It's not about following the Brits but about looking smart. I've seen the Indian military and S. Korean military swinging their arms so high that it looked very odd. Malays are second largest in Singapore and Singapore has barely 1⅓ of Malaysia's population. So there's no surprise there are lesser Malays who are strong and are fighters here. And also don't get it wrong, there are still Malays who learn silat and serve in the military. Most 'strong' Malays serve in the S.O.C branch of Police. I know lots of 'weak' Malays in Malaysia too.
