I've stumbled upon people online who are against the public domain in the wake of Steamboat Willie becoming part of it, with their arguments being that it would ruin their original creators' intent and theming of its stories and characters with elements that make little to no sense for them and would open the floodgates for reactionaries to maintain/enhance whatever problematic themes it had to counter those who want to address and dismantle them with their own versions of those IPs.

I think to be against the public domain because of one contribution of material goes against it's entire spirit

I also think because IPs that are in the public domain don't need to be altered, they are altered less than someone trying to avoid a copyright claim
