to help analyze both basic and more advanced operation of the Octatrack compressor a technique for setting up a continuously re-sampling buffer of the main outputs to gain access to a crude oscilloscope is demonstrated, and a quirk of the master track implementation is exploited to provide a convenient shortcut to this waveform display

This is an awesome trick both for understanding the OT's compressor and then be able to use it as it best, thanks man!!!

Amazing stuff, thank you! Finally I understood how to do distortion and saturation on OT properly, as the standard lofi module distortion doesn’t sound as good as it should. LFOs on attack and decay is also a great idea, adds an instant groove. 2:37 AM and your video dragged me out of bed to spend an hour tweaking the compressor, haha.

haha, awesome!! the lo-fi effect has various problematic aspects to it and imo is to be used very cautiously - it really won't maintain the integrity of the audio at all - I don't tend to use it often but sometimes it's fun

Another excellent video. Great to see the compressor get some love. I think most of us in the age of plugins are just to used to program compressors and brick wall devices. Which are immediately plausible. I think i understand the compressor a lot more now. Thanks for this one!

I find that the compressor has very wide parameter ranges - once I've dialed it in I'm usually only moving parameters a few ticks in each direction at the most, as even just 1 increment of a parameter when you're sitting on a sweet spot can change things up very dramatically!

always easier to hear compression with highly dynamic signals - OT compressor is rather 'brute force' though, making it extremely effective for sound design, and I find to really dig into that aspect requires getting a feel for how it shapes the sound when using the rather static audio sources that are generally produced in a sample-based production context

I have been watching a lot of your videos lately, and they are all quite good. Thanks so much! I did want to mention, I've heard you say 'parallel compression' a couple times, and I don't think it means what you think it means. If you really think you're doing parallel compression somehow, I'd be interested in a video explaining it. Keep up the great work!
@maxmarco
@maxmarco 5 жыл бұрын
thank you, but you may be thinking of a specific style or technique of parallel compression (such as the term 'New York compression' - there are some other I believe also) - all 'parallel compression' means is that you are mixing a compressed version of a signal with the uncompressed version of the signal - whenever you have the Octatrack compressor at a mix value below 127 you are mixing in some of the uncompressed signal and you are now doing parallel compression
@thetanil3702
@thetanil3702 5 жыл бұрын
@@maxmarco i see. i usually think of it as making some decision about what part of the signal being compressed. meaning, you have to split the signal in some way and compress only some parts. in any case, keep em coming :)
@maxmarco
@maxmarco 5 жыл бұрын
although I agree what you describe is 'parallel' in a sense of having multiple versions of the same signal (to get technical any time you use any sort of aux send bus you are doing parallel processing) the instant you do anything other than simply compress or not compress there is generally going to be a different term used than 'parallel compression' (which is a rather simple scenario and is frequently combined with other compression techniques) - for example if you filter/split the signal into frequency ranges and individually compress the frequency ranges that is generally referred to as 'multi-band compression' (i.e. frequency range dependent compression)

Great info as usual. I just recently purchased and mki and I'm loving the compressor. It is a great tool for sculpting a sound but also to reduce dynamics...using an lfo is a great way of making it alive. It would be nice if you show the audio before starting the tweaking as I thought it all was a loop recorded in a single track while at the end it seems the loop is made from different samples :) keep it up!

When I was trying this tonight I got a solid white line right through the middle of the record buffer playback window, as well as a solid white arrow beneath the playback line in rec setup. Any idea what I'm doing wrong? Thanks ...
@maxmarco
@maxmarco 5 жыл бұрын
are you starting with a brand-new project? I always recommend to start from a blank project to have all settings at a known default state to track down issues - it's easy to run into problems attempting to retrofit existing projects even with a thorough understanding of OT
@jdking005
@jdking005 5 жыл бұрын
@@maxmarco yes brand new blank project. The line and white arrow don't move (the way the line and black arrow move during regular buffer playback), they stay stationary. I'm doing your resample synthesis method as well as the oscilloscope on master track (after I changed it to flex machine). White noise and resample tracks work and visualize as expected
@CharlieBayTube

That waveform shortcut doesn't work on MK2. Rec Edit is under REC3 so you need to press Func + Rec 3 and afterwards select "EDIT THIS RECORDING". If you hold Track number and press REC3, it will start the recording, instead of showing you the waveform
@maxmarco
@maxmarco 4 жыл бұрын
iirc the audio editor waveform shortcut of track button + bank/edit button worked when I used a mk2, but maybe you are referring to a different shortcut? my experience with using mk2 is that none of the original button combo shortcuts were altered/removed, they simply added additional ways to navigate
@CharlieBayTube
@CharlieBayTube 4 жыл бұрын
@@maxmarcothanks, I just learned by accident that a simple press of AED button on MK2 will take me to the waveform page. That's even better when you can do it with just one finger ;)
@maxmarco
@maxmarco 4 жыл бұрын
It's a bit of an improvement but you still have to hit two buttons if you want to go to the waveform view of a different track than the currently active track. The track button + bank/edit button shortcut is also useful even on mk2 for when you are in the record setup menu - it takes you to the waveform view of the record buffer instead of the waveform for the default sample assigned to that track
