No samples needed for this tutorial; the Octatrack can act as a rather fascinating synthesizer as long as you know how to get your hands on plenty of extra gain.
0:50 white noise generation
2:25 white noise amplitude envelope
3:06 filter pings
3:30 comb filter pings
4:31 excitation shaping
5:43 impulse modulation
7:16 noise shaping
8:26 chorus
9:40 additional triggers
11:36 additional comb filter
12:57 white noise waveform display
13:37 chorus modulation
14:17 comb filter detune modulation
15:04 distortion on excitation filter
16:00 different track lengths
16:47 re-sampling source
17:59 audio editor display quirk
19:11 panning modulation
20:08 lo-fi FX for re-sampling channel
21:04 excitation filter modulation
22:01 disabling excitation filter distortion
22:18 cue bus attenuation
22:55 mix change-up
23:45 re-sampling channel filter modulation
24:31 flanger on re-sampling channel
25:05 reducing comb feedback
26:22 closing remarks
note: sending a short burst of white noise into a tuned delay line with high feedback (i.e. a comb filter) is also often known as 'karplus-strong synthesis' and is frequently used to simulate bowed or plucked string sounds, such as guitar and violin

I learned synthesis, i learned signal path....it was really one of my more productive nights on the Octatrack. Thank you, sir... a wonderful experience. I hope you are well and look forward to more videos from you soon. I will also be going back through and following along with my machine on other videos. thank you again.

lot of cool things in that paper! it most definitely is very classic stuff! one thing I'd like to do with my channel is show how a lot of these very important and useful techniques are sometimes rather ancient - adding excessive gain to an unconnected input to produce audible noise is as old as the practice of electronic music itself, and I view the OT very much like digital tape

@maxmarco
@maxmarco 5 жыл бұрын
thanks a lot!! essentially everything I do on OT or MDUW is just a translation or extension of techniques and concepts I have already explored quite a bit with my modular setups, and I bought OT primarily to use as a 'super-module' paired with my main eurorack - have been meditating a bit recently on what I want the next configuration of that system to look like :D
@0Fdigital
@0Fdigital 5 жыл бұрын
@@maxmarco Ahh! I've gone the opposite way recently-I just started a small Eurorack setup (with Elements as my first module, as an extension of what I've been doing with the comb filter) with the intention of making a small instrument that I can control from the OT :D I'm guessing the Eurorack experience will get me even more into the idea of using my Elektron gear in a modular mindset, and vice versa.

@maxmarco
@maxmarco 5 жыл бұрын
thank you! I have plenty of white noise samples I could have used - I quite like the extra variation introduced by the continuous re-sampling though (and makes for a more interesting video). Also, for 'real' noise you would definitely want to use a thru machine and not a sample - my scenario is kind of in-between

i learn so many little tips from these videos it's incredible. no one else covers this kind of sound design on this machine. you are a hero. also that comb filtered noise sounds like Arthur Russel's Cello. I wonder if there is a karplus-strong element to it, maybe since you added delay or if the comb filter just does that on it's own. anyway, thank you for your service
@maxmarco
@maxmarco 4 жыл бұрын
this particular application of a comb filter is essentially identical to Karplus-Strong synthesis - Arthur Russell's heavy use of processing/FX definitely brings his sound closer to these electronic emulations. It's also quite likely he used a variety of similar techniques that would create similar tones - high feedback with a flanger, phaser, chorus, frequency shifter, and a bunch of other time-based FX and using a harmonically rich input signal will tend to generate broadly similar sounds
@christdolphin69
@christdolphin69 3 жыл бұрын
@@maxmarco thanks for the response. are you aware of any hardware tools that provide that sort of processing? particularly Frequency Shifting? or any that you use yourself? i find most of those very useful in ableton, especially ableton's stock effects when manipulating my field recorded material to bring out new more alien textures from organic sources but i would like to be able to do it without plugins if possible. I just got the T Resonator, which might cover a lot of this. I had the mutable warps in the psat, which was great for creative vocoding/ring mod/cross mod/fm/bitcrushing, but i prefer non-euro stuff. one thing i never really found was a frequency shifter. there's gotta be at least a guitar pedal that does it well i also had no idea that russell used a lot of effects. that makes sense though. thank you again for the insight

Octatrack is pretty crazy for modulation - 3 LFOs per audio track, 3 LFOs per MIDI track for 48 total LFOs - doesn't quite have a fully abstracted mod matrix but is very flexible and incredibly powerful - it's a bit hard to describe all of what's possible, especially once you factor in some of the more advanced techniques I have covered on my channel such as MIDI loopback, which gives you pretty crazy modulation possibilities (but requires some solid knowledge to excecute ofc)

What's the advantage of keeping the original FLEX track recording, instead of just getting the initial sample and going from there?
@maxmarco
@maxmarco 5 жыл бұрын
a sample of noise is a static thing and isn't 'true' noise - to get true noise you would want to use a thru machine (or a very particular setup of a flex machine that was not covered in this video) - a continuously refreshing sample of 'real' noise that is always re-triggered from the beginning is somewhere in between, and introduces an interesting type of variation which I remark on a bit in the narration to elaborate further, probably the most convenient way on the Octatrack to produce a sample of noise is to record the inputs and then normalize the recording

the only track I've released so far (in a very different style) that uses only noise and filter resonance/feedback for all of the sound design is 'Abrasions' - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/lbCUqJN53NiUnHk.html - although I have used these types of comb filter techniques in some way or another in almost all of the solo Octatrack productions I've published so far, often quite heavily; it's much easier for me to name the OT compositions I've published where I (probably) haven't used the comb filter :D

glad you like it! I did re-use some of this audio to generate background music on at least one other video but I haven't made a 'proper' track out of these ideas yet

does this work with the headphone out? i was doing it step by step like you did but it doesnt seem to work... any tips?

the headphone output of Octatrack simply outputs the main, the cue, or a mix of both - it really doesn't have anything to do with this technique, unless maybe by accident you are monitoring the cue and not the main, and once you set up re-sampling from the cue like I do in the later portion of this video you'd probably want to set the headphone mix to be only the main output so you don't hear the cued tracks mixed in

max marco I tried doing everything you did step by step. I’ll have to try again but just do the main outputs and if by chance it does work on headphones I’ll put it just on main out. I got an Octatrack mainly because of your videos and my music making needs you’re so educated on this instrument and it really inspired me. If for some reason it doesn’t work again could we have a 1-on-1 and you could help me out?

Sorry, I can't afford to offer pro-bono lessons or consultations, particularly as that time is best spent making videos that can benefit potentially thousands of people at once. Generally speaking most new users are making very simple/subtle mistakes and it can often take quite some time to figure that out. Sometime in the next month or so I will be officially launching my Patreon - www.patreon.com/maxmarco (as you can see, it is already 'soft-launched') - where I am offering a couple slots for once-per-month 1-hour 1-on-1 lessons/consultations, and currently the 'carry-out' patronage tier (sample packs and project files) actually grants access to the Octatrack project file that I ended up with at the end of filming this video. I will be publishing lots more sample packs, Octatrack project files, and other related goodies to my Patreon over time

there's a mysteron in the OT??
@maxmarco

Makenoise Mysteron is a digital waveguide algorithm and is far more complex on many levels although my impression is that it almost certainly using one or more tuned digital delay lines (i.e. comb filters) - the Octatrack simply gives direct access to tuned comb filtering in its most basic form
