I'm from France. In reality it is much broader than that, France has an extraordinary linguistic diversity, but since the revolution, the government has done everything to impose French and suppress these languages. Until recently in the French countryside people spoke their local languages among themselves, and French for the administration. Then, measures were imposed, students did not have the right to speak their language at school under penalty of being punished, for example. More and more francization was voluntarily imposed on all aspects of daily life, and with time, these languages started to disappear because they were not transmitted correctly. Today, very few French people speak their regional language, that of their ancestors. Regional cultures are also being swept away in the same way. This is how Occitan, Corsican, Basque, Breton, Alsatian, Provençal, Nissart, Chtimi, and so many others are in danger of disappearing, which will not take long. France has succeeded in its work. It's very sad.

To add to the official thingy: As per the second paragraph of the French constitution, French is the sole official language of France (République Française, 5ème République, whatever), which means that not only Occitan doesn't have an official status, but all other minority languages don't either.

@@gabrieledonofrio1612The word is still quite exaggerated. But in a way you are right. Peasant dialects are erased and banned. And above all, real languages like Occitan, Breton... We're not just talking about a few peasant ways of speaking present everywhere in France, but about languages with real spelling, grammar, conjugation... a language in its own right. That the official language of France is French, normal. But remove the other languages...not necessary

I also did this when i was in Elemantary school, back then in my school whoever that students speaking Javanese instead of speaking Indonesian Teacher were often punished us by Slap ourselves in the face 😔 (i did this as well, my teacher forced this when i was young) and now the Javanese languange in my province's school were almost decreased.

Langues d’oïl didn’t develop from old French. "Old French" doesn’t really exist, it’s just a name we give to all forms of early langues d’oïl. Occitan is not the only family of languages the French Republic tried to annihilate, they also wanted to destroy every langue d’oïl that wasn’t French, also Breton, Flamand, Alsacien, Corse and Arpitan.

Still the name "old French" is also use for all forms of old oïl languages, but old French existed. It was just one of them, at that time they were all mutually intelligible. "Franceis".

@@systemreactive4092 The Franks represented only a small portion of the population of France (tens of thousands), the vast majority of the population in France were Gallo-romans (5-10 millions), romanized celts speaking many dialects of Vulgar Latin / Proto Romance The franks adopted those languages and abandoned their own language, old Frankish. Old Frankish has left only few words in Old French and it is not the direct ancestor of French, old Frankish was a German language, it however became Old Dutch (Old Low Franconian, a dialect of Old Frankish) and later Dutch.

There has never be a « war » of northerners against occitan as many people who do not know French history well tend to think. There has been a « war » from Paris against ALL dialects of France... which means against 90% of the country. No distinction between oil or occitan dialects, or franco provencal, catalan, corscian, or non-latin languages of France such as Basque, Breton, Flemish or Alsacian. All regional languages had been treated the same way. We could almost say that it was even stronger towards oil dialects, because as they were closer to Parisian, they suffer from disappearing more quickly.

but langues d'oil are a lot closer to french, that means it was not as dificult for them to switch from one or the other, that means that the pressure against occitan was harder because it was from a longer distance and was different.

Not aimed at the language, but the Albigensian crusade was a devastating blow to the courts and elites of the south, and with them the rich troubadour culture. This had lasting effects on the status of the language.

Notice that it's the French Republic who made efforts to supress it and not the Kingdom of France. The IIIrd Republic tried to wash away all the dialects and other languages (Alsatian, Occitan, Arpitan, Britton, Flemish, Catalan, Bask, Corse and Langue d'oïl dialects)

François Ier declared French national language of the kingdom and signed the ordonnance of Villers-Cotterêts that prescribed the use of French in official documents. So the suppression of regional languages started earlier than the IIIrd Republic.

@@Chuckloris84 La langue française dans l'administration n'avait que très peu d'influence sur le français lambda du XVIème siècle, ça ne concernait que les actes de naissances / mariages / décès, les contrats etc, la France était très peu alphabétisée de toute manière. Si un paysan du XVIème qui parle picard doit faire baptiser son fils, il ira le faire auprès du prêtre (les premiers registres d'état civil sont tenus par l'église), le prêtre sera simplement tenu de rédiger ses registres en français mais lui-même parle la langue locale au quotidien. Voilà l'effet qu'a l'ordonnance de Villers-Cotteret sur le français moyen, bien sûr il y a des exceptions et dans les villes la langue française se propage plus rapidement qu'à la campagne. Voilà ce qu'écrit Henri Grégoire à la Convention Nationale en 1794 dans son "Rapport sur la nécessité et les moyens d’anéantir les patois et d’universaliser l’usage de la langue française": "On peut assurer sans exagération qu’au moins six millions de Français, sur-tout dans les campagnes, ignorent la langue nationale ; qu’un nombre égal est à-peu-près incapable de soutenir une conversation suivie ; qu’en dernier résultat, le nombre de ceux qui la parlent purement n’excède pas trois millions ; & probablement le nombre de ceux qui l’écrivent correctement est encore moindre." Donc 3 millions de français sur 28 millions qui parlaient le français comme langue principale en 1794, autant dire que l'ordonnance de Villers-Cotterêts n'a pas vraiment eu l'importance qu'on lui accorde sur la diffusion du Français.

