Common problem from 1999 - 2002 GMC/Chevy Trucks with the odometer/gear shift all in one display. check the solder connections on the pins for the display, these can crack causing an intermittent flicker and eventually nothing on the display. In my case, it was just a loose / dirty connection at the top of the cluster. The circuit board was also really dirty so I cleaned it as best as I could. That combined with a shot of dielectric grease to the pin connector fixed my problem. The truck was flooded at the end because i was fooling with the ignition a lot without running the engine. Thanks for watching.

I just had this exact problem with the odometer display on my 1999 GMC Sierra and have some good information that may help someone out. The pin on the LCD board referred to in your video as the common pin is actually positive DC voltage that powers the LCD. This pin feeds three power resistors in parallel so this probably carries significant current. The resistors were ok but I could see they had been running hot since the circuit board around the resistors was turning dark. Once I lifted the LCD circuit board up I saw right away the pin had de-soldered from the circuit board. You won't see this, nor can you re-solder it, without lifting the board from the white plastic support. I re-soldered the pin and that took care of the problem. One other thing I want to mention is the circuit board with all the lamps and the LCD does not just lift off. It has to be carefully pried off of the connector pins that go to the gauges. Once you get it free there is a small harness that feeds the driver info display that can be unplugged so you can check the LCD. I didn't use any grease on any of the connectors. Relatively easy fix.

I have a 99 Sierra with the same problem. Pulled the cluster, took a look, and sprayed the plug with WD40 and blew it out. Plugged it all back together and it works just like new. Thanks for the Help!

Intermittent blower motor issue and "solution" for me. I have had the same problem for years (2000 Silverado). Here's what I do: Turn on the truck and the AC fan. Under the dash, directly below the center of the glovebox, there is a wiring harness. Slip your hand up from the floorboard behind the A/C ducting. Wiggle the wires. Blower comes back on. I've done that for about 8 years now. I should find the loose wire and actually fix it, but I'm lazy. Really. I'm very lazy. I'm so lazy that I mostly ignore the problem except when my wife is in the car. I've taught her how to find the wire, and she does it.

Akuba Manu I did the same but as soon as it dried out it lost connection again. I had to solder it and yes when i bent the display back to have access it broke another solder joint. All the solder joints are weak compared to what i put on it after i was done. :D Yup the dealership wanted about $600 and i fixed it with a little bit of solder and time.

larry tanton You are correct. As soon as the wd40 dried out, the light was off again. Did you solder all of the joints or just the one he referred to in the video is loose? Also, how long did it take you to solder the joints. Thanks for the information.

Great video! Just repaired my 2001 Suburban 1500 gear shift indicator display. I had the same issue. The display would work on and off randomly. Then eventually stopped working all together. Also appreciate the 7mm socket size reference and pointing out the suspected soldier joint that typically has issue. I had to look really hard at the soldier joints to finally see the lack of soldier on the top pin. The vehicle mileage was never effected during my repair.

I used air duster on the LED after removing the panel on my 01 chevy. Also on your blower motor check your clip between the truck and the blower motor. Mine had melted so I had to occasionally tap or kick the motor to make it go. Ultimately replaced it and hard wired the blower motor. But hell yeah on the advice for the cluster! Works like a charm now!

Love the blue display, i think they are often a really bright green with a thick blue plastic filter in front. Looks much like the types used on vcr's and some dvd players, there are filiments that must have power applied, in the dark you can see a faint red glow on the horizontal wires, with no filter. Looks like you sorted it without selling a kidney for parts money :-)

you can bend the screen to the left by picking up on the right side and bending the pins. Check all the pins and make sure they are soldered completely. I sprayed white grease on the blue connector and have not had an issue since then.

121214: you did a man size job there. i figured when you examined the solder, you would have found an intermittent solder (cracked-solder, cold-solder, or broken solder joint). if the problem happens again you might want to re-solder all suspect solder joints. Use a magnifying glass to help see the solder joints. Hope this helps
@WinnfieldCustoms
@WinnfieldCustoms 11 жыл бұрын
Yes, I'm going to guarantee you that #1 pin is your problem, it shouldn't move at all. You should be able to bend that board to the left with no problem. If a solder joint breaks when doing this then it should have been re-soldered anyway. Thanks for the comment!

Shouldve seen the display in my dad's 03 duramax gmc. Started out just flashing at startup, then it would quit working till it warmed up, then it started doin all sorts of weird shit. It would go haywire, sometimes the odometer would work sometimes not, you would have to bang on it to get it working sometimes. Finally went out today, he had to order a new one.

Hi there, I had a quick question about your notifcation at the end of the video stating you put white grease on the electrical connector before replacing the cluster back in the dash. Was this white lithium grease? or dielectric grease? I've only known dielectric to come in tubes not spray and i've never heard it refered to as white grease, it does in fact help insulate electrical connections but im not sure lithium would help. Just curious. Good job, i need to take a look at mine as well. -James

I have an '02 Suburban, and my problem is similar. The gear LCD and warning lights work fine, but the speedometer and all of the gage, and radio lights just stopped working (just the lights), after blinking on and off, sometimes. I think it's a common problem, and not the fuse. I'll play with the dimmer switch, and it might come back on. But last night, it wouldn't. People say the dimmer switches are bad, even new ones, and you have to run a jumper wire to the dimmer switch wire. Anyone have this issue? BTW, can you show what exact spray you used on the connector, and how?
