I do actually think they believed they were on track to hit the winter 2014 deadline for Mother 4(or at least close), but the whole rebrand screwed that up. A while ago one of the people who used to work on it came out and revialed on twitter how the rebrand hurt the development. A lot the people involved weren't exactly enthusiastic about the decisions and the things it could mean for the development of the game. Some were upset that they weren't working on a mother fan game any more, and some were worried about what it could mean for potentially monetizing the game. Although the project leads claim they'd keep it free there was still debate about if they should or not especially with how much work everyone put into it and some people thinking some kind of compensation would be nice. Regarless, a lot of the volunteers involved in the development jumped ship for their own reasons. That coupled with the huge undertaking that is going back and changing a lot of their already finished work probably slowed the already slow development to a crawl or even at times a complete hault. One of the reasons they gave for the rebrand was the mother IP being too limiting(not sure how true that is), but that also might imply the scope of the project could have changed. It's really hard to tell what really is going on at any one moment in time because updates are so few and far between, but the project is still likely being worked on. I think their most recent tweet is just a "hey we didn't forget about this game" kind of thing. I really hope it's hinting at an announcement in the near future, but honestly with how the development of this game has been going I doubt it :/.

It's 50/50, game development is a really difficult thing. The developers were very new to game design and thought things were going to be smooth with the development - however it got really complicated. 2014 was a really early release date and they missed it by a longshot, couple that with numerous leaks and developer indrama and you have a recipe for what is a really fucked development cycle. Something VERY similar happened with Omori - it was intended to come out in 2014-2015, however the release date was pushed back to 2020, dangerously close to 2021. Keep in mind Omori had an engine already up and running thanks to RPGMaker, while Oddity/Mother 4 is using an engine custom made from the ground up. Along with that Mother 4 has been redone from scratch multiple times, I wouldn't be surprised if the Oddity rebrand also represents yet another development restart, with years of content being scrapped and redone completely. That Alpha is simply that - an alpha, they did lie but I don't think it was malicious - rather a bunch of teenagers thinking they could make something cool and get attention for it, yet bit off WAY more than they could chew. The thing with alphas and games is that they usually suck until they're around 80% complete, look at any of Half Life 2's leaked maps which were intended for e3 demonstrations, if the person recording the video for those e3 documentations even went slightly off course you'd see absolutely nothing, but a simple void. The phystown showcase for the game's physics was heavily scripted and basically lied through it's teeth in order to showcase what the team had hoped to accomplish. Plenty of bugs and glitches - look at Duke Nukem Forever's 2001 leaked build as well, or literally any leaked build of in-development games at the time and you'll see most games lie in their trailers to drum up hype, it's a very common practice. I think Oddity/Mother 4 exists, the pants twitter thread is likely for an announcement that might come potentially soon, patience is key, this is also a free project which boggles my mind, I don't think they'd keep up something like this for close to a decade now if it was a scam or ploy for attention, as none of the developers have asked for a single cent from the community. If Oddity never comes out I doubt I'd lose much sleep over it, we know so little about the game other than two really cool trailers, however I do hope Shane keeps to his word for releasing everything they've made if Oddity indeed does get cancelled.

Mother 4/ Oddity never really existed as a game, it was always just a bunch of nice looking assets When you look at the leaked builds you can see that most if not all of the content in them are just the content that was being shown in trailers/teasers, there wasn’t really much that we haven’t already seen, even the artist who made the art in the 2020 trailer admitted that she made said art only a few days before release of the trailer (sorry I can’t find the exact source), so yeah the game was stuck in vaporware hell Here’s what I think happened : a bunch of artists without much experience in game dev wanted to make a mother 4, they made a bunch of nice looking art assets and a bit of simple code, they greatly underestimated just how much time and effort game dev takes, since the game is a non profit hobby project they’d get busy with work/school, voluntary development + Development hell are a terrible combo, so yeah the game wasn’t being worked on but they didn’t want the project to die so every few years they’d make a bunch of assets in a few days and pump put a trailer to keep the illusion that there’s a game, but the game will absolutely never come out if they keep doing this, in all honesty I don’t think they’re ever gonna continue working on it, I feel like the group chat that the devs would communicate to each other in probably hasn’t had a message in months, there’s no game dev going on
