Ocean Liners have come in all different shapes and sizes. In this video I have combined a few of my ship drawings in order to show how big, and small, some of history's great liners have been. Ships in order are:
MS Aurelia, MS Batory, RMS Canton, RHMS Ellinis, TSS Strathaird, SS Kronprinzessin Cecilie, SS America, RMS Lusitania, RMS Titanic and RMS Queen Mary.
The best method for determining the size of a ship is the Gross Tonnage (Formerly Gross Registered Tonnage, GRT) which is a measure of the ship's internal volume. This video, however, focuses only on vessel length as a visual indicator of size.
All these drawings and MORE available at my site www.oceanlinerdesigns.com/

I have a nut and bolt from the Queen Mary, removed whilst being repaired. A workman threw it up on deck and it hit my foot (was a toddler). The workman was very apologetic and offered us free drinks at the bar, we declined but asked if we could keep the nut and bolt. The workman was so relieved he also signed a piece of paper stating it was an original piece of the Queen Mary. The paper has long since faded but I still have the bolt (didn’t realise the Queen Mary was bigger than the titanic tbh).

@@jamesreader9801 I was talking about the liners in this video. Normandie wasn’t in it. But I actually prefer the Queen Mary over the Normandie, at least her exterior. Well as a matter of fact the Olympic class was about 40-50% bigger in volume that's gross tonnage. So that is very big leap in size I do say for a new size record.
@connorpusey5912
@connorpusey5912 3 жыл бұрын
@@Wonkothenormal A lot of that was due to hull shape, as the Olympic class was “thicker” shaped than the Lusitania/Mauretania, who were more slenderly shaped. But in terms of dimensions, there wasn’t a drastic difference. A difference, yes, just not what could be considered a “leap”.

The ignorant scriptwriters ALWAYS refer to sizes in the shape of "Football Pitches", "Eiffel Towers", "Statue of Liberty", 'Double Decker Buses" etc. but what happened to an artists impression of these liners superimposed in recognizable areas or places, like Trafalgar Square, Times Square, etc, etc? THAT way you can just get an idea of the sheer sizes.

I've seen an illustration somewhere of the _Queen Mary_ standing on end in midtown Manhattan, to make the point that she's virtually the same length as the Chrysler Building is tall. I'm not sure if that's something Cunard produced at the time or a later artist's idea, though I remember it in a vintage style. (Fun fact: the Chrysler Building had only been complete about six months, and was in the middle of its very brief reign as the world's tallest building, when the _Queen Mary_ was laid down!)

I've always been curious about the actual 'feel' of interior space in the Olympic and Titanic. The second class section looked so small, the passengers must've been so board. Also, having sailed on modern cruise ships, the Queen Mary still FEELS larger even though she is not.
@nutellafoxvideos7350
@nutellafoxvideos7350 3 жыл бұрын
The thing to keep in mind is that these ships were around just to get people places, unlike now where a modern cruise ship is meant to entertain. On the Olympic as a second class passenger you would probably just spend your time in the library or smoking room reading/playing cards or other games while sailing. A smoke and beer or two. Maybe you'd just enjoy a chat with someone or some time above deck watching the sea go by or whatever have you. Go off and get meals a couple times a day. Similar thing for 3rd class passengers, they just had a saloon and smoking room though. Probably plenty of poker and other gambling games going on. TBH not really a bad deal. And then you can always just go below deck to your cabin and sleep/rest during the voyage so you can go off and do your work/business when you're landside again. Honestly for a trip that's just meant to get you to somewhere it sounds kinda nice to me. Cruise Ships seem so busy and stressful.