"Endangered" is an understatement. It wasen't so bad in the 1990's, but things went down really fast after that. Fully-native speakers who could say everything of the daily life in Occitan are almost all gone. There remains many older heritage speakers who were heavily influenced by French and do code-switching to French alot. Very few people under 60 can speak with a decent syntax and accent. This includes the teachers who often don't speak the language fluently. Even in Occitan language festivals few people speak it. You'd expect people go there to practice, but it's mostly French speakers, with the obligatory "Se Canta" and other songs in Occitan. You can also speak French to buy a book written in Occitan. If you insist on speaking it you'll find fluent speakers who will switch to Occitan. Insist alot.

@@fueyo2229 No, the official language of Catalunya is Català, that is like saying Spanish is the official language of Portugal. However, Aranés is a dialect of Occitan which is still preserved in Spain on the Valle d'Arán

The French government wants to ensure a French State with one language, one people and one nation. That's the policy officially for the national government. This happened in Germany, Italy and Great Britain. The locals must preserve the language themselves and use that as their language of every day discourse.

Slight correction: Occitan is also spoken in parts of Spain (with many (idk if all) of its Spanish varieties recieving the name "Gascón"), though even here it isn't an official language, but different varieties of it do have some legal recognitions. It's a shame that France doesn't even feel a bit of shame for killing these languages. We here in Spain should also be doing more to protect them tbf, but the situation in France is just horrible.

@@mems_surenys and it's incredibly based xd, tɡouɡh idk much about it other than one fun fact: Latin/Romance word-initial clusters cl-, fl-, and pl- often turned into ll- in Spanish and many other languages of the peninsula, and in others they stayed as cl-, fl-, pl- (I believe this includes some varieties of Gascón and/or Aragonese), but Aranese went the middle way and ended up with the unpronunciable cll-, fll-, and pll-, which is just based imo. (source: I don't remember where I read this)

Actually, Gascon is an Occitan dialect spoken in the french region of Gascogne (on the map, the dialect in the West). Aranese is the dialect of Gascon spoken in Spain, but it's a tiny bit of the entire Gascon area 😉

In Spain, it's called Aranese (Aranés) and it's a sub dialect of the Gascon occitan dialect, it's an official language regionally and has full protection as do the other official languages in Spain such as Basque or Catalan

I'd disagree-ish? I dont live in France, but I've found out that occitans that moved out of France are often very aware of their heritage and very proud of it, while, when I look at my cousins whom have always lived in Occitania, they mostly seem to not care. When I speak to my uncle and aunt, they kinda seem like they've given up on it. They're aware of what happened and the pain it caused, but it's like they gave up on trying to salvage anything. It's a sort of quiet and resigned defeatism that kinds of make me sad to see

I live in Alsace but I've only heard of the history of Occitània. Elsàss, Breizh, etc only thanks to foreigners on map and ethnic discussion communities talking about it. It does make sense to, since most French people are in a cultural bubble and this kind of thing is rarely spoken. That's the case for other groups too. For example, the African Americans understood their unbelievable oppression they had in the US in the 50s only after visiting the USSR.

100%, the same thing is happening with every minority culture in every Post-Victorian State, its a genuine tragedy. Especially the lack of Christianity which would give people a goal, hope & meaning makes people very prone to defeatism since "nothing matters anyways" if things go array. The repression of the Occitan language only started with the French Revolution, so only 200 years ago, because the Jacobins were strictly opposed to the regionalist model proposed by their political enemies the Girondins, considering it as seditious and conspiratorial. Under the Old Regime, the monarchy had nothing against local languages. Louis the XIV even had representatives from Amerindian tribes shipped over to France, just so they could greet the king in their own language, as a display of prestige. The French Republic has on the contrary twisted some historical decrees, like the Ordinance of Villers-Cotterêts in 1539, to push the false narrative that French authorities always acted with the same brutality they displayed against cultural minorities, in a classic attempt to darken the past to better sell their bright tomorrow.

Typical decolonial lies and victim mentality. The Cathar Crusade had nothing to do with linguistic oppression, it was a military invasion backed by the pope to crush an heresy that deprived the church of parish tithes. The new rulers did nothing against the Occitan language, and in fact promoted the most prestigious cultural institution in that language: the Academy of Floral Games in Toulouse. You can easily find photos of Languedoc winegrowers protesting against imported competition in 1907 and all of their signs were still in Occitan. As for the supposed intentions of the king of France towards native Americans, let's just defer to the title they used for him "The Tallest Mountain in the World" as a clear sign of respect and consideration.

