Big Entangled Seal "Hides" Behind Baby Seals

A good strategy, but luckily it didn't work out for him. The entangled animal tries to hide behind a few seal pups to evade capture, but the OCN rescuers catch him anyway. He puts up a good fight by biting the hoop of our rescue net. Our seals do not know that we are coming to their help, they consider us dangerous and feel threatened. Unfortunately, we have no other option, this seal would have died without this traumatic experience, like so many other animals.
A piece of fishing line is removed, and the rescuers get to try out their new straps, we will definitely keep them in the rescue box. 🦭

I remember when all you had was one kinda flimsy orange net, the safety multi cutter, a knife, and a Tony. To see the arsenal and team evolve and become many MANY times more effective in such a short time lets me know just how important your work is and how many people also recognize this. We love you OCN!

Well with good binoculars, amazing team work, lots of experience, and a lot of luck.There are normally at least 3 rescuers scanning the same group of seals. Sometimes it is the body language of the seal that first catches our attention, often an entangled seal is very wary and skittish, presumably due to being in pain and unable to free itself of the entanglement. Sometimes it is the sunlight catching the tiny thread poking out from its neck. Once we have all focused on the seal and agreed that we believe there to be an entanglement one of us doesn't take their eyes off of it while the others prepare for the rescue. We often lose track of an individual in a large group of fleeing seals, but in most cases at least one person is able to guide the one with the net if need be.😉

I think he might have been rather a sweet, gentle male who stayed with the babies, when he could have saved himself. Sometimes you do get males who are unusually sweet with babies. I have a little male rescue cat, and he loves rescue feral kits. Unlike many cats, he will stay with them, cuddle up with them, and even let them suckle, despite being male. He just likes kits.

I wonder if they could make use of the 'fish bowl of shame?' Dog groomers use them. Like a round plastic fishbowl (horrible for fish), but it has holes drilled for breathing. So dog has it attached to collar and looks like an astronaut. So can't bite. Trouble is, seals don't have a neck as such, for collar, to keep it on. And to cover seal head, you would need a shape more like a very wide mouthed, super size long jar with holes drilled, and then sides would cover straps, etc. Maybe it could have access slices cut along sides, in 3 slices down length of 'jar,' to put through scissor or knife. Made out of perspex or somesuch.

Have you considered using muzzles? maybe work them into the net so they can be fixed from behind and detached from outside if you need them, while sticking to the net if you don't...
@OceanConservationNamibia
@OceanConservationNamibia 2 жыл бұрын
Nearly every seal would require a different size muzzle, and we would have to use our hands to slip the muzzle on over its mouth, it would take extra time to prep the animal for the rescue and there would be the scary chance of the seal escaping before we were able to remove it 😉

@@OceanConservationNamibia the different sizes could be an issue, but at least in my head there should be ways to solve the issues of using your hands and the seal escaping with it... - for the hands: the muzzle sits in the tip of the net, so if the seal is in the net, they are almost in the muzzle. now fixing the muzzle I don't know seals anatomy enough to really provide a solution, but one way could be to use loops (*see below) around the flippers? that way you could net the seal, then reach into the net from behind, fix the muzzle and work on the head... - seal escaping with the muzzle: this loops back to the loops (sorry)... a manual or even better, built in quick release to open the loops while retaining some anchor to the muzzle in case the seal gets too far away from the net I wish I could draw so I could send you some schematics what I'm thinking off... but if you're at least interested in the idea, please tell me, then I can wreck my head how to communicate it better ;)