@@nutellafoxvideos7350 Thank you so much for your well thought of & informative reply. Though I realise the Olympic Class Liners weren't modern pleasure ships, let me better explain my point; Taking all 3 classes into account, I think that 2nd class got the short end of the stick. The 2nd class space and accommodations are very confined to one small area of the ship, extending from the boat deck down to F deck past the 4th funnel and forward of the stern well deck. 2nd class has only TWO public rooms, and ladies weren't permitted into the smoking room prior to WWI. Images of the staircase foyers show very little furniture. (the library and smoke room have very little furniture). The 2nd class dining saloon is large (room for 550), hence where did these 550 ppl entertain themselves when it wasn't meal time? The library is small, the foyers have few chairs, the promenades are small with few benches Also, the layout is odd. 550 ppl could be seated at once in the dining saloon but, there is no reception space outside the facility; where did they que for dinner? (I can only imagine 550 passengers literally lining up and down the stairwell waiting for the doors to open). Also, the library and smoking room aren't "opened" well to the ship, the aft door to these spaces (a single door) is located DIRECTLY behind the stern mast! Passengers would have to walk around the mast to access the door!!! Meanwhile, first class had the full length of the superstructure, squash court, gym, pool, Turkish Baths, massage areas, various lounges, smoke room, cafe's, palm courts, lobbies etc. Also, I'd argue 3rd class had more space than second. They had access to the full width of the ship, having the general and smoking room at the stern, and the general open space under the forward well deck. The dining saloon down on G deck was accessed using Scotland Road ... thus they often would walk the entire length of of the ship (to dine or use the forward space) Outside, 3rd class had the poop deck, the forward and aft well decks for outdoor usage. My conclusion is that second class passengers basically had one lounge and very little deck space to utilize during the crossing. I think that White Star Line new that 2nd class wasn't their bread and butter. Prior to sailing 2nd class passengers were allowed to tour first class - this was probably a promotional adventure in the hopes that at the start of the voyage, some 2nd class would opt to change their ticket to 1st class. I believe in her later career, the Olympic did away with 2nd and 3rd class and combined the two calling it "tourist second". The 3rd class dining saloon was used by the crew and the tourist class passengers used all the second class space plus the aft end third class rooms. (which were spruced up with plants and more chairs/tables).

@@jaguar4u2012 Thanks so much for your reply. My critique wasn't so much how the 2nd class area looked (the 2nd class library of the Britannic, preserved today, looks amazing) but, rather that it was poorly laid out, cramped and lacked basic amenities. My theory is that White Star knew that the bulk of their revenue was from 1st and 3rd thus, skimped out on 2nd. When fully booked, 2nd class could accommodate 550 passengers and yet, there are only 2 public rooms (one of which was off limits to ladies until 1920). Thus, one general lounge for that many people seems outrageous to me. Meanwhile, the staircase lobbies had very few chairs, and the promenade decks were small with few benches, thus were did 550 ppl occupy themselves all day? The dining Saloon looked grand but, I can't comprehend where (if full) 550 passengers would've waited before the the doors opened for dinner. There is a picture of the Olympics 2nd class pursers office and the space on the landing (equivalent to the landing on D-Deck) LITERALLY has space for three individuals to stand in a row - hence I can only think that before dinner, they all had to wait up and down the two staircases. Another awful feature is the single door to the 2nd class lounge ("the library") is LITEARLLY placed behind the aft-mast! It is crazy to position the doorway to the only unisex lounge in such an awkward spot. Later in her career, Olympic did away with 3rd class altogether and the stern 3rd class rooms were added to "Tourist 2nd class" .... that was probably a much better layout for those middle income passengers. When

@@Napp28 yeah, I know you meant the layout, it looks like a tower with two stairwells on each side, with promenades and public areas in the middle, and cabins at the bottom but I can find flaws in First Class too... hehe, even though its layout was the most conventional. anyhow, trust me you'd rather be in second class and not 3d, They had an elevator in second class, all the way from F deck to Boat deck... You must remember its an ocean liner, the passangers first priority is to get from Destination A to Destination B, its a 5 days trip, Equivellent to Long Hull Flights, people just need a place to stay, sleep and eat, all so the second class cabins were very much like the First Class Standart Cabins, ohh and the menu in second class was great it was worth the extra 20-30$ back in 1912

I somehow missed this when it came out. I really do enjoy your beautiful illustrations. They go beyond technical excellence (which they obviously have no shortage of) to convey emotion; perhaps a sense of history and your genuine love of these ships... Whatever it is, please keep doing it. My head is still swimming from the one at the end with all of them. Amazing. I was reminded what a fine-looking ship M/S Batory was. The 1930s were a very high point in passenger ship design. Which brings me to a suggestion I have for future consideration: TSS Awatea, the exquisite Trans-Tasman express liner. Such a breathtaking ship, and fast as well. It's tragic that her career was so short. I'd love to see her illustrated by you. Thanks again for the work you do.

