Imagine being the 15th generation of crewman upon a pilgrimage ship inside the warp. You have spent your entire life not even knowing what reality looks like, the entirety of your existence being of bulkheads and engines. Until one day, when the impossible occurs, and your ship enters the holiest of star systems, the work of your entire bloodline is nearly achieved. Then the ship is promptly vaporized by a passing frigate from Battlefleet Solar, because your ship failed to follow some obscure protocol. Welcome to Warhammer 40,000.

@Lord Admiral Spire Seeing as some ships will arrive before they even left. I'd say it's not beyond possibility. This is the warp after all. Logic and generality went out the window back when the old ones and the necrons decided to wage a war great and horrible enough to warp an entire dimension of emotions and souls into a self sustaining tortures nightmare.

And you don't want security over terra? Or do you just want to lock the civilians, even those affluent or capable enough to move, to not go where they wish? Even if the IoM was Atheist idiots like this would still be flooding terra. Just the excuse would be one your own sensabilities would deem ok, despite the death toll possibly being higher as the people have less reverence and more arrogance as they approach.

I have heard that a cup of coffee costs £20 and you have to queue for hours to get it. Total ripoff. All the holy terra merchandise can be got at a fraction of the price on Mars where they make most of the stuff anyway.

The overly exagerated description of the scale of that gate makes me rather tempted to build a replica of it in Unity and go visit it in VR. He gave pretty clear dimensions of it's height as being half a kilometre tall. Everything else I can just extend it's dimensions to go on infinitely into an unlit space and call it accurate. Warhammer makes grandiose description and fanatical exaggeration an art form. It's always been interesting to see how effective it is at captivating people.

the mental image of there being so many pilgrims that they act more like a liquid then a mass of people, matching across plazas and passways the size of seas, hacking out prayers and hymns as their lungs melt in the toxic air and their flesh sloughs off the bone from diesease, still uttering nonsensical incantations as they crumble and die on the street before getting crushed to thin red slime by the endless tide of plague-ridden zealots who are too riled up in religious fever to notice is visceral.

What's actually amazing is that this stuff happens in real life too. Not to lower the sanctity of such acts but St. Jerome the Translator of the bible from Greek and Aramaic to Latin Vulgate made a pilgrimage at the end of his life to the actual manger of Christ. There he laid his head upon the resting crib of infant Jesus and died. St. Benedict patron of Europe, was near his death due to sickness and called his servants to take him to receive communion and after with the aid of his servants holding his arms to the sky and saying prayers, died.

The Eternity Gate is so badass that the few people who get to look at it fall over dead in awe? I guess that's an appropriate way to end a religious pilgrimage. This is a great video, and as an Adeptus Custodes fan, it gives me a lot of perspective on just how busy the Ten Thousand have to be in guarding the enormity of the Imperial Palace, to say nothing of monitoring the whole Solar System.

New to Warhammer 40K, and I have to say this is exactly what I've been looking for in this series. Also you do a great job orating this. It feels like I'm a student in a vast library being told what to expect by an Elder. I can't wait for more.

They aren't just guarding the two jump points, there are heavy defenses covering the entire system with enough fire power to vaporize planets

I had only half heard of Warhammer before I watched this the first time. I once had an old roommate and friend who would sometimes be hired to paint miniatures, but I never paid the subject any mind. But something about the title captured my attention, maybe the recognition of the name mixed with a youth spent draped in Catholicism and terms like pilgrimage and holy. Your voice though... your voice stole my focus for 40 minutes. My imagination exploded with all the horrible and marvelous possibilities of a world teaming with life and misery and scale. That was about 2 years ago, and the breadth and scope of the verse still holds my attention like little else before it. Thank You.

After a long night of grinding on an MMO, I wanted something nice and calming to sleep to, so I popped this video on. I think I went 17 minutes in before dozing off. As so many others have said, please don’t take this as a way of saying this is boring, far from it: your passionate, yet calming oration of the grim darkness of the far future is a treat for the ears, and using the best 40k artwork makes it a feast for the eyes also.

This makes me simultaneously relieved and sad that I'll never see anything like the Imperial Palace. It's a horrific, continent-sized monstrosity populated by frenzied zealots, ten-foot tall immortal super-soldiers and billions of chronically overworked laborers and paper-pushers but the way Oculus describes it makes it sound eerily beautiful.

A good book to read if you wanna immerse yourself in Holy Terra is the Carrion Throne by Chris Wraight. Easily the best depiction of the setting I've ever seen.
