I'm experimenting with rye these days. The two I've started with are Sagamore Spirit and Bulleit, both of which use MGP juice. At first I found nothing in them but leaves and minerals, but as they've interacted with air they've grown considerably. I'm looking forward to continuing the experiment. 🥃

I was definitely disappointed with Whistlepig Rye, especially for the price… And especially compared to Bulliet rye which is amazing and opened my eyes to the whole category of rye. Perfect choice for number one!

I concur. Especially considering the standard orange label Bulliet is, in my humble opinion, gross as fuck. I don't know what it was but it was almost undrinkable to me, and I'll drink almost anything. Now of course I finished the bottle, cause I payed good money for it, but yeesh. But the green label 95 rye is damn good for what it is. And now I've learned about it's sourcing from MGP which I've never even heard of before.

Willett 3 year is my favorite beverage of any kind. Whistle Pig 6 is a close second. I’ve had bullies rye but was before I really sipped whiskey, so I don’t remember much. I hate that you were disappointed

Currently taking a bath with mint, eucalyptus, and lavender. While drinking New Riff rye. The chart scene came on so I started trying to sniff out the different scents and I smelled the oils from the bath but it also smelled like some of the components from the rye. I was like holy crap the similarities.

I kind of put rye in 2 categories. The traditional Pennsylvania/Maryland style, and a Kentucky style which has more corn in the mash bill than the 95% rye types.

Rittenhouse is probably one of my favorite Rye whiskeys I've tried so far. The first taste of it reminded me of the smell of an early cold November morning in the middle of the woods getting ready to deer hunt with my dad as a child. The smell of the dirt and the cold air.

In Canada the whiskey on the gun at the bars is rye. Most ordered cocktail is likely rye and coke if it isn't a vodka drink.

Can't agree more that the 95/5 mash bill is the quintessential. However my favorite rye is the LAWS Cask San Luis Valley Rye. It's non-typical but sooo good.

I am a Rye not Bourbon drinker and Michter's Rye is one of my top five favorites. I find Whistlepig inconsistent but do like some of their special barrels with Port, Sauterine etc. MGP...Rossville. I do love some Willette (mmm Blackened)Rabbit Hole, Four Gate, Three Chord ... And a partridge in a pear tree. Merry Christmas!

Hey Whiskey Tribe! Hardcore RYE LOVER over here. I recently discovered and fell in love with this channel. My only disappointment has been your complete lack of appreciation for my favorite spirit. You guys desperately need a rye lover to help you guys out with recommendations. Now this isn't the worst list I've ever heard of, but most of these are either super bourbon-forward, or just not impressive, except for Bulleit, Rittenhouse and Whistle Pig. In addition, these would actually be at the BOTTOM of my list, followed by: 5. Redemption Rye 4. High West Rendezvous Rye (My personal favorite) 3. James E Pepper 1776 Rye 2. High West Double Rye! 1. Knob Creek Single Barrel Select Rye I've never had the pleasure of trying Willett Single Barrel Rye, but I've heard it's pretty delicious and quintessential as well. As I was saying, if there's a job opening for a Rye Whiskey Sommelier with a little bit of bartending experience, I'd love to help you guys out. Cheers to fighting, stealing, and drinking! For a much better, less wimpy (Sorry Bulleit) example of MGP 95/5 rye I can’t recommend the Stellum rye enough, specifically the single barrel picks. Rich spicy, bright, citrusy, thick & syrupy and strong at cask strength. Widely available and only about $45-55. Amazing stuff.

