The tour of the orange packing house made my eyes bug out at least a foot and turned me bright green with envy. It has me wishing for one of my own -- a fully furnished and equipped turnkey version, of course -- that I could simply walk in and occupy. Given a choice between owning and living in the castle and the packing house, I'd take the latter in a heartbeat.

Interesting. This is more interesting than the castle. All the wild stuff and stories. Love Eisenhower getting caught on the elevator. You guys are doing great since you started getting out again. Thumbs up

How freaking COOL! Scott seems like a fascinating person, what an upbringing. Thank you two for all these amazing, awesome, cool, and for me bitter sweet videos! I'm so glad to have left LA, but my heart holds a big space for it. You really don't know how much these mean to lil' old me. God bless you kids.

How fascinating! I've always been leery of walk-in refrigerators so I don't know how comfortable I would be sleeping in one. Certainly unique, though.

In the 60s & 70s Michael would wake up around 2am, when we had guests sleeping in the Packing House, and make sure all the refrigerator doors weren't closed all the way. He worried about oxygen levels in those rooms.

How fascinating that the Tin Palace once existed as an orange packing house in a former life! Besides being served by trucks, was this old packing house also served by trains in the past? I ask because most Southern California citrus packing houses had their own railroad sidings to ship their fruit by train.

What an interesting place. One nice thing about the refrigerators being used as bedrooms could be that they are well insulated. Lol.

While there, you were just a few miles away from the Singer house. Where the family of the original Singer Sewing machine lived.

Arthur Bourne's mansion was a very short walk from he packing house. There is another large house above the Castle in the foothills that was also built by Bourne. Bourne's grandfather was the 5th president of Singer Sewing Co., and made the business "perhaps the first modern multinational industrial enterprise of any nationality". Was Michael Rubel, the boy who worked for Mr. Bourne, inspired by the fact that Bourne's family had a castle at Dark island in New York? One of the influences we may never know.

Nicely done, Huell Howser didn't take us there. Perhaps back then the family was still living there.
@RubelCastleCalifornia
@RubelCastleCalifornia 2 жыл бұрын
Huell's first visit was 1990 and by that time nobody was living full time in the Tin Palace. To keep his episode at ten minutes, he decided (much like Drew & Bethany did) to not cover the interiors. Huell returned in 2011 and covered it all with a half hour episode.

I live in a large home for our small Island, but it's not big enough for all I own (I used to live in my own place, once I moved back home I had to put most of my things in storage), so I'd love nothing better than to build my own place 🏚
