Octatrack autopilot with Midi Loopback techniques

This tutorial teaches you a few techniques that I've picked up when using midi loopback with the Elektron Octatrack. To put it simply you connect the Octatrack to itself using a single midi cable and then control the behaviour of the Octatrack using the 8 available midi tracks.

There are two secret techniques to completing a rubik cube that not many people know about. 1 the stickers come off. 2 the blocks come out and can be reassembled in the desired arrangement. Stay safe.

Great job! Got an octatrack arriving over the next few days, so watching everything I can. The midi loopback, combined with elektron boxes having proper midi implementation is actually amazing.

This is the Nerdiest I’ve seen 👌👌 One is u make a complicated tutorial look simple and then u take Rubic and solve it in secs 😜🤪😜 Whatever one concentrated on the OT was completely lost following the Rubic cube 😂 Super 👌👌👌❤️

Awesome! This reminds me of how I use session view in Ableton. I'd set up MIDI tracks to send note/cc data to the IAC Driver (virtual midi bus on mac), and then loopback into ableton to map to a bunch of things. Cool to see it used here on the OT. Combining different settings together with the quick mutes is awesome. Can MIDI tracks listen to a MIDI channel like the audio tracks as well? I could see this technique going even further by controlling which MIDI track(s) are active and controlling audio tracks by having MIDI tracks listen to a channel (I.e. channel 3), and then one "master" MIDI track sending messages to channel 3 to orchestrate whether they are on/off.

I need to get me one so I can post up anywhere and jam my beats on the go. Lol. This machine keeps surprising me with its versatility. I would love to see how my beats sound going thru one of these devices. Separate the bass and the music and the drums and just go to town and jam. Lol Nice work bro. 😎👍🏽

mini binging your mind expanding content. Am I correct in assuming that a midi merge box would allow for loopback fun as well as any other midi in or out needs (eg controller on in, external synths and clock on out)

Makes me happy to read this 😊 you're right about that, so long as the midi message can travel from the Octatracks midi out and return via its midi in then it'll work. That way you can control the Octatracks with your controllers and the Octatrack itself. 👍

don't get me wrong, but midi loopback is an ugly hack that part of the elektronauts community copes with for some unholy reason. the sequencer in the device itself has to be more flexible.

at the very least it should be able to loopback programmatically, without a cable.

I couldn't agree more, it should be relatively easy to implement some virtual midi channels in order to use midi tracks with regular tracks without the need of a cable. But until then we don't really have much choice I guess 😔