@@pRahvi0 The SS Queen Mary was indeed a fantastic ocean liner, but not the pinnacle. The design was in fact somewhat outdated with a non-bulbous bow when she was launched. The earlier SS Bremen and SS Europa for example had more modern designs. In terms of great design and similar or greater lengths, there have been quite a few after her. I'd rank the SS Normandie as the very best ocean liner ever (year: 1932, length: 1,029 ft). There are also the SS United States (the fastest ever; year: 1951, length: 990 ft) the SS France (year 1969, length: 1.035 feet 7 inches) and of course the sister ship SS Queen Elizabeth (year: 1938, length: 1,031 ft ).

@@truefilm6991 tbh, the Olympic class still sometimes gets completely lost to the massive shadow of the fame of QM1, it's kinda sad that Olympic, (being the most forgotten ship of the class) is almost always caught in that shadow... after all, she was for her time so advanced that she'd have a fame shadow 2x bigger than QM1's fame shadow upon her completion in the 1930s... that fame shadow of Olympic alomst completely disappeared after the Titanic disaster in april of 1912 but in MY heart, Olympic will always remain the number 1 GREATEST OCEAN LINER OF ALL TIME! she even makes the freedom ship look like a floating cardboard box with some white lines scribbled on top of it!

I find it interesting how the rudders changed. The older boats had more curved, eliptical shaped rudders. Whereas the newer boats just had rectangles, what reason is there for this? Was it simply ease of construction and cost?

I know it may not fit into the timeframe of the Era of the Great Liners, and that it really never was used or found success in it's intended role, but is there any way you could cover I.K. Brunel's magnum opus the SS Great Eastern? There are very few videos available that show this amazing ship in as much technical detail as other ships are shown. How such a ship was constructed in the 1850's was an astounding feat for the era! Thank you for your consideration!

The way this comparison is done is a bit confusing. Would have been better if the ships came from the top and exited at the bottom. The fading in fading out thing is not easy to watch. Also, metric units would be better.

Just for smiles and giggles, it might have been nice to put the modern Queen Mary 2, or one of the modern cruise ships like Symphony of The Seas or something like that on there. I've seen a meme showing the small narrow ship called the Titanic from head on and one of the large cruise ships literally a big massive hulk behind it sticking out on both sides....that would have just topped this video off perfectly. It was interesting, nonetheless. Would have liked to have seen the SS United States though....

@@DerpyPossum True, yes they are twice size of Titanic but no ship today is over 100m longer yet (Keep cargo ships out of it 😂) so Titanic next to the symphony would be a very big difference but Titanic's length would still be a sight! The Queen Mary 1 is already long at like 312 meters at least, that isn't short length

Ocean Liners are really cool to me. Before the introduction of jet airlines, these were the absolute pinnacle for civilian maritime design, and the fastest way for international travel. It's almost a shame that their sleekness and efficiency would morph into modern cruise ships, bloated and ugly.

Yea I agree, there are few cruise ships I would consider good looking. Or even average looking. Most look so....... I dont know. Top heavy? Cramped? Overthetop in a bad sense? And yes, they look fat and bulky, and many are lacking a real stern. But hey, now they have like 40 cinemas, 50 malls, 100 water slides, and an infinite number of pools in all different sizes. And yes, I know those numbers are way over the top, I just think... Its a bit too much sometimes. And I say that as someone, who adores the old ocean liners, and their first class decorations

It was fun seeing ships I'd never even heard of, along with some greats. Although I read a lot about United States' hull design, I evidently didn't think to compare her to her contemporaries, because I just thought "My God she's LITTLE!" Little being entirely relative in this case. Your illustrations are enviably crisp and elegant.

I like to watch ships in the St. Lawrence Seaway between Canada and the United States, especially the locks at Massena and Iroquois. The ships look massive up close. Just huge. But, to put it in perspective: The S.S America would have comfortably fit into a 740 foot (SeawayMax) lock with room to spare, lengthwise, except she'd be 15 feet too wide and sat 6.5 feet too deep in the water. The Lusitania would have been 47 feet too long, 9 feet too wide, and 7 feet too deep to pass through a Seaway lock. The Titanic would have been 142.5 feet too long, 14.5 feet too wide, and 8 feet too deep to pass through a Seaway lock. The Queen Mary would have been an incredible 279.5 feet too long, 40 feet too wide, and 12.25 feet too deep to pass through a Seaway lock. That's a small ship in itself right there.
