This tutorial teaches you 2 methods to perform vinyl scratches on the Octatrack. I often get asked how I do the scratching in my Octatrack performance videos and figured I should have a tutorial ready in response.
This is the first time I've done anything like this so I'm feeling a little vulnerable, usually I just perform music. Please let me know if this is something that you find interesting and would like more of. I'm still finding my feet with this whole KZfaq thing.

00:47 - Method One
03:01 - Method One Example

Drop me a like and a subscribe if you feel the need, it's nice to know that I'm not posting into the void.
Love,
Tiny.

Thanks Mike, good to hear from you again! The response has been very positive so I'm keen to keep doing videos about interesting techniques that I've come up with! That's amazing that you noticed me on MKTF! To be honest I only decided to submit something a week before it went live and only had the time to prepare one song (plus I was away from my beloved Octatrack 🤣)

Great vid. Thanks. I was about to set up a chopper, but now I'll add this as well. Peeling back the octaonion one layer at a time. Just have fun, and never mind anyone with negative comments or bs. Do it for yourself, and for the people who appreciate it. :)

I’ve just tried on my Octatrack , it’s so cool! I’ve kind of mixed your two methods: sliced my vocal sample in 16 slices, sequenced the slices I want to have the sounds trigged at the right moment, quantized to the beat and then I use the cross fader with scene B that put the rate at -64 and hp + lp filter. I have a similar scene but with the start point (which is the slice number in slice mode) linked to slice 16 so it can change the words in the sentence. Or I can use a lfo to randomize the slice number at every trig (or just on one trig in my sentence thanks to parameter lock). One thing important I’ve noticed: it works with Static Machines but it’s far smoother and you’ll get better results with a Flex Machine.
@tinygregmusic
@tinygregmusic 11 ай бұрын
That's a really nice way to approach it! I actually didn't try it with a flex track, I tend to ignore flex tracks 🙈, but that does make sense. I think I'll go try it in a minute! 😎

@@tinygregmusic Man!!! Your Octatrack videos are top notch! They are super refreshing. Very original and you talk about and show things that I haven’t seen in any other vids on KZfaq. Well done! I would love to see a video on how you creatively transition using scenes / patterns to break out of the dreaded 4 bar loop. What is your thought process regarding this? It would be cool to see a walkthrough of how you would approach constructing a full track on the Octatrack. Do you have tried and true techniques that help you when building specific sections of a song to be played live? Etc. etc. etc. Again. Super good stuff!

Trigless Lock I think. A p-lock without triggering the sample. Trigless Trig gets armed for one-shot recordings
@tinygregmusic
@tinygregmusic Жыл бұрын
You're right it's called a lock trig. A trigless trig is the same but it triggers the lfo and fx envelopes. The recording trigs are called one shot trigs. I wish they had better or more memorable names tbh... I'll never remember them all in time for the next video though 🤣

Very nice Being a scratch Dj I always tried to use the X fade on the OT to scratch and never really got acquired results I liked the first method Though I must admit the OT Xfader is not really made like a scratch mixer so I would use it seldom and only specifically Because for me the Xfader on the OT is the magical umbilical cord for scenes 😂 Thanks so much for the excellent tip 🙏🙏👌👌
@tinygregmusic
@tinygregmusic Жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment! That means a lot to me! Yes, scratching with the crossfader is just not the same... I'm probably not as good at scratching vinyl as you are but I've had some practise, but I miss the ability to just spin the vinyl and have it wind round and then pick up from wherever it lands. You can't do that with three Octatrack! But it is amazing how much other stuff we can do with just one little crossfader and some preparation! Please lookout for my next lot of videos coming this weekend

@@tinygregmusic what you did with the OT is far better than what I can with vinyl. The OT is a beautiful beast capable of far what one expected.
