Hello and welcome to Stingray Tom's Florida
Today I'm taking a quick look at Ocala's famous thoroughbred breeding and training industry, with an exploration of one of the area's most historic horse farms - Tartan Farm - and its remarkable horse cemetery. And yes, it's a part of Florida's tourism history. Enjoy!

Yes! Marion County, Fla is Horse Capital of the World®, a registered trademark of the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders' & Owners' Assn. This trademark is used to promote the goods and services and create a brand for the area. We also actually happen to have more horses and ponies than any other U.S. county, so we are Horse Capital of the World® in both ways. Kentucky is the worldwide leader in thoroughbreds and thus the Thoroughbred Capital of the World.

We actually have 80,000 horses in the county, thoroughbreds are the predominant breed with more than 39,000 and more than 15,000 thoroughbreds train each Winter/Spring on Ocala for their early schooling.

I really hope they keep the plan to keep that part open. They passed all the zoning and will start developing it soon, sadly. I have grown up seeing and loving this farm and sad to see it go.

I can't officially speak to that, but I believe that it's the official plan. The area is required to have open space, such as a park, so it make sense to keep the focus on the area's history.

@@StingrayTomsFlorida I agree, so much of Ocala's history is gone over the years, with so much development. Marion county put a stop to The Villages moving into the county, but they have developed so much on their own, that there is little left to Original Ocala. I feel cemeteries should be protected, no matter what kind of cemetery it is. So much history in them.

Is the cemetery able to be visited?

Hello! At this time (June 2022 for future readers), I don't think it can be visited. It's on private property with the land slated to be developed. I used to visit it when it was part of Winding Oaks. If you got permission from the office, you'd be allowed on the property. It might be best to wait until the park/greenspace is developed. I'll be keeping an eye on the process and hope to report further. Thanks for the question!
