Let's take a look at some of the odd things that we saw in the AFL Round 1 games. Still plenty of odd things that happened in our game this week. What is your favourite oddity??

West coast player ran completely out of bounds and went on to score a goal. Todd Marshall managed to hit the exact top of the goal post Couple Farrell long bombs in that game too Did you forget about that game? Haha

boundary umpire had a throw recalled and then did a similar shit throw that was just called play on, 5 seconds later another throw in was called and the other boundary umpire came to throw it 😅 Also there was a mark about 55m from Ports goal that was questionably 50, depending who you go for, but when the ump said "no" he handballed it to Farrel and he bombed a goal from 60, but the umpire called it back for some reason and it resulted in a behind instead

5:45 not how holding the ball works. Check the rule book If he has no prior and makes a genuine attempt to dispose, it's not HTB. Whether he legally disposes or not. Way too many people who don't understand this rule and complain about calls or non-calls that are 100% correct

Yeah as a Cats fan on the night I thought it was HTB, but you've summed it up perfectly, geniune attempt by dropping it for a kick (he just got tackled as he got kicked) so it's not HTB

hundred percent correct here, i hear so many calls for HTB when I’m watching and theyre more or less like this, and when it doesnt get pinged (as it shouldnt) people are outraged

@@goldcoastsuns877 i think they need prior opportunity to get rid of it, as i guess if a person gets the ball and instantly tries to throw it on boot, but get tackled, theres not much else they couldve done, as the moment they had an opportunity to get rid of it, they actually tried to

Bull, you missed the Port vs West Coast game where a West Coast player clearly went out of bounds in the forward 50, yet faced no umpire call then proceeded to kick to his mate for a goal.

5:44 wasn't a "missed" call, it simply isn't HTB as per footy laws.

Surprised the free kick to Dangerfield when he dug his knees into Stocker wasn't mentioned. Stocker was clearly fighting to be first to the ball and didn't have any intention to specifically take out the legs, which is why the rule exists. Even the commentators thought the free was going the other way.

The problem with the 50m penalty now is it's completely disproportionate to the crime being committed. Situations like 4:10 where players are unfairly punished for barely even minor infractions and are given no opportunity to remedy their action. It happens at least once a game and more often than not gifts a team with a free goal and it's makes this great game look amateur. Solution: Remove the 'stand' rule and go back to what worked for, well, forever since the 50m penalty was introduced. Either that or reduce it to 25m because it's simply too punitive for the infraction it is.

I actually reckon that the stand rule is great... makes heaps of sense and IMO simplifies what was unnecessarily intricate. Also the 50m should be a tough penalty, I don't reckon that 25m is tough enough. Although I do agree their application of the 50m penalties isn't consistent or accurate enough

good vid mate, there was a tackle on nick daicos by ollie florent and he through his head backwards into his lap after hed been taken to ground and it was called a high tackle, should that along with the sicily flop cop a fine?

5:44 that's not holding the ball, the player has not had any prior opportunity, and the ball was knocked away in the tackle while the player was trying to dispose of the ball legitimately. If the player has taken any steps, or broken a tackle prior, then they've had prior opportunity, making it dropping the ball.

You're allowed to drop the ball of you're in the middle of kicking it. Umpire changed that rule about 4 years ago.

Yet he threw it into the middle of the ground rather than to the boundary...? good attempt trying to cover for him I guess? Also as Mr Holding-the-Bull points out Myers should know that it's a penalty for throwing away other player's possessions, we saw it heaps last year with trackers, goggles and even boots if I remember correctly

Missed one in the Essendon vs Hawthorn game where Menzie has a set shot and shanks it badly, then the ball stays in and I think it was Amon shanks it straight back to Archie Perkins

appreciate you calling out the maynard deliberate rushed behind thing not being called considering it was identical to what broad did last week yet broad was pinged. it’s never paid and it’s clear the umps haven’t decided to be more strict on it so the only difference i can spot is the yellow and black on the guernsey 🤷‍♂️ also that mansell miss is still gut wrenching 😭😭😭

From the rules (p.g. 55): "18.11.2 Free Kicks - Deliberate Rushed Behinds A field Umpire shall award a Free Kick against a Player from the Defending Team who intentionally Kicks, Handballs or forces the football over the Attacking Team’s Goal Line or Behind Line or onto one of the Attacking Team’s Goal Posts, and the Player: (a) is greater than nine metres from the Goal Line or Behind Line" The goal square extends 9m from the goal line and Maynard was in the goal square when he rushed it. Last week was the wrong call.

The one at 4:00 has to be fifty as he definitely ran over the mark. Tom Green marked and had already taken a couple steps back from his mark, yet Curtis was able to catch up to him and stand right in front of him (i.e, he went over the mark). He can't be called back as he was not in the contest so it's a fifty.

Not sure why Rowbottom’s run down of DeGoey wasn’t mentioned clear missed HtB. At the game Rowbottom acted on the umpires call, which was too quick but it was a reaction to the call.

4:13 Should the umpire have signaled time-on? Historically I feel when players lined up for goal, umpires would blow the whistle to stop the clock to prevent time wasting, and blow time back on just before the kick is taken.

I do not know if that was visible on the TV but Todd Marshall was lining up for a shot on goal and it hit the top of the goal post which was pretty funny. Also, Harley Reid ran off the mark and Ryan burton played on and kicked a goal but it was brought back because Harley ran off the mark, can someone explain how this wasn't called play on or a 50-meter penalty.

The Sicily incident shouldn’t have been a free kick to Essendon anyway and a mark to Sicily. Umpires completely favoured Essendon the whole game. 100’s of oddities that game if it’s bad umpire decisions as they never paid holding the ball for us

@@ItsFalloutz yeah, but the better team didn’t win, Essendon were sloppy and ultimately the umpires won them the game, the only actual player on their team that played well was 2 metre Peter. They played sloppy and didn’t deserve shit

@@raccoonproductions7578 Stringer kicked 4 goals, McGrath had 33 disposals at 85% efficiency, Perkins had 24 disposals, 2 goals and 12 tackles. Essendon had 6/9 of the top players in disposals, the amount of mental gymnastics you're doing is incredible.

You didnt mention any, but all the free kicks paid against the D's, were utter BULLsh1t....... ( if you want to get to 10K quicker, than the other bloke.... do a "name and shame", where you call out all the players faking, and dirty tactics !!!! It will catch on .....)
