentation for the Army Marksmanship Unit pistol competitors.

if you were shooting with a more powerful caliber, like .308, would you modify at all for more shoulder contact, or would you keep it as you show there? or is more contact a question of stock choice? thanks. great vid.
@ocabj
@ocabj 9 жыл бұрын
Lyle W Yes, toe'ing the stock high on the shoulder with the AR is kind of cheating since you can get away with it. You would good solid buttplate to shoulder contact. But with the AR service rifle, the weak recoil is a gift. If it were a .308 AR, you might need more solid contact. With an M14, you would definitely need to shoulder more. But if you have a gun with stock adjustments (e.g. match rifle with adjustable buttplate, camber, etc), you have an easy way to deal with buttstock to shoulder contact.

I've seen some poorly installed muzzle brakes, or otherwise haphazardly. Friend of mine had a Smith Enterprises muzzle brake installed on an M14 and it shot significantly worse than the Springfield Armory Inc factory brake (for California). At least an extra half MOA on the groups at 200 yards. Definitely not good.
@hellcatdave1

Unless designed to decrease muzzle climb, of course, that would increase the rifles accuracy.
@ocabj
@ocabj 11 жыл бұрын
Being able to take a follow up shot faster with a rifle that recoils less than another isn't a measurement of accuracy. Even if you argue that the reducing effect of recoil eliminates anticipation of recoil (flinch), that's still an issue of operator error, not the gun's accuracy. The gun is still accurate as without a muzzle brake. It's going to shoot the same size groups as without. If it doesn't due to operator error, that's not the fault of the gun. So you can't say the gun is not accurate.

@johnpatrick818 Don't be ignorant. What you said is true, a gun is the generalized name. But in this case, when talking about how to properly fire a gun, both safely and accurately, the proper name would be a weapon. Regardless if you're shooting a target or a person, in this usage of the gun, it's a weapon. If you still disagree, I'm pretty sure we can both agree to disagree that it's a rifle.

Rifle shooters need to keep in mind he's demonstrating a target shooting stance that you would never really use outside of competition. That leaning back stance is horrible for rapid fire and/or high power. But, if you need to make an extremely accurate shot from the standing position, it's just about the only way to do it. Go out and practice this - rapid fire at 200 yds at a man-sized target (you'll find the 'normal' stance effective) - then try to hit that same target in a 6-inch area (you'll find the leaning back stance much easier). When I took up photography, I understood this naturally - the leaning back stance works really well for holding a camera, because you need accuracy and stability, NOT target acquisition speed.

The position at 04:00, for sure is an unstable and truly "unsupported position," for making an accurate shot. I test up to 75 men, women, and children in a week, in rifle shooting, and assure this is the case. Just as a side note, however, if the target is moving, e.g. skeet, trap, sporting clay, that forward position is ideal as it allows for rapid pivots in up, down, left, right directions. That may also be applicable with e.g. close up sport photography eh?

@ocabj
@ocabj 10 жыл бұрын
Assuming it's a standard, traditional style stock with a fixed buttplate like the factory stock, then you'd probably hurt yourself since the rifle will slip off your shoulder. Traditional fixed "hunting" stocks aren't ideal for standing. Ideally, you would customize such a gun for your body. In "match rifle" categories, rules allow the use of such adjustable stocks, where you can adjust the height of the butt plate relative to the bore line so you can increase or decrease the elevation of the gun while still having the butt of the stock in the pocket of the shoulder (or on the chest). More advanced systems will allow you to adjust the cant of the stock, to angle it outboard or inboard, and then have adjustable cheekpieces for height and camber.

@ocabj
@ocabj 10 жыл бұрын
stacy4422 Can you shoot like this for moving targets? Yes. Can you shoot like this for a quick standing 'snap' shot? Yes. Can you walk and shoot like this? No. The whole body lean is provided you're in a stationary position. If you're shooting while on the move e.g. dynamic carbine/rifle deployment with a semi-auto/auto, you'll be going with the more contemporary side arm/foreend hold pull the rifle back into the shoulder (see any training vids by Magpul, Haley, or Costa). As far as with a Rem 700, you wouldn't be shooting while moving since you'd most likely switch to a sidearm. Dynamic shooting adopts totally different approaches to marksmanship than with fixed position shooting, with regards to stance and body position. The basics of sight picture, sight alignment, and trigger control are the same, but how the body platform is 'built' and deployed are different.

I might be a wimp here but personally I don't like using the magazine for a support after seeing how some of the failures occur with overpressured rounds. What happens is the magazine blows out and the way I see it if your hand is there that too is going to get messed up. While the chance of your rifle blowing up is one in a million, I just wouldn't take that chance putting my hand there.

Good thing it was made so clear it wasn't loaded, I was so afraid of getting shot while watching this video because there is a gun in it. But, where did the gun go? OH NO, Its probably walking around loading itself and hurting people as he talks about the camera... He's such an irresponsible gun owner.

This is close to a typical European standing target shooting stance. Check out any biathlon competition. Most target shooters in the traditional rifle shooting sports use this position. Biathlon kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bs1gZKqWxJ60gYk.html

@willblackb4 I seriously hope that you aren't "coaching" anyone in real life. While they both might utilize AR pattern rifles, High Power target shooting requires a different skill-set than tactical shooting. If you'd take a second to stifle that reflexive rage of yours, you would have realized this. Tucking the rifle in, dropping the arm, the forward lean, and squaring up the target is the most effective "tactical" means of putting rounds on target. High power comp is simply different.