@@adrasthe314 No, you’re just an ignorant, Louis XIV did invite a native, Nescambiouit, chief of the Abenakis in 1705, he highly respected him, gave him many presents and also knighted him. Louis XV also invited a native chief in Paris in 1725 (Agapit Chicagou). The french never wanted to destroy and enslave the natives like the English or the Spanish did, instead they wanted to trade and share. The french would also adopt natives traditions, languages and cultures. Many French at the time married natives, the Baron de Saint-Castin for exemple. In 1665, Louis XIV gave the instruction that no land should be taken from the natives for the French: "Qu’on n’usurpe point les terres sur lesquelles ils sont habituez soubs prétexte qu’elles sont meilleures ou plus convenables aux François" An American historian, Francis Parkman said: "Spanish civilization crushed the Indian; English civilization scorned and neglected him; French civilization embraced and cherished him" You seem highly uneducated on this subject.

It did have strong celtic influence, just not the same variety of celtic as parisian french, which mainly affects the distinct modern french accent. And yes, not nearly as much germanic.

Bruh.. Catalan and Occitan developed around the same time, they derived from Latin and for a long time (prior to the 11th to 14th century) people believed they were the same language. They heavily influenced each other and were influenced by Spanish dialects and Italian dialects as well. Occitan did not come from Catalan.

My mother who was born in 1926 told me that on schoolwalls, it was written "speak french !" Personally I'm capable to speak occitan ! "oc" in Occitan means yes and is pronounced "o" (( WE dont hear the C )

France, like Italy, has a poor record with its regional languages however the 2021 Molac Law recognises the overall importance of these languages by awarding them the status of “national treasure” and, secondly, supporting the teaching of regional languages. There are 50+ Diwan bilingual Breton-French schools for immersive teaching and a similar number of Calandreta schools teaching in Occitan and French.

Ever since the Jacobins, languages and dialects of France have been rapidly waning. Some Occitans don’t even know they’re Occitans.

1. Occitan is not a single language but a branch of the Romance languages. Gascon and Provençal, e.g., aren't mutually intelligible. Catalan is arguably part of it. 2. The Occitan language was not oppressed for five centuries. Its golden troubadour years were far behind when, by the 16th century, most southern French writers had already switched to French. The oppression began when French was declared the sole official language during the Revolution, and was intensified by the so-called "vergonha", standing for "shame", where in the late 19th century, as public education became mandatory in France, so did the use of French for pupils at school, leading to the rapid decline of not only Occitan languages but also Breton, Alsacian, and even other Oïl languages, such as Picard, Angevin, Lorrain, Normand, Gallo, all to the profit of standard French. 3. The French government probably does not care if you know about Occitan. The decline is irreversible, and the people pf southern France view French as their native tongue. This has been the case since the mid 20th century at the latest. Overall not a very good short.

occitan is more of a collection of languages with common traits than its own actual language. i, for example, speak south Auvergnat, and people who speak Nissard have a hard time understanding me when i speak. both of these languages are considered occitan dialects

Occitan is a language with different dialects, but it's a unique language. The problem of intercomprehension don't mean it's a different language, it's like french speaked by a canadian, a Belge, and a parisian, it's not the same pronounciation, the same words and expression, but they are all speaking the same language, the french. I'm occitan, and i learned Lengadocian, and i arrive to understand Gascon, Lemosin, Provençal,... I already read Auvergnat and i understand. Perhaps for understanding when a people speak it would be a little difficult at the beginning, the time to understand the accent, but it would be like to speak french with a Canadian from Quebec.

Unfortunately, on our world, cultures aren't created equal, and some get way more publicity and spotlight than others. You can see this for example with Ukraine. It only gets spotlight right now, before that, most people only looked at them as basically similar to Russians, and in the 19th century as outright just a part of Russian culture. It's only now they get recognition they deserve for their unique identity, culture and history. Occitan culture still gets treated as Ukrainian culture was in the 19th century, completely forgotten and ignored. Just seen as a part of France. Despite the fact it has an extremely rich literary tradition, including the Nobel prize winning writer Frédéric Mistral, it also has the Troubadours, it used to be the love language, it's where d'Artagnan is from (Gasconha), etc. And if you're wondering what other cultures are completely ignored and hidden, you could find plenty. If you're in the US, I would say Indigenous cultures are completely ignored in many areas, despite the fact they used to be the majority cultures in all of North America before the brutal colonialism. People know more about the differences of Ohio vs Idaho than between the Haida and Chickasaw nation, despite the fact that the latter are millenia long existing cultures, and the former are recently created borders by settlers for administrative reasons, and so obviously with way less cultural differences.

No, Gallia Celtica dont encompassed all France, Aquitania wasn't celt, Narbonensin have iberian and ligurian roots (it's still a debate if ligure = celt)