I prefer ryes when backpacking in the high Sierra, as the elevation mutes the taste buds, Rittenhouse BIB is a great rye for drinking at 10,000+ feet, and very affordable. My favorite rye at any elevation and the only one my wife will drink is Cali Riptide Rye. Strong, smooth, and you don't taste the ethanol despite the high proof.

just tried Bulleit...both the rye and the bourbon. much preferred the bourbon. not a surprise for me, but I was surprised by how much I liked the bourbon. it's quite good and at a great price

Wild Turkey 101 rye whiskey is a nice rye. It has a spicy taste that does not disappoint, or disappear when on the rocks. A good rye should not taste like a more expensive bourbon. That defeats the purpose of drinking rye. Russell's Reserve 6yr rye was such a miss for me. Yes it's a Wild Turkey product, but i guess is directed at ppl who like their ryes smooth. Also Old Overholt is also a great example of what a rye should be like. But each to his own! Enjoy drinking guyz & girls.

WT 101 Rye is my regular. I find it has a nice citrus sort of orange peel flavor to it. Like it neat or with an orange peel.

Crater Lake Spirits out of Bend, Oregon has good rye. Then again, I'm a whiskey noob so I don't have a lot of rye experience. Their vodka is pretty good too. If you ever get out this way check them out.

I'm working on a bottle of Old Forester 100-proof rye. The first three times I tried it, it was very aggressive and I wasn't sure how I felt about it. Then I tried it a week later, and it was fine. I'm not sure what happened. It's a damned good rye for $30.

My "everyday" rye is Old Overholt Bottled-In-Bond (compares favorably to Rittenhouse, IMO), my "step-up" is Pikesville. But my top rye is Col. E.H. Taylor Bottled-In-Bond (almost impossible to find, and expensive, but it is sooo good).

I guess these are some of the most available and decent ryes. Woodford has a rye as well. Am not big on rye, so the Albert Premium Cask Strength is my go to. Am looking to try Lot 40 Dark Oak Rye next. Didn't care for the Basil Hayden Dark Rye.

The only whistle pig I've had has been the farmstock, a few liquor stores in my area sell it and it cost me about 85 bucks for a bottle, personally I'm going to stick with redbreast for that kind of money 👍

Rye whiskeys aren’t as easy to find here in the UK, it’s all single malts and bourbon in the shops. Bulleit Rye was the first I tried purely because it gets such good reviews, is cheap and relatively easy to find online. It was a revelation and I love it. I’ve tried half a dozen other rye’s since and even at twice the price I’ve not found one “better”. Is it the true taste of rye? I don’t know but I like it 👍🥃

I bought a bottle of Bulleit Rye once. I was hugely surprised by how much it tastes like bourbon to me. It was great though. Sweet and nicely balanced.

The list absolutely makes sense, and follows perfectly what I see in sales at the shop. For my money: If I had to pick an MGP Rye I'd go with a Pinhook bottling, Tiz Rye Time being my most familiar. Two others I'd throw into the pot for "quintessential" rye flavors: 1) Pikesville Rye. Does it need introduction? Rittenhouse's higher proof, higher price big brother. Always fantastic. 2) Willett Family Estate 4 year. Whenever someone's getting into rye and wants "the experience" but also wants a slightly more "premium" product, this is the first bottle I grab every time. It does every flavor I want in a rye with a beautiful finish, depth of character, and mouthfeel. Definitely a little more expensive, but worth the spend.

I haven’t tried the 4 year, but have had the 3 year, and have ONLY found it in the 50mL bottles for $10 so it isn’t a frequent occurrence. Glad to hear the great reviews of the 4 as well.

Because intentionally or otherwise, Heaven Hill hit on a brilliant marketing strategy: tell people not to buy your product for a reason that will greatly annoy them, prompting people who maybe weren't planning to buy your product to do so out of spite.

I'd like you to make a batch of George Washington's un-aged rye whisky to hear all about that flavor. As I understand it, the distillate was sold clear, like moonshine, so it had none of the flavor components from wood, just the rye flavors. Tell us about stuff that doesn't taste like an oak barrel for a change.

I found the highwest double insanely cinnamon spicy. Different category, but for me its harder to drink than a Stagg Jr. Definitely interesting though

If you want MGP, just get Rossville Union Barrel Strength. It's their house brand. Better than Bulliett. I always have a bottle on hand.
